Clinton on Letterman---wow!
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I thought it was riveting. I could not believe Clinton would even come on considering the jokes Letterman has done about him for so many years. They both seemed to use 9-11 as an excuse to justify ignoring that history of jokes. Clinton walked out while the band played a saxophone classic written by the same guy who wrote the theme song for Dick Van Dyke--- Earle Hagen. The song is called "Harlem Nocturne". Thankfully, Clinton left the saxophone playing to the professionals. Dave asked him if he plays the sax any more, and incredibly, Clinton caused an audible gasp in the audience by stating that he had set up a music room where he just "blows away". I don't think he meant to be funny, but the audience seemed to cause him to subtly smirk. I am a fan of Letterman, and Dan Quayle and Bob Dole caused me to vote for Clinton twice, so it is difficult for me to be objective. I thought Letterman's questions were more interesting than the typical news reporters'---I wished for a moment that he could somehow be allowed to spice up the 2004 debates---I thought Clinton's answers were surprising in some cases---more thought provoking and interesting than I am accustomed to hearing from him. Dave paid him one inappropriately fawning compliment about still being president, and then made fun of him for never shutting up after Clinton left. Neither the guest nor the host was perfect, but it was one hell of an hour of tv.

Well, most late night TV hosts joke about whoever is in office, and the person in office realizes that it's just a joke. If they can't take a joke, then they probably aren't going to do well.
Anyway, I didn't catch this ep, but I do usually enjoy watching interviews of politicians in non-political settings. Usually they get away from the things that divide us, and just give us a chance to get to know the person. After all, I don't agree with Clinton's politics, but he's probably a great guy to party with :)

Letterman: "Do you think that sharing Ballistic missile technology with the Chinese Gov't has had a positive effect on Global affairs?"
I have a feeling that this isn't just a random interview. I dislike watching politicians on late night. Because it is always scripted.

Wasn't last night's show a re-run? I thought it might be new, but Dave's opening monologue seemed to indicate that they were only 6 months removed from the 9/11 tradgedy, not a full year.
Of course I only watched the monologue, so I may be completely wrong about the show being a repeat. It's not as if I caught it the first go around...

No, it was brand spanking new.

Love Letterman, not Clinton. Where will Clinton show up next? TRL? Springer? Home Shopping Network with Hillary?
Posted by: murgatroyd
Yeah, I don't usually watch Letterman, but I couldn't resist this one. You guys missed a kick-ass show.
I almost wanted to weep. No matter what you may think of Clinton, the fact remains, this is one bright, intelligent, articulate guy. It was hard not to sit there and think, "this guy should be in the White House."
Even Letterman wisecracked at one point: "You sound like the President of the United States."
They ended up talking about the proposals for Bill to have his own talk show. There was a little bit of fawning there as Bill told Dave "I couldn't do what you do." but he said that he feels that ex-Presidents should spend 50% of their time in Public Service, so he wouldn't have time to do a talk show every day.

Good lord no.

Anyone have the means to get the interview online in RealVideo or WindowsMedia? I'd LOVE to watch it, and only heard about it minutes ago!
In fact, if anyone can convert it to RealVideo or WindowsMedia, I'll host it online. Just e-mail me the file: nathan@syphix.com

This is exactly why I have a SP for Letterman. I almost never watch it, but just in case someone says "Did you see Letterman last night? It was great!" I can find out what they're talking about.
And for the record, I despise both Socialist Clintons. But I'll still watch this, if for no other reason than "Know your enemy."

Did he mean the Chain Gang? Remember, Clinton also said that any President that lied to the public should resign, so don't take him at his word. He will tell you whatever you want to hear. It makes him very popular. That goes for most politicians, but Clinton is clearly in a league of his own in that respect.

Ah, so when GWBush said "I quit drinking in 1986", yet is caught on video in 1992, obviously inebriated and IMBIBING, perhaps HE should resign? Guess we're meant to believe that was only ONE of the times he "quit drinking"....
Quicktime video of a drunken GWB, 1992. Watch him slam that drink back at the end.

Get a grasp on reality my friend. That video show nothing that you claim. I have no problem with honest political differences, however when people start making crap up and repeat it as fact it makes me ill. Let me guess, you also believe that man never really landed on the moon and that Elvis is still alive.

You are nothing if not predictable. Slam Back.... Gee I hate to see what you would call doing a shot. BTW, how do you even know what was in that glass? My copy of Quicktime was missing the smellovision plug in... ;-)

Just making the point that EVERY President lies...to the public and in private. It's a crime when it's one you hate, but apparently it's "okay" when it's the President you happen to like.
He was clearly intoxicated...and people who were on hand at the time (8/29/92) had said so. "Only in America"...

Apparently you have a hard time reading English. Did you read my post? I covered that. I was also pointing out Clinton's double-standard. I don't like it if it is a President that I like or dislike, so you must not be talking about me. Unless you're drunk.

