SNL Season Premie (spoilers)

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

So, what did everyone think of the season premire of Saturday Night Live? I thought it was mostly weak myself. The departure of Will Ferrell is quite evident.

The Hammond as Cheney opener wasn't that good, even though it was reminicient of Dr. Strangelove. There have been stories in the press that they couldn't find anyone to play the president -- they don't want to use Darrel Hammond b/c even though he could do a great W, he does all the other political characters, and would really have no one to play against.

The highlight? The second Springsteen song, "You're Missing." Him, on the piano (with harmonica), by himself without the E street band was just amazing.

I totally disagree. I thought just about everything they did was funny. My favorite part was the Smurfette segment, although that was Robert Smigel's. Red Sox fans giving the Yankees fans "loser counseling" was good, as was the kids from Boston at a Springsteen concert. ("I want Cox all over me!" "Please tell me you got that?")

And who didn't want to see the AFLAC duck shot by hunters? And Versace pockets! $75,000 frozen food! :)

Maybe I have lower standards, but I really liked this week's show.

I liked about half the skits..

The justin Britney skit was funny.
I liked the news.
Versace pockets was good.

The animal show was lame.

Can't recall the rest..

Posted by: Otto

Justin/Britney=lame and btw, who cares about J&B anyway?
News=good
Versace=good
duck/other thing=good
boston kids=good
tv funhouse=freakin' hilarious
bruce springsteen=bad, bruce sucks, has for a long, long time
dr. strangelove=funny, but not that funny
fan counseling=not that funny
brian fellows=awful

Can't remember any of the other bits offhand..

Didn't see it, but heard a bit from Weekend Update this morning on the radio.

To paraphrase:

"The Washington Post is reporting that Chelsea Clinton has recently hired a personal assistant, this despite the fact that she doesn't yet have a job.

She's now being referred to as the white Al Sharpton."

Funny. :D

Everybody gets that wrong.

It's "Brian Fellow". His little show is called "Brian Fellow's Safari Planet".

"I'm Brian Fellow!" :)

I usually like his sketch, but it was "off" this time. The Smurfette/Anna Nicole Parody was the definite high point of the show.

The suppository commercial was just STOOPID.

I deleted my SP for it a couple months ago because it kept recording repeats. I forgot I did this. Yesterday morning I was expecting to watch SNL, but it wasn't there. I've readded my SP, so I won't be missing anymore.

I used to think Brian Fellow was lame too. In fact, I used to skip over anything I saw with Tracy Morgan. (such as Astronaut Jones) But the Brian Fellow skits are starting to grow on me. This one was one of the lamest I've actually watched though.

The animal show was very lame, as always.

The Smurfette was great. That's probably the first "TV Funhouse" segment that I really enjoyed.

The Venezuelan Comic was bizarre.

I liked the part at the Springsteen concert when their buddy comes down the aisle carrying a big tray of beers with a strap around his neck. They asked him, "Hey, wow, so you got a job selling beer, huh?" Answer: "No..." and he wanders off, sipping beers.

To refresh your memory: "That bird's CRAZY. I'm Brian Fellow!"

Posted by: bidger

I FF'ed through Springsteen's ballad. I couldn't believe it! THIS is how you close out your part of the show, Bruce? There really wasn't anything I didn't enjoy other than that.

Well, being a Yankee fan who lives in Boston, the bit about two Red Sox fans helping us Yankee fans cope was "wicked" funny... (for those of you who do not live in Boston "wicked" is used as a noun, verb, and everything else here in Boston. Examples are...It's wicked cold out... That Sully is a wicked pissah (pisser)...Bruce's concert was wicked A.

The concert skit was funny also. Of course they really hit on the Boston accent and their ragging on the Fleetcenter prices was spot on.

The Brittney & Justin bit sucked.

Brian Fellows  - Horrible.

The Matt Damon, Matt Damon, Pat Damon skit was ok...little long in the tooth.

Smerf takeoff was funny.

The Boss...well he was the Boss! Wicked pissah!

Oh well, I got to go pahk the cah at Hahvad yahd now! :D

Really?? I thought that Bruce, by himself on the piano, singing You're Missing, in NYC, was one of the most powerful moments of music on TV in a long time.

Oh...I just remembered...I also sort of liked the "Dr. Phil" parody they did. Wasn't 100%, but it had potential...and the guy is RIPE for ripping on! :)

Posted by: trainman

Dr. Phil? I thought that was a Jeffrey Tambor impression. :D

I can't stand Brian Fellow, but I love the Astronaut Jones sketches. To each his own, I guess.

I'm a big SNL fan, I've liked it since the '80s, even when everyone said they were stinking up the joint (but I didn't), and I really liked this season premiere.

Didn't anyone else notice Will Ferrell was listed as still on the show, even though he's gone this year? His presence is missed, but others will pick up the slack.

Athough I did catch Brian Fellow shout "I'm Brian Fellows" one time (at least) and then rewinded to see the title of the segment and was confused. But it doesn't take much to confuse me.

Matt

I liked Brian Fellow and always do, I like Tracy Morgan. I thought the first half of the show was good but after weekend update it got weaker.

I had terrible audio dropout on my recording. About once per minute the sound failed for1/2 a second. This was on a DirectTivo, did anyone else get that ?

To each his own Tb, I just thought a rocker would be more appropriate to close out his set.

The Sox fans counseling NY was clever, Bruce was Bruuuuuuuce, and the Smurf cartoon, well, if I've ever come close to wetting the bed from laughing too hard, that was it. (Is this more information than you wanted?)

Turtleboy, you're right. "You're Missing" was moving and wonderful. BTW, what happened to Yeled Tzav (did I spell that right?)? And -- like the new sig.

The subject line tells it all. SMG will host SNL tonight.

Posted by: Demandred

I thought most of the stuff on this week's show was weak. As always, the news was the best part. Nothing else really stood out as funny.

Posted by: Pan Chun

Hmm...with the exception of a few skits (and some problems with "timing"), I thought this week was a significant improvement.

And Chris Parnell's GWBush was actually not bad at all, IMO. :)

Only funny part of this week's show was Tracy Morgan telling Lorne, "Go get me a Coke, bee-yotch!"

I think Tracy Morgan is the funniest guy on there right now, in the same way Norm MacDonald was. No matter what they are doing, they are always themselves. They are not actors. They are just funny people.

You put Tracy in a sketch, and he's Tracy, no matter who he's supposed to be. And he's hilarious.

That "breast" one he did had some funny, funny lines. "Don't over think it baby."

From Update- Can anyone remember the joke they told about the "Fur Real Friends." It's a stuffed animal that suppose to be pretty lifelike. I've been trying to recall the joke, but it's slipped my mind.
