Hi,
I live outside US and UK where there is no Tivo Service. I'm interested to know if Tivo service is a must to buy a Tivo DVR. I mean, is it possible for Tivo DVR to act like a normal DVR from a satellite box like Humax 5400. All I need is a digital video recorder that records programs instead of my VCR.

Tivo service is absolutely required. It doesn't support satellite services other than DirecTV and Dish. It won't record without the service.

Tivo is not really made for your needs. I know of no product that is. Replay is closer, but still not really ideal.

If all you need is basically a digital VCR, I'd get a computer and a video card and a big hard drive and roll your own. Seriously. It'll work better and be cheaper, in the long run.
