Robbery Homicide Division - Thoughts?

I saw thie premier this morning. Part of the problem is that CBS has a bunch of shows that seem the same, that I thought I already had a SP.

With CSI, CSI:M, Without a Trace, Hack and this, I lost track of what's what.

Anyway, I wasn't impressed. Tom Sizemore's character isn't very likeable, and the cast doesn't stand out. CSI and Law and Order can get away with having plot focused episodes with little time spent on character development because they've got good casts that manage to stand out.

In the episode I saw, there was a lot of disjointed scenes that didn't mesh together. And I couldn't figure out who was in the cast and who wasn't.

But mostly, I didn't like Tom Sizemore's character.

We didn't like it either. Didn't even finish watching it. First Season Pass casualty of the season.

The first thing that turned us off is the excessive violence. I don't have anything against violence on TV per se, but that much killing EVERY week is just too much, IMHO. Secondly, the audio sounded muffled, and it was difficult to tell what was going on (and CBS-HD doesn't have closed captioning). Finally, we didn't like any of the characters, either.

All I could think of was how gorgeous that show would be in HD. However, the sound was bad, the plot was thin, and what was up with 10 minutes of music and no voices in the beginning?

I'll give it another shot, but it's hardly my fav.

I would be willing to give the show a chance, if it weren't so badly butchered by the cropping. It was obviously not only shot, but framed, 16:9, and it is very disconcerting to see visual elements bobbing in and out of the picture.

Why can't CBS follow the lead of NBC, who broadcast two of the top four dramas from last year in letterbox? People WILL watch!

Well then they better go get a HDTV set. Almost the entire CBS primetime schedule is in HDTV on 1080i....

But they don't HAVE to broadcast the regular signal 4:3. And if they do, then they should only buy 4:3 programming. Buying a 16:9 show and chopping it up is not only obscene, but stupid, because it looks terrible and at least some people aren't going to watch it as a result (I can name 1 :D).

As I mentioned in a roundabout way above, I DID watch the HD broadcast (though downconverted to NTSC and Tivo'd), and it didn't help the show enough for me to watch it again. Yes, I DO notice a big difference on other CBS shows (the only HD network I receive).

HD broadcast quality alone can't save a show that's not worth watching, IMHO.

It's not the broadcast quality that pisses me off. It's the butchering of the show from 16:9 to 4:3. The missing part of the image is distracting enough that I can't even tell if I like the show on its own merits...I'm too busy looking st the edges of the screen and trying to figure out what I'm missing.

My main problem with this show was that the characters were generic. None of them seemed to have any personalities. No relationships, no anomosities, etc. The show didn't show their personal lives at all. Without the human element it was terribly boring.
