What's behind door #1?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

What do ya'll think they will find when they open the door in the shaft in the Great Pyramid? Anything cool and 5th Elementish? :) I remember seeing something on the earlier German exploration, but don't recall them actually finding a door with brass handles in there. Wild stuff!

Phew! I thought we were going to do the Monty Hall problem again

Black Hole?

Posted by: Anubis

I don't know, but I'm positively on the edge of my seat to find out. ;)

It'll be on Fox at 8:00 pm on Monday.

It is interesting to see that Hawass has decided to go ahead and find out.

Originally he seemed interested in what was behind it, but then later changed to the opinion that there was nothing to see.

I have always been curious myself. Since it has some form of handle on it, it has to have some purpose.

Guess we will see.

Maybe we should bump that thread! ;-)

Millions of socks lost by washers of clothes through the centuries. They will form a small multicolored mummy that will kill the scientists, install lambchop as its queen and begin a rule of 1000 years.

LOL! I have never actually laughed out loud at anything I saw on the internet, but I really did this time.

Well, the special will be airing in lots of countries around the same time. As a world, we'll all be disappointed or surprised.

Crap! That's where I was going!

Okay then...a jar with a Goa'uld symbiote! <sigh...not nearly as good> :(

I think I just picked it up off the National Geographic Channel at 7PM MST. Did it from a keyword wishlist for pyramid. Didn't notice if it was on Fox too, so just FYI.

Oops, it was off Fox. It was titled "National Geographic Special" or something.

The "misplaced" millions of dollars from Enron & Worldcom?

Posted by: TivoDaddy

They'll find...........NOTHING. The robot will inexplicably lose power just as the doors are about to open. This will create a furor among skeptics and conspiracy theorists that will say that the CIA is behind a worldwide plot to use humans as food for the incoming alien invasion.

Or was that an X-file episode??

Posted by: Darin

They compare the size of the robot to a child's toy brain, and in other text in the article, a loaf of bread.

Where are they buying their bread? And their toy brains? Or is that just a very small man, throwing off the perspective?

I think that also may be to blame for the word "footlong" :)

Posted by: TheSimpsons

OK, I just caught the last ten or so minutes of the show. From what I saw it seems as if the answer to the question would be “We’ll have to wait and see…”

Hopefully, I missed something...

-The Simpsons :) :D   :p

I want those two hours of my life back.

After two hours of speculation on what was behind the door, they inserted the camera and found a chamber with...... another door.

Stay tuned for the next two-hour special....

Posted by: knownzero

Why wouldn't that idiot commentator shut the heck up?!? He totally ruined the whole show with his incessant interuptions and yapping! I'll leave out the details of what they did/didn't find in case you taped it. Only Fox could sensationalize something as good as a NGS show and completely ruin it with that mumbling idiot and pace of the show... GRRRR...

Posted by: Knative

Once I saw it was two hours ong I decided to pass. Even with TiVo that'd be too much to ff through.

Don't we have something like ground penetrating radar we can use to get a peek inside?

I found it funny how that guy tried to pass it off as some sort of big discovery.

-The Simpsons :) :D   :p

Yeah, read that one...

Well, seeing how it sat there for 4500 years, just try to put it in perspective, and 2 hours won't seem so bad. :)

You've got to hand it to those Egyptians - they were always thinking ahead.

In this case, waaaaaaaay ahead.

Posted by: John McKee

Well, it did accomplish one thing, it made Egyptian history interesting to people that would have otherwise not been interested in all.

Posted by: disco

Perhaps we need to not ask WHAT's behind the door, but "Who's Behind The Door?" ( <-- name that band!)

Posted by: Hunter Green

Zebra.

My vote is for the hideous, tentacled maw of a Thing Man Was Not Meant To Know. In days past, such monstrosities could only devour a few overrich Brits and drive a few dozen locals insane with the mind-rending, non-Euclidean, otherworldly terror of their horrific visages.

But thanks to modern technology, the next encounter with things from beyond will be able to drive millions of dedicated television watchers into the depths of perverse insanity simultaneously. Maybe it wasn't the stars that needed to be right, but the satellites...

Posted by: dmdeane

And behind the second door is....

....the world's smallest catamaran!

Posted by: DanT

My guess is the second door is in front of a third door. Remember how they talked about the three huge stones that were intentionally blocking the path to the chamber?

Posted by: Mark Lopez

From CNN

quote:
The tiny camera showed a small, uncluttered space backed by a vertical, sheer stone surface Hawass believes is another door. Hawass said the next job for researchers was to study the footage and plan for further inspections, which could take up to 12 months.

12 months!? Just hook a chain to that first block and yank it out. It's all downhill and the pieces will come out faster than that first rover did. :)

Posted by: Hunter Green

...possibly followed by most of the rest of the pyramid...

Posted by: Kablemodem

I saw the orignal NGC show when they found that little stone blocking the shaft. That was in 1992, according to something or other I heard somewhere yesterday. So it took them 10 years to get to where they did yesterday. The big mystery, at least according to the documentaries, is what the shafts were for. My first thought was that they were for ventilation for the workers who put the finishing touches on the chambers and filled them with stuff for the afterlife. Then they were sealed with the blocks after the dead guy was entombed to prevent the weather from getting in.

Opening the other tomb was pretty cool. You don't find a perfectly preserved 4,500 year old skeleton every day. The male host was pretty annoying. Every time the Egyptian guy would try to explain the significance of what they had found the host kept interrupting with stupid comments trying to make the discovery seem even more amazing than it was. I got the impression that the host thought he had just participated in a death defying experience. The female host was pretty cute, and much less annoying.

Well, door #2 of course! ;)
