i love the screen savers on techtv i can not go 1 day of missing the show
Posted by: TivoChuckster
I enjoy the show as well, and with Tivo, I can watch the pieces I want to and skip over the "dryer" spots...
Posted by: keefer37
I've been big on this show since a friend referred me to it. That being said, I haven't watched it in a month.. too much other stuff on TiVo I'd rather check out. New episodes are always being recorded, but I haven't seen it since they changed new sets or anything.
Posted by: Alan Flanary
I too enjoy the show, but I am getting a little tired of Patrick. His exaggerated mannerisms in an attempt to be funny are getting on my nerves.... ie. "And NOW we'll show you the new Kodak..."
Saw an episode last night where Martin was filling in as co-host for Leo, and Patrick and Martin are looking over the weekend PC ads on that new board thingy they have. As Patrick is talking, Martin is using the blue marker to circle items on the board.... then Martin starts drawing horns and stuff over the circle. Patrick says, "That was just as annoying yesterday when Leo did it." Martin replies, "Well, Patrick I like working with you too." Then Patrick says, "You'll never know Martin." It was a pretty nasty exchange. I've seen Patrick get annoyed with Leo also, but never lash out like this. Time for him to go I think.
Posted by: keefer37
Patrick can get a bit cynical.. that's not the right word, but I know what you're saying..
I'd honestly rather see Martin go though. He's annoying. So I can kinda sympathize with Patrick going off with that guy.
Posted by: SammyTerry
You know what? I don't care for Patrick either, but you know what? I do like Martin, and you know what? I like Meagan also, but you know what? Get rid of Patrick, let Leo be the sole host and Martin and Meagan both be sub-hosts.
(You know what? I hope somebody gets this joke)
Posted by: keefer37
I'm not getting the joke.. if it has to do with the show, mabe it's from not seeing it in awhile.
But yeah, I like your idea. Have Leo the host and have a couple of sub-hosts.

I have always found Leo to be one of the most appealing presenters on TV, a very likeable person though I heard he is a bit of a hard ass to work with.

I miss Kate also, what was the story with her leaving ScreenSavers and then leaving Extended Play - was she "difficult" ????
Posted by: Hoffer
I haven't seen TSS in a couple months. The show got a little repetitive. It seems like every 20th call is the same question. All I really care about is new product stuff. So, I just watch 30 minutes of Fresh Gear a week, and I'm set.
I agree that Patrick is annoying. I do find Martin funny though. He doesn't seem very knowledgeable as far as tech goes.
Posted by: genearch
I like Martin.. he's good comic relief. How are he & Leo? Patrick can be a bit off at times, if anyone goes I'd hope it's him. Morgan looks better with her hair one color :D.. Isn't Megan pregnant? Maybe they'll being Cat from Call for help over?
Maybe it's just me, but who hires all the busty girls there?

You noticed that, too? :D My wife likes to have a running commentary on the daily bustlines. Morgan had a problem probably around 2 months ago where she had some serious nipple control issues. :o Do they have the A/C cranked down to 60 in the studio? Suddenly she was being covered in multiple layers and really heavy material. Then she seemed to have got things under control and they have her in real clothes again. They must have sent her off to TV show actress nipple management night school.

I don't watch it anymore now that it's not Kate and Leo. It's not the same show.
I have always wondered why she left or was reassigned.
Posted by: mdupont_2000
I read an interview with her where she said that they presented the opportunity to go co-host Gamepro TV (I think that was the name at the time) and being an avid gamer she jumped at the chance. Gamepro TV was renamed Extended Play. All I know about her leaving EP is that she was moving to NY.

Also curious about Kate, this is what I've found:

Looks like she got married and left for NY in hope of creating an acting career.

I hope she does ok especially since she's getting out of the high profile stuff. I'm just concerned about the "if I can make it there I can make it anywhere" attitude and not having anything lined up. At least in winter in San Francisco you can sleep outdoors when you aren't making any money. That gets a tad cold in NYC.

She was difficult to watch but that was it. Kate was embarrassing for ZDTV (TechTV) because she knew little about computers, was sometimes awkward and just not a good host. She was basically benched to GameSpotTV until her contract ran out.
BTW, Leo is class. Martin is quite good and isn't going anywhere unless it's his choice. Patrick is knowledgeable but not the greatest on-air personality. As for Chris, he must have some seedy pictures of Paul Allen.

