Does anyone have Firefly 1.03

Sat down to watch it tonight and found baseball instead. :( Is anyone willing/able to send me a tape?
Thanks,
-Tori

FOX 11 is re-airing it on Sunday.

What time are they re-airing, though? Their website only lists primetime shows. Nothing else throughout the day.
(I haven't checked my TiVo to see if the data is in there, but on this short notice, I doubt it.)
It doesn't really matter for me since I noticed it was baseball at about 8:45 Friday night, and set up several recordings for later that night and in to Saturday, so I managed to catch it. But I would like to see the first 9 minutes of John Doe that they just cut off ("We now join our regularly scheduled programming already in progress.")

Do you know what time? It isn't in the guide data, and it isn't in the schedule grid on fox11.com either.

It was listed in the guide @ 4pm, but it ended up starting 45 minutes early so I only got the last 10 - 15 minutes or so of it. Anyone know if it's going to be shown again?

Same thing happened to me. Not a happy camper.

I might be able to help w/VHS, but speak quickly as I may have to send in my 2nd VCR very soon...

I have Firefly still. How much does it cost to send to VCR tape?
Posted by: DanT
A VHS tape will fit in the small Priority Mail box, and just toss in a couple pages of crumpled newspaper as cushion material. Priority Mail is $3.85 IIRC.

Firefly 1x03 is up on alt.binaries.multimedia.
I can upload it to someone's server if folks still need it. It's a 800MB SVCD, viewable using most DVD programs like WinDVD or DVDPro. A lot of more recent standalone players can view SVCDs as well.

Can I play it directly off the hard drive or would I need to burn it onto a disc for it to work?

You can play it directly from the hard drive.

As DanT mentioned, you can use something like Windows Media Player to play the MPG2 file directly off the drive. I use WMP 6.4 with the VOB filter-patch on my system but I believe WMP8 or WMP9 can play the MPG2 file without any additional patches. WinDVD or PowerDVD can also play the file directly as well but of course, WMP is free so that's usually the best choice for playing the files and not the VCDs.

$1.47, media rate.

Windows Media Player usually cannot play MPEG 2 videos for me, don't know why. But a DVD player program will play it without much difficulty.
BTW, if it's in bin/cue format and you don't want to burn it to CD, look for a program called VCDGear to convert it.
Posted by: DanT
Windows Media Player will only play it if you have a software MPEG-2 codec installed. The way most people get/have one installed is by installing a software DVD player. There are a couple of MPEG-2 codecs available for download as well, and those won't require you to install a full-blown software DVD player.
And if you can't find VCDGear, IsoBuster will also work. JFYI.

I wish networks would realize they are crippling their own shows by pre-empting them for sporting events! There's what!?? 4 ESPN stations. Just put all the sports on there and leave primetime and network slots alone! This is a main reason Futurama did not get the time it deserved. If there were a telezapper for sports, I'd install it in a heartbeat.

I guess I've installed the VOB filters on my machine so long ago, I don't usually think about WMP's MPG2 support. I prefer to burn it to SVCD anyway so I can watch it on my TV. Lots easier sitting on the couch rather than at the computer.
In any event, the offer is still open to whomever has a server available. I can upload 1x02 or 1x03.

logic88 sent you a PM.
Thanks to those willing to mail, but I will give it a try this way first.

DanT: I do have MPEG 2 codecs. I'm not new at this. ;)
WMP just seems to crap on me when trying to load the codec. Hangs for a bit then core dumps, in a manner of speaking. Even when I can get it to play, it doesn't grok the correct aspect ratio.
Save the headache. Use a software DVD Player instead. Works great. WinDVD is pretty good.
Posted by: DanT
Sorry Otto, that wasn't really directed at you. Just a general statement to anyone else wondering why they can't get WMP to play SVCD files.
And I agree, I use WinDVD for most of my viewing as well. But I gotta wonder if all the problems (especially aspect ratio ones) are with newer versions of WMP. I'm still using the old 6.4 on one PC, and 7.1 on another, and haven't seen any AR problems at all. Then again, I don't use it as much, so....

