Buffy seasons 4 and 5 questions (untagged spoilers)

Well, first let me say that season 4 wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be. Beer Bad was absolutely the worst episode I have ever seen. Wild at Heart and Where the Wild Things are weren't grand, but the rest of the season was pretty solid. Hush was fabulous. I didn't think I was going to like it at first but once it got going it was awesome. Truly the creepiest episode I have seen yet. I laughed till I cried when Giles was explaining The Gentlemen to them and the hand gestures got a little mixed up.
1. What was up with the apparent Buffy/Angel crossover in season 4? I take it Faith ran to Angel and he took her in (severely pissing-off Buffy).
2. In Buffy vs. Dracula, Spoiler Alert! (highlight to read)
did Buffy really kill Dracula?
3. Buffy has a sister? Am I the only one going WTF?! I would have sworn it was mentioned earlier that she was an only child and I KNOW Dawn was never mentioned before (well, aside from Faith and Tara in dream sequences). Yet everyone seems to have known her all along. This doesn't make sense because Dawn did not move to Sunnydale with Buffy and Joyce. How do the Scoobies know her so well and Giles doesn't?

It's a very lathe of heaven feeling, isn't it? What has Joss been dreaming? ;)
Wait and watch. You'll see. :D

1. The same thing happened in Angel...he took off to meet Buffy off-camera.
2. No.
3. Keep watching.

Gotta chime in here too as I am just now getting myself acquainted with the show's past.
I watched it most of the first season and loved it, cable shake up back home in Texas and we lost WB. Didn't come back into the fold until the end of season 5 and then rode it all the way through this past year.
I must admit I enjoyed season 6, eagerly awaited each episode, and was surprised by the near contempt many fans seemed to have for it. But as I TiVo my way through Buffistory I think I am beginning to "get it".
It's funny, I have had almost the entire series as AVIs for nearly a year but never watch any of them. Oddly enough, I spend so much time downloading and burning TV shows, it doesn't leave any time for viewing! And now that I have added "keeping up with TiVo" to my schedule, it is even less likely that any of them will get watched in that manner! Ah well.
:D

Wait a minute...
Spoiler Alert! (highlight to read)
Lathe of Heaven? I TiVo'd that. Hmmm. Dawn is only previously mentioned in dream sequences. No, that doesn't make sense, I know the actress is in season 7 so it can't be a dream. Buffy has had powerful dreams before, but I doubt she could manifest a human being. Argh! I am only on ep. 2 of season 5, will it be explained before the end of season 5?

Just keep watching... It will all start to make sense in a few episodes.
And stop asking questions - it'll ruin the surprise ;)

Thank god Dawn is getting less annoying! I wanted them to kill her off there for most of last season.

If you're referring to Angel's appearance in The Yoko Factor in season 4, then yes, there was a crossover about Faith and you've got the essence of it right. Spoilers below for Angel season 1.
After the body-swap with Buffy, Faith ran to LA, and tried to kill Angel. She ended up having a breakdown while fighting Angel, and begging him to kill her. Angel took her in to help her. Buffy then showed up in LA to help protect Angel against Faith, and was upset to find Faith staying with him. Buffy and Angel had a big argument. After much fighting to rescue Faith from the Council of Watchers, Faith turned herself in to the police, and was last seen serving a prison sentence at the beginning of Angel season 2.

Yes, Beer Bad was a very scary episode, and not in a good way. About the only worse episode that I can think of was "Bad Eggs" (season 2, episode 12) - blech, was that a bad episode.
Does anyone know at what point they can start selling Angel into syndication? I really want to see the other half of the crossover episodes between Buffy and Angel...

Shouldn't Angel be invincible due to a certain ring given to him by Buffy? I guess that would make for a pretty boring show. :) ;)

Needless to say, the transfer of the ring didn't exactly go off without a hitch. Spike followed it to LA, and more wackiness ensued.
If you really want to know...
Spoiler Alert! (highlight to read)
In the end, Angel got his hands on it, got a little sun, watched a sunrise (or was it a sunset), and then decided to destroy the ring because he felt he didn't deserve it.
What a schmuck...

Yeah...but of course a hero that's truly invincible isn't as dramatically exciting as one who CAN be vinced! ;)
(BTW...kdmorse's spoiler comes from the 3rd episode of Angel called "In the Dark". Interestingly, an episode from much later in the season is titled "The Ring" and has NOTHING to do with jewelry. ;) )

I find that asking any questions about Buffy and/or Angel, when not caught up to the state where everyone else is in the show is usually a bad idea.... There's just too much, that happens, and a lot of meaning in little things that seem innocuous.
Just keep on watching, all should be explained :)

As it happens, the coming of Dawn is foreshadowed in the previous season.
I did not notice it when I first watched it, but in rewatching season four, I noticed that there is a dream sequence where Buffy and Faith are talking, and making a bed in Buffy's house. Faith mentions something about making the room ready "for sister". Then Faith starts bleeding and notices her knife sticking in her where Buffy stabbed her. The dream sequence ends, and I believe this is the episode where Faith wakes out of her coma (if memory serves; I was not watching the whole episode but rather skimming through it).
So, even in such "out of nowhere" suprises like Dawn, Joss has not simply pulled a deus ex machina, but has actually foreshadowed and planned ahead in the writing of BTVS.

That's one of the things I love about Buffy. Sometimes you can go back and see things foreshadowed two or three seasons before. Joss definitely has certain things all planned out WAY in advance.

Had exactly the same reaction to Dawn's appearance -- what is this, some cheesy soap where they can introduce new characters whenever -- but you have to have faith in Joss.
I think Doublement Palace (S6) is still my worst episode ever.

That one was bad but, come one, worse than "Ted"?
Posted by: Pan Chun
Sorry..."Beer Bad" was worse than both of 'em.
Posted by: kdmorse
Oh come on, Beer Bad and Ted weren't that bad.
But Doublemeat Palace, that one did hurt....