It's time for Cat to return from exile. Better to be a bit player on a show that is watched than to be co-host of a show avoided by all because the other co-host is arguably the most annoying person on TV. For TechTV, the easiest way to quickly increase ratings would be to fire Chris Parillo!
I noticed the "testiness" between Pat and Martin on Monday. The cure for that? Dump the lame Sunday tech ads bit! Oooh, PS2 and XBOX are $199, shocking news  :o . It's never worked out to be the scathing editorial on sleazy tech ads that they hoped it would be, it's just plain boring. Giving it a big screen TelePrompter isn't going to improve it one bit.
Posted by: BLeonard
I used to think Martin was annoying but he seems to have toned down.
After seeing the episode where Steve Wozinak and some famous hacker cohosted the show, I have even greater respect for the regular hosts. They showed that not anybody can do a show. As much as I love and respect Woz, those two did an awful job of hosting. It was embarrassing.
Posted by: harvscar
I honestly can't stand Leo, I must be in the minority though. The worst for me is when they had a designer from Earth and Beyond on explaining the game to annoying as hell/ritalin-needing extended play guy and Leo kept popping his head in front of the camera much to everyone's amusement, distracting from the presenter. I felt really embarassed for them <shrug>
I also caught the Mitnick/Wozniak hosting gig and I can't think of anything worse I've seen recently. I hope they never do that again. The straight man to Marty they have go on the house calls seem to be pretty good, but I guess he's always manning the phones.
More Morgan!!!

That was painful to watch. The worst part was you could tell they knew they sucked and had that "deer in the headlights" look the whole show. Remember Morgan even made a crack about how bad she was the first time on air.. I think she was trying to be nice, but it came out wrong.

I don't hate him. I think he and Leo do a good job.
I'm not a Martin fan at all. He gets on my nerves. He's kind of like the guy everyone has in their office that hangs around you and makes jokes that nobody laughs at and then chuckles awkwardly at his own joke hoping someone will find it funny.
As for the Woz/Mitnick fiasco. I hope whomever thought that one up was shot and put in the dumpster. I kept telling myself that it couldn't get any worse and they just needed a little time to breathe and get in a groove. The groove never came. They were as appropriate for television as Gary Coleman would be for the NBA.
Posted by: Worf
I dunno, I thought the Mitnick/Woz was a great change from the traditional... although, I will admit Mitnick's voice did get irritating PDQ.
Of course, the biggest beef I have with TSS is well... the show is about 50% ads - it's not too bad in the beginning, but it quickly ends up being 1 minute show to 5 minute ads! Alas, the digicable box isn't hooked to TiVo, so I can't watch it skipping the ads. (my TiVo, parent's digicable box :) ).
Posted by: thedude
IMHO Patrick and Leo are what make Screen Savers. They are brilliant together. Patrick doesn't have a good television persionality? Are you kidding me?!? Maybe some folks appreciate Morgan's "windows tips" (okay I like her, but it aint cuz she is tech savvy :D), but without Patrick they would lose the bulk of the meat of the show.
Posted by: mrboo
I think Patrick just suffers from being too intelligent. He's sarcastic but way too dry. Many of the super intellegent computer geeks I work with suffer from the same disorder. A lot of their humor is derived from very recent pop culture references, overstatement, sarcarasm, and a little irony tossed in. It's grating, but usually harmless. The funny part of it is that so many geeks that I've met have the exact same sense of humor but with no indivuality to their humor.
Posted by: keefer37
mrboo, I think you've really hit the nail on the head. I think with Patrick there's a bit of arogance in the mix too.. not a huge amount, but a bit. Given the choice between Leo and Pat, I'd pick Leo, but I don't really want TSS to can anyone in the cast currently.
Posted by: thedude
Maybe I'm just one of those geeks with no individuality ;), but I like his sense of humor. I think Leo is great too, and usually they work really well together, though Leo has a tendency to interrupt Patrick quite a bit. At any rate, whether you like his sense of humor or not I think he adds a lot to the show and without him the show would lose its appeal to some of the geeks :)
Posted by: dmdeane
Wow, tough crowd.
I think Patrick's a good host for the show; he's very knowledgeable, and his sometimes barely contained agressiveness and sarcasm seems to mesh quite well with Leo's teddy bear onscreen personality. They are two opposites that seem to work well together. Not so with Patrick and Martin, however; I think Martin's personality grates on Patrick exceedingly.
I find Patrick's tight-lipped edginess appealing, for some reason; I guess I just find the sledgehammer swinging, kilt wearing, techie aggro types appealing. And rather rare on broadcast TV, where sachrine sweetness and blandness are practically de rigeur.
Go Pat go!