If someone is making VHS copies of this episode, I'd really appreciate one too. After reading this thread I checked my TiVo last night an I also only got the last 15 minutes of the episode (I live in NYC, where it aired on Sunday). Unfortunately, I can't download the episode because I have a slow internet connection and I'm heainrg impaired and need the closed-captioning. Obviously, I'd pay for the tape and shipping and handling.
Thank you,
Ben

The 800 MB file size isn't a problem for me, it's finding a point to access it.
Google doesn't have the alt.binaries in it's groups, and the newsgroup web sites I've found require either a one-time setup fee, or a monthly fee.
Does anyone know of a freely accessible web site that has this Firefly episode? Or a filename that I can search for?

Have you looked to see if your Internet Service Provider has newsserver access? You might try looking on their homepage. For example.. for the service I use, their webpage HERE describes the settings exactly (don't use Outlook Express for downloading binaries though.. something like X-News will make you much happier). I would think your ISP should have a similiar help page on using their NNTP newsservers (if they have them). Most ISP's have newsserver access, but fail to tell their customers... it's more of an after-thought. If you are serious about newsgroup access, it is worth it to pay a 3rd party for prime access (such as www.easynews.com, www.giganews.com, www.newsguy.com, www.dummynews.com, www.spidernews.com, to name a few). In addition to my ISP's newsserver access, I pay for Newsguy to supplement incomplete posts and get access to groups that my ISP doesn't subscribe to on their servers. Newsguy isn't the fastest newsservice on downloads (usually no more than 50kbps download speeds), but you get 500MB/day, a 30MB website and two e-mail address for $9.95/month (when purchased in 3-month increments). Hope this helps..

I don't have an ISP. For the slight amount of Internet I do, I just do it at work.
I'm not serious about newsgroups. I simply want to view this one episode that was pre-empted by the baseball game. Thus, a fee-based newsgroup service isn't worth it to me.

Easynews offers a 3-day/1Gig free trial. Perfect for grabbing that one missed episode.
Posted by: Thom
Thanks, I'd looked at them.
Easynews insists you give them your credit card number and matching zip code, even for the free 3-day trial. I'd rather not risk the nightmare of information theft just to watch a missed episode...

Use the form below to get a FREE 3-day account on EASYNEWS.COM. We will authorize your credit card for $1. We will not charge your card. This will not show up on your credit card bill. We test your card to see if it could be charged $1.
We also need a valid postal/zip code. This should be the zip code that your credit card bill is sent to. This is for both your protection, and ours. We believe this will cut down on fraudulent transactions, as people who steal your credit card information won't necessarily know your billing zip code. We do not record this information permanently. It is only used for this transaction.

PM/email if you need a tape. I'd say $3 should cover tape and media shipping... Should be able to make copies Thurs nite.

I always have a hard time tracking down WHERE to find stuff on the groups. I always end up doing a search for what I want and I get a million posts from people who are looking for the same thing I want.
What am I missing?
Posted by: DanT
For Firefly, I think the group you'd want is alt.binaries.multimedia.firefly (search for groups with "firefly" in the name and you'll find it.) Then once you're there, you'll have to look for some variation of either the title ("Our Mrs. Reynolds") or the episode number (1x03, 1.03, etc.)
Once you've downloaded all the files (about 450M for a VCD, or 800M for an SVCD) then you need to extract the file. Go to www.timdoc.com for detailed instructions.
Posted by: Pan Chun
DanT: That's still a REALLY NEW group, depending on your newsserver, it may not exist. Most of the files are crossposted to alt.binaries.multimedia and/or alt.binaries.multimedia.scifi in case the Firefly group isn't available to you yet. :)

I assumed he was talking about Easynews (since he quoted my line about it) and I heard (haven't verified myself) that Easynews already had it. I didn't mention a.b.m because I hadn't seen it there yet, although I notice it's there today.

I was - thanks for the info. My ISP has a news server but its just too hard for me to find stuff on the generic groups. I am news group lame.

Has anyone seen This weeks (Tuesday October 8, 2002) episode of NYPD Blue posted anywhere? We had severe thunderstorms Tuesday Night and I only got about 20 minutes of it recorded before signal was lost.
