DO NOT READ IF YOU HAVEN'T WATCHED THE WHOLE SERIES!!! YOU'VE BEEN WARNED!!! ;)
Ok, I'm RE-watching the show a second time around and I'm having some trouble with the Nina's-the-mole-not-Jaime switch they pulled.
1) Why in the heck did Nina tell Teri that the dead body was Alan York? Before you say "Maybe she didn't know the whole plan"...well, it was HER keycard that had the address on it that led Jack to the guy who was supposed to dispose of York's body in the first place.
2) Speaking of the keycard...if Nina really WAS the mole, how did she encrypt it when she was off on vacation with Jack?
3) If Jaime wasn't the mole why did she throw away her phone message from Teri when she called with the fake York tied up to the tree? And how did the bad guys know where they were if it wasn't Jaime who told them? (as the audience was supposed to believe)
Don't get me wrong...I still LOVE the show...but this stuff bothers me. Has it been brought up before? Any explainations???
P.S. I have a friend who's watching the show the first time thru - I'm DYING keeping my mouth shut and not revealing stuff to him. I already told him who "The Man" was on Alias so he'll kill me if I ruin another show ;)

They were both moles.
Blame FOX and the writers for any inconsistencies about Nina. They didn't pay for the entire season upfront, so the writers only had the first 6 episodes or so written. The rest had to be written on the fly. Network execs are Idiots. But, you knew that. ;)

No, blame it on the producers. Fox ordered 13 episodes; that was their right. It would have been poor business practice to order a full season of a show that had never aired; I think they were actually pretty generous guaranteeing the 13. The producers knew that the season could go 24 episodes; they could easily have decided before they had shot 13 episodes who was whom. Instead, they played silly little games, making stuff up as they went along. There is no excuse for that, only sloppiness and carelessness. And that's why the show went downhill so fast after ep. 13...bad planning on the part of the show's creators.

Maybe Nina assumed Teri wouldn't do anything other than panic, but then again Nina didn't know she was with Alan from what I remember.
I would assume that Jaime did it while Nina was on vacation. To me Jaime looked a little surprised that Nina was present during the interrogation, but I may just be reading into it looking back at it now.

My biggest problem was with Jack's wife and daughter. Far more intelligent people have won Darwin awards.

No doubt, but none of them are as attractive as "Kim". For more info, please see FHM. ;P

As Uther said, they were both moles. This was explained at some point in the series, probably the final episode. (I watched them all over the course of just a few days, so they're all kind of blurred together.)
As for why Nina told Teri who the body was, my guess is she didn't know that Kevin(?) was pretending to be Alan. She probably didn't even know of Kevin/Alan's existence.

Now that I've re-watched a few more, yep, I forgot that Jaime was a PROVEN mole (she spoke to Gaines). I had thought Nina just framed her.
OK, so they were both moles, that's cool.
I also noticed that Nina had a strange look on her face after hearing Jaime say the name "Gaines". Could the producers have really planned both to be moles all the way from the start?

It was pretty tacked-on in my opinion because they cannot explain all the help she gave to Jack early on.
And killing Teri after 23 hours and 54 minutes was a major buzz kill.

I'm totally glad they killed Teri. If Nina had acted any other way, it would have been out of character. As it was, we now know she's a professional. I just wish she would have escaped at the end, and Season 2 could have been Jack tracking her down.

They confessed that the decision to make Nina a mole came late in the game...they knew there was a second mole, but they hadn't decided who.
Really bad planning, if you ask me...she clearly did unmolely things early on. I have the dvd coming soon, and when I watch the series again, you bet I'll be keeping an eye on Nina!

Yes, it would have been out of character for Nina not to kill Teri, but at the same time, the writers didn't have to put Teri in that position in the first place. Besides, the idea of Teri being allowed to wander around CTU unescorted is absurd. Heck, the idea of CTU employees being able to make unmonitored cell phone calls inside the building is absurd.

That was exactly what I was thinking last night as I watched the final episode. There's no way a civilian spouse would be allowed to walk around unescorted in a classified area.

The producers for the show were on NPR mid-season. They said that they assumed the show would _not_ get picked up for the final 11 eps, that's why they 'wrapped it up' when Jack got Nina and Kim in the watertower. Then they had to scramble to come up with another 11 hours. I said it then and I'll say it now...amnesia? Oy!

I think their overall plan was, ahem, very cunning: Have a conspiracy, sovle it by ep. 13, then have the secret mastermind step in with Plan B. That way, they have 24 hours, but can bail if it's not renewed after 13.
Unfortunately, the execution left something to be desired. It would have cost nothing to plan the whole series instead of having to shoehorn plot elements in in the second half, and it took a few episodes to get the momentum back up.
I suspect this year they will be a little more secure in their planning!

PLOT HOLES on "24"???
Naw, couldn't be.

I could have sworn that with the introduction of "Alan York", he had a picture of his fake daughter on his nightstand....
That would be a bad mistake.

I had seen some info from the writers that they had a *horrendous* time plotting the whole thing out. They had been working it very carefully til they sold the show, and then they got busy with actually *making* the show... they said they had something like the first 9 or 10 eps written... and that's *exactly* where the show started to go downhill. Whole plot threads were just dropped. I thought there was a brilliant "hide-in-plain-sight" of Jack grabbing Nina and putting on the flak jacket. He had the real keycard in his hand, and he dropped it on the floor. I didn't realize it til the next day, first time I saw it. Somehow I asked myself "so where is the real keycard?" I thought it a rather brilliant move.
And suddenly, that vital keycard, which undoubtedly would still be helpful? "oh nevermind about that. It's no big deal." And suddenly all the tightly-scripted twists and turns, which actually went places and were obviously written with things a few episodes ahead in mind, were all loosened up.
I was really disappointed with that mid-season clear-the-playing-field thing. Ira Gaines was a *great* bad guy, he had Jack as a virtual puppet at times. No reason to kill him and Alan York off and bring in the Drazen folk. It was like watching a whole second story suddenly.
One nice literary thing -- the only time Jack and his family were all together again was at high noon. And at midnight was when it was sealed that it would never happen again.
And if I really want to annoy my sweetheart, I just have to do my Victor Drazen Bad Generic Eastern European Accent impression.... we both thought Dennis Hopper's accent was horrid!

He was in the real Alan York's house. He'd already killed the real Alan York, and the daughter was already out with Kim. It actually makes a lot of sense tactically, too, because if he calls from the York house, the CallerID would show the York name and number, or if Jack got suspicious and had it traced. So even if the picture was there (I'm too lazy to go look) it's not a mistake.

Oh yeah, and Dennis Hopper's accent was horrid. I think it was even worse than any accent that Brad Pitt has ever attempted.