Did she finally get rid of the zebra die job do? Today's show was a rerun, so I cant see for myself right now.
Posted by: avaloncourt
She's red now. It looks a lot better than the "zebra" look though. I'm wondering why the outfit change in mid-show though. She started out in the pink tank top and then about an hour later I noticed she was wearing all black.

Kind of a browny red I would say, plus the center parting has been eased back.

The dumb thing about TechTV is that maybe on the screensavers they have some mac stuff, pc stuff, cell phone stuff, electronics stuff, etc....
But wouldn't it be smart to have an hour MAC show a week, instead of showing screen savers 35 times a week. Currently with Call For Help and Screen Savers they have about 12 1/2 hours of computer related shows a week, and 1/2 hour of Fresh Gear a week. That seems pretty dumb.
They could do so much with that channel. What about a 1 hour XBOX show a week paid for by Microsoft? Same with PS2, Gamecube...
What about a specific show for car electronics, wireless gear, there are so many possibilities.
There are so many things they can do, but i don't know if they're being cheap in wanting to produce barely any new shows a week, or what, but it seems a royal waste.

A friend and I have emailed TechTV about doing a Mac-specific show. We've never received any responses. :(

My guess is that they simply don't have the staff for it. You see pretty much everybody on all the shows at one time or another; it looks like they're spread pretty thin these days.
That, and the staggering expense of producing a new show.
Posted by: smak
I know, but getting more interesting shows would get them more viewers which would allow them to get more staff. How hard could it be to get Bret Larson to host an hour Mac show a week. You'd probably get more viewers from the 5-10% that own MAC's than the 90-95% PC owners who watch the other shows.
Or why don't they just take the screen savers once a week, cut it to an hour, use the same set and have somebody host a mac show that then can repeat as 1/2 hour shows other times during the week.
I would actually apply that logic to 5 different shows. Cut SS to 1 hour, and than after do 1/2 hour shows on 5 different tech subjects, mac, wireless computing, maybe a home theater show, etc...
Then they can fill the schedule with repeats of those individual shows and at least have some different shows.
I don't even own a mac, so i'm just thinking out loud here. I think it would make some sense.

I was laughing so hard today. I was catching up on yesterdays Screen Savers and they were doing the segment on the Pringles Can/Coffee Can 802.11b external directional antenna and Patrick had a bit of a slip of the tongue.
He was attempting to say, "The problem with the Pringles can is that they're kind of a mess to build," but it came out as "The problem with the Pringles can is that they're kind of a mess to bitch." Leo got a big smile and said, "It's a mess to what?" Patrick replied, "Nothing."
I wonder if there had been some behind the scenes grumbling on the set and his mind automatically went there.
Posted by: keefer37
Man, gotta make sure to check that out.
Posted by: avaloncourt
It is 38 minutes into the show. Here's a clip of it. Sorry for the quality. I'm doing it off the laptop and compressing it to make it a very small file. Sorry I had to put it in a Zip file. The forum software won't accept an mp3 attachment.

i think leo and pat make a good pair.. but i actually find leo more annoying then anyone on the set.. that may be because when i did a netcam call on the show he seemed a bit "blah" about the problem...
anyway if they get rid of any of the hosts i say they get rid of chris pirillo...
i also saw that metnick/wozniack show
had to have been the worst show of thiers id ever seen... what i dont understand is why they decided to make a show with one of the hosts not even being able to access the internet plus metnick who was banned from the internet recommend as his favorite program trillian!
Posted by: Fofer
Patrick's brain probably was thinking "that they're kind of a BITCH to build," or "a mess to bitch with" and then he quickly edited himself, but it came out wrong. Classic case of the brain working faster than the mouth.
Everytime I watch the shows on TechTV, I can't help but shake the feeling that it's a sinking ship. With the cast changes, the poor scheduling data, and constantly repackaged/repurposed content, it just feels like a network in trouble. I love their shows, but I hold them at arm's length before I can't shake this gut feeling that the network will close someday soon. All of the mainstream tech news magazines and publications have shuttered in the last 2 years... Entertainment Weekly's special "tech" insert, LA Times "Cutting Edge" weekly section, Yahoo! Life... they all went away as America soured on the dotcom revolution and the economy went south. I predict TechTV will (sadly) go this way too.
Today's news just adds fuel to this depressing fire:

Are you referring to Leo Laporte? I seriously doubt it. I don't see Leo burning up the media landscape as a celebrity anytime soon. I mean, he's a smart tech show host, a good author and excellent at self promotion... but let's not turn this into some dramatic ego struggle. This is a tech talk show for nerds, not Broadway.

