I'm a current a potential buyer of my first Tivo. My question is I don't have a physical phone line. I know from reading on this forum that I can get the USB ethernet dongle to hook up to my cable modem. But one thing is that it needs 3.0 software. Is it possible to get the software updated to 3.0 before registration when I try to force download the software at my friend's apartment?

Just went through this.
First I tried ethernet straight out of the box. No luck due to 2.??? software.
So I connected it to a phone line and forced it to call in. Down came program data in about 10mins. It claimed it was going to take several hours to process it, but less that an hour later it was done. So I called in again and down came 3.0 software in about 45mins. Yet again it claimed it would take a month of Sundays to process it (6-8 hours I believe) but less that 1.5 hours later it was done. From that point on, ethernet worked just fine once the dialing prefix was set.
So if you can manage two phone calls at a friends house you will be OK. Assuming 3.0 is still being sent to series 2 boxes on the second call.
And during all this, it claimed I had an un-activated account and would be cutoff in 6 days.

The 80 hr TiVo comes with 3.2, so you should be able to do USB ethernet out of the box.
