Series 2 backup image needed?
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Hi,
Came home yesterday and my tivo was clicking and stuck on the "Welcome powering up" screen. I believe and the folks over in the help forum think it's a hard disk failure.
So, I've ordered a new drive, got the MFS Tools 2.0 CD, but I guess I need an image to restore to the new drive and haven't seen that listed anywhere here.
I have a 6 month old unmodified Series 2.
thanks,
jim

Which series 2 Jim?
AT&T (40GB) or TiVo (60GB)?
I went through the same thing recently.

You can try and backup/restore or dd your current drive across to the new one, but your chance of success is slim.

It's a Tivo 60GB

See your PM Jim.

Same problem here, I have.. err.. HAD an unmodified ATT 40GB Tivo, there was a power failure when it was going into standby and it now powers on with only the welcome screen. Where can I locate an AT&T Series II image?
Thanks,
justpaul

Same here. I came home one day to find an endless GSOD cycle. I ran diagnostics on the drive, and (as expected), it was hosed. I tried to make a backup anyway, but it didn't work. I would appreciate it if someone could point me to a tivo-brand series 2 image.

You can't backup a drive that's stuck on a green screen (yes, everyone thinks it'll get them unstuck) - MFS Tools needs the filing systems to be in a consistent state to do the backup.

I'm looking for a series II image also. I was able to repair the partition map (using pdisk on my Mac OS X (UNIX) system) and then mount the partitions. The roots on 4 and 7 look ok as does the /var on 9 but it still cycles between "starting up" and reset. Anyone have an image?

AT&T vs TiVo branded Series II boxes...
Can you use the same image across the two boxes? Other boxes are a no-no but are these different?

AT&T and TiVo-branded have different software.

FYI: I just restored a TiVo branded Series II image (v3.0) to my AT&T box (v2.0.3). It boots and runs just fine.

Does that make you a new type of Moron? You'll need to be very careful when 3.2 comes in. If it updates successfully then you're not a Moron.
However, if this problem does apply to Series 2's/AT&TiVoes your TiVo will try and upgrade to 3.2 on every call (annoying TiVo Inc) and your flow of Guide data will stop (because Guide data isn't downloaded in update calls).

>Does that make you a new type of Moron?
LOL! ;-) Nice to know I've evolved since I was the first type (wrote over what should have been source drive with no backup! ;-)
Recovering from #1 Moron statis someone sent me a 2.0.3 AT&T image that worked but didn't have the v3.0 features. Just in case the v3.0 didn't work I would have restored from v2.0.3 again but it looks fine. Time will tell. If I am a new kind of moron I'll post it here to save others my grief. ;-)

I have a series II 60 hour 3.0 backup image. Private message me if ya want it. It isn't a virgin image (all my thumbs, populated now playing list, guided setup with s-video, etc.) it's 430MB. I can upload to (your) ftp, or send by snail mail on CDR for reasonable postage (couple of bucks). Glad to be of assistance.

geowar - have you gotten the 3.2 update yet, did everything work okay?
I'm in a similar situation.
Thanks,
Scott

I don't have a 3.2 update; I did get and install a "TiVo brand" 3.0 image on my AT&T box and everything works fine except that it won't update it's listings via the daily call (that it sez completed successfully). About once a week I have to go thru the setup sequence to get two weeks worth of listings. :(