Watched a Screensavers show today (Tivo'd from a couple days ago). They have a live lan-fest going on with Unreal Tournament 2003. Martin walked up behind Morgan as she was playing and asked how the game is going, and she replies, "You have to be careful not to shoot your rockets off prematurely." This was followed by everybody on the set snickering... it seemed to go right over her head. Is she really that oblivious to some of these one liners she fires off?

morgan is the one who keeps dying her hair
megan is the pregnant one.. i know its annoying with the names

I've only just begun to watch the show but right at the beginning Cat was killed by Morgan and Cat was complaining about that. Then Morgan went to a new level and Leo said that "Morgan is on that big throbbing thing."

With Patrick on vacation, I think the show isn't nearly as good. It proves to me that Patrick is needed for the show.
Several weeks ago, they showed how to measure the electic power consumed by devices. It really showed that neither Patrick or Leo know electronics. The show could use someone that knows electronics.
I am glad that the last couple of mondays, Leo has behaved himeslf in the segment that talks about the Sunday Ads. Leo playing with the electronic board was childish.
Megan has been standing in for Patrick this week. I am really tired of her. She seems to think everything is funny. She laughs at everything. Enough about the Mac. Take her off of the Screen Savers, and give her a show about Mac's. Lets see how long that lasts. And enough about her being pregnant. I have heard enough about it.
I am not a gamer, so the thursday shows doesn't last long when I fast forward trough the LAN party segments.

I agree Patrick brings a balance to the show. I like Leo, I like Patrick (not as much as Leo) but Leo needs Patrick to counteract him.
All of the "girls" are fluff. Originally they were all the staffers who became popular with the nerds but now they are taking it too far and it's lost it's appeal.

I know one episode recently was live at its normal time slot (7pm) but because of some "issues" they had with showing the leaked Doom III preview they pulled that show completely and reran the previous days show in the latter rerun slots.
I'm guessing ID Softwares lawyers called up and had a chat with them.

My two cents....Martin is a dunce, and should be fired.
Leo needs to stop hawking his damn book all the time, but otherwise I like him.
Patrick is good. He seems to be into all kinds of technologies and brings a lot to the table, IMHO.
Megan needs to stop with all the baby talk...what is this, Regis and Kelly?
I like Morgan, but she needs to have more airtime to get over the constant
shocked, 'deer in the headlights' look she gets a lot of the time. I like her new hair and her better wardrobe. Her clothers show off her nice figure better.
Last night Megan and Yoshi were the hosts, and Yoshi did a pretty good job. Better than the overly gushy Megan, IMHO. Maybe give Yoshi the cohost job when Patrick or Leo are gone.
But all in all, I really like the show, still watch almost every day.
And the gnome on Call for Help, Chris, is annoying too, but less than Martin.
At least Chris has some knowledge of computers and tech. Martin is just a clown, and not a funny one at that. MHO, YMMV. Peace out!

Well Woz was on again tonight as a cohost and as big an Apple fan as I am he really isn't much of a host. I didn't used to like Martin. I found him annoying, but I view him in a different light after seeing some of the amatuer hosts who have filled in recently. Martin keeps things flowing, looks at the right camera, knows when it is his turn to speak and is also pretty good at doing the celebrity interviews.

Hmm. Haven't watched THE SCREEN SAVERS in a while. It always seemed so "local TV" in terms of production.
I do remember a few things:
You guys keep talking about Morgan - when I last watched she had just replaced some redhead (what was her name? Not Kate.) doing all the web sites of the night. Anyway, she was VERY uncomfortable in front of the camera. She had sort of a "Daryl Hannah in Blade Runner" glazed over look on her face. I can only assume she has gotten better.
Patrick was a complete wanker. From reading this thread, it seems that hasn't changed.

The redhead was the beautiful and talented Jessica. Can't recall last name. She was a fave of mine, but I love redheads, so that is a personal issue (or problem, if you prefer).
But, yes, I think Morgan has improved a bit since her initial shows, but more time on camera will help her even more. She seems to loosen up more each week. As long as she does not turn into another Megan. Just too damn perky....reminds me of Kathie Lee at times....ugh!!!

We were watching TSS today (probably was a rerun, it was the middle of the day), and they showed Michaela looking at some pictures... She then says to Leo "If stop promoting the book, I'll return your pictures..." It was hilarious...
