Warranty for a Quantum from an HDR112

Hey, all. I think this is the best place for this question.

I recently picked up an HDR112 off of eBay (RealCrazyMo). The drive is a Quantum Fireball CX, and it whines like a toddler. It booted okay, but when I tried doing a clear-and-delete-everything on the unit, it was taking over two hours, so I stopped it. I know that may very well have been a reasonable time, but I got impatient and had a 30GB drive all ready to go. I'd like to run diagnostics on the drive and, if it's dead-ish, maybe get a warranty replacement for it.

Questions...

First, does Maxtor's diagnostic program work on Quantum drives?

Second, I saw a spec sheet around here somewhere that said that the warranty was 3 years, but Maxtor's site is saying it's one year. When I enter the serial number on Maxtor's site, it says it's out of warranty. What are my chances of arguing successfully for a replacement?

Third, as an aside, anybody seen any good deals for 100GB or 120GB drives recently? I'd pay up to about $1.10 per GB.

I would say very slim. An OEM drive like that is supposed to be covered by TiVo, not Maxtor.

If it's got the Quantum label on it, doesn't that make it a branded drive rather than an OEM drive? Anyway, if Maxtor says the warranty has expired, what makes you think you can change their minds?

You should find PowerMax works on Quantum drives.

Based on the serial number, Maxtor knows (at least should know) whether the drive was originally sold to OEM like TiVo or to the retail distribution channels. Having Quantum label on it does not mean it's covered by Maxtor/Quantum retail warranty.

I've got an OEM Maxtor 80GB drive in to Maxtor now. Their RMA status page on the weekend said my replacement drive should be shipped within the next 2 business days. This drive was purchased at Newegg.com but it is an OEM drive. FWIW...

I personally would not call a drive sold through Newegg an OEM drive. That is a bare "retail" drive with full manufacturer warranty.

Maybe you wouldn't but Newegg does. Places like Gateway, Dell etc. occasionally dump inventory and retailers like Newegg snatch it up and sell it cheap.

Actually, do remember that before Maxtor acquired Quantum, Quantum's policies for OEM drives were to return them to the OEM you got them from (who either exchanges them in bulk, or takes one of the extras that came with the order to handle the returns).

Maxtor's policies has been to treat each drive as the same, whether it was originally sent to an OEM or for retail.

When Maxtor acquired Quantum, those policies have remained in force - thus you can easily get an OEM Maxtor replaced, but Quantums require returning to the OEM.

After Maxtor started making drives under the Quantum nume ("Quaxtors" as we call 'em), the return policies on those were harmonized. However, pre-acquisition drives (and for a little while during the acquisition), fall under the old policy...

When I bought my HDR 212 the drive went bad in it and I called Maxtor and told them and they said that it was a drive that they didnt sell to consumers. So I told him that I had purchased the drive on ebay, and then He got my replacement drive out to me without a problem. But if its past the three year warranty period than I bet there isnt much that you can do.

Thanks for the replies, all.

I ran Maxtor's diagnostics on it, and it came back with some errors, but it corrected them and the drive seems to work just fine. It still whines pretty loud, though, so I'm only hanging on to it in case I need a spare FAT32 drive for something.

The drive happens to be labeled with Quantum's information, by the way, so I don't think it would be considered an OEM drive.

Maxtor replaced some ex-HDR112 Quantums I had with no problem - I just entered their serial numbers onto their website and got an online RMA.

Yes, but when I did that (see above), I was told that they're "out of warranty".