Riiiigghhht....! Like that whole "Clinton killed Vince Foster thing...". Come on...compare how the man carries himself in public NOW to that video and he is CLEARLY under the influence (it's not even a HIDDEN CAMERA or anything). "Only in America...Only in America". Of course, if you wish to delude yourself to the contrary, that's your right.
Randy, like I said...all Presidents lie. And when Clinton said that, apparently HE was lying at the time (or as the politicos like to call it, it was just "hyperbole")! :p ;)

Ya know, I like GWB. I've also seen a lot of drunk people in my day, and been that way a time or two myself. There's no doubt about it, the dude was HAMMERED in that video.
If anyone wants to defend him, you'd do better from the stance that there's nothing wrong with having a few drinks every now and then. Hell, I wouldn't WANT a president who didn't cut loose and have some fun every now and then. But trying to say that GWB wasn't at least a little tipsy in that video just makes you look foolish.

Hell you should offer you services as an expert witness, no need to mess with all those silly breathalyser or field sobriety test when you can simply view a ten year old home video and state as fact that a person is intoxicated.
As far as every President being a liar, if you mean like all humans they will tell a white lie now and then and will sometimes have to stretch the truth because of national security then I would agree. However, if you mean that ALL President are dishonest and lie when ever it suits their needs than I would strongly disagree. I have learned in life that when someone has that false impression that "everyone"is a liar it is because they themselves are liars.

Similar to the way many people say every now and then "Well, honestly...." What, the other times they are not being honest? Actually, that turns out to be true quite often. And, the general population is aware of that. Kinda like wagging a finger at the cameras.

Especially when compared to the borderline illiterate in the office now. It wouldn't be so bad if he would quit smirking all the time. It's embarrassing, but proves the old adage that countries get the leader they deserve.
We have become a Yokel Nation: fat, stupid, and ignorant.

who prefers an articulate, educated president regardless of party.

Hey, the Unibomber is smart and articulate. I sure as hell do not want that whacko in the White House.

I prefer one who isn't a coward and takes action to defend this country when it is attacked, as opposed to one who responds to terrorist strikes against us with a "Thank you, may I please have another?" attitude.

I've always thought that if you can't pronounce a weapon correctly, then you shouldn't be allow to deploy them.

Finally saw the Letterman interview. I love Letterman, but interviewing is not his best hat. I loved the episode. I despise Clinton, he "seemed" quite knowledgable. Quite the love-fest.
However, Letterman never threw any tough questions, such as "When foreign nations practically offered Bin Laden to the US after catching him, why did you refuse to take him into custody?" or "How many criminals is too many to give full pardons?"
And I'm sure he "knew" Bin Laden was responsible as soon as he heard about it.
Matt -- feeling quite cynical after the "interview"
Posted by: DanT
As much as I despise Clinton, I do believe that he "knew" it was Bin Laden immediately. I did, and I've never had access to any sort of terrorist intelligence briefings. OBL/UBL is just the only one crazy enough to do it. My thinking was very similar to what Clinton said he thought, except my two thoughts were OBL and Saddam. Then I ruled out Saddam directly, because he knows we'd nuke his ass if he did it directly. But he could have easily financed/assisted OBL indirectly. All that went through my head as soon as my sister said "they crashed two planes into the World Trade Center towers."
And sure, everyone lies, even Presidents. Everyone urinates, too, but if you do it in a court of law, it's illegal!

This is not at all what you want it to be. The logic that you use to believe that this show Bush drinking alcohol and clearly inebriated is ridiculous. This is the same kind of crap as all the Arab media discussing the "massacre" in Jenin.
1. Publish a picture of something
2. Say it is something that it is not
3. Find a group of people dumb enough to believe it

That's all I'm saying...no matter how much anyone says otherwise, Clinton DID inhale...and GWB DID imbibe after 1986 (for that matter, he may still well do so as far as we know). Anyone who says otherwise after having seen the evidence presented is clearly deluding themselves.

I found the former president speaking quite knowledgable on many topics (I think most Americans know he is a smart intellectual guy even if it wasn't put to the best use all of the time).
However, I don't understand why he continues to talk about the efforts his presidency made to get these terrorists after earlier incidents (and lots of stopped possible terrorist acts). He also did this a lot right after 9/11/01. I don't see how relevant it is (considering the number of innocent lives taken) except to perhaps improve his historical legacy. I applauded his actions to focus so intently on the Middle East near the end of his term, but it doesn't matter to me that the last proposal will be 'within 3%' of what actually happens because it hasn't happen yet (I do also wish Bush would have taken this on much earlier in his presidency than to let it sit for the months that it did).
But the best side note is that you might be interested in the hotel that the President stayed at in UAE during his mentioned visits there (as confirmed by the Travel Channel documentary on the place). Burj Al Arab - sometimes called a 7-star hotel.
As an FYI, the UAE is a very popular place for Western European tourists. Bikinis, pork, gambling (the largest golf and horse racing purses in the world) and alcohol are in plentiful supply. I consider it a bizarre union, but I guess it works for them.
