Help with dead modem!

OK, any help on this would be great..
I have a Sony SVR-2000 with a dead modem, the unit is in its original setting where it wants to dial in to get the time etc... is there ANY way to bypass this and set the time manually? or if not my friend also has a tivo, could I just make a copy of his drive onto mine or is the time stored somewhere else? would it still want to dial in?
I guess if there is no other way, I will have to buy a new modem (looks like a pain) or do the dsl thing..
There wouldnt happen to be a code to tell it to bypass the dial in and set the time manually would there? :)

The time is stored on the hard drive? How would that work?
If you can get a shell (probably bash on serial would be easiest) you can use date to set the clock. You could also try an external modem.

How would I check to see if my unit is running the correct version to be able to use the external modem? Sorry I'm very new to this and just trying to find a way to get this thing working without spending tons of $$..

System Information and the screen where you force a daily call both give the software number. You're looking for version 3.0.something.
If you haven't got 3.0 on your disk you should be able to put your hard drive in your friend's TiVo to let it upgrade.

I still don't see the version info, i checked every screen that the setup will show.. guess ill try the modem kit from 9thtee

Also, I was checking the tests on the 9thtee site and in Test1 it asks if you are reading 1000 ohms, I'm reading about 75 ohms, does it mean i should be reading 1000 ohms or somethings wrong or that if its under 1000 ohms its ok? im confused on this point..
