Buffy #7x03 "Same Time, Same Place" (Spoilers)

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: Pan Chun

I only just started watching (I'm about 3 mins in at the moment...Willow's arrival "the second time" is happening), so I don't have a clue yet what is going on...

But I wanted to get the thread off to a good start with an obvious and consistent naming pattern. :)

Any and all comments are welcome...I'll be back in about 45 mins! :)

Best lines:

"Stop thinking about vomit"

"She's posable?"

"Have to file a flight plan and everything"

Posted by: TiVoLance

Well I REALLY didn't want to be creeped out by that demon (since the commercials made it look stupid) but I really was. That demon tapped into my fears of when I was 8 years old visualizing Gollum from The Lord of the Rings and added my fear of the water witch Meg Mucklebones from Legend. The episode was pretty good in that it is dealing with consequences of your actions (so many series drop the episode to episode plotlines these days). So Anya is turning back toward the Scooby Gang. They even called on her to watch Dawn while she wasn't able to defend herself. I wonder if Xander and she will get back together. I have one nagging question though (tagged because its speculation from interview with Joss about later in the season):

Spoiler Alert! (highlight to read)

In an interview Joss said Tara would not be coming back this season but Amber (the actress) would. When/where is this going to happen?

Posted by: Maui

I liked the episode as a whole the overlap scenes were done very well, especially the one with Spike.

The scene at the end between Willow and the Demon had me cringing pretty badly and I am not one to usually let that kind of stuff get to me.

She's posable? Great line

Tivolance. Thanks for tagging that a spoiler. I avoided it since it is speculation for later in the season. I hope others follow suit in their replies. I try very heard to avoid those type of spoilers.

I couldn't help but think Gnarl was going to say "my precious" at some point.

[edit] Darn TiVoLance beat me to it.

Posted by: Pan Chun

Actually, while Amber the actress MAY come back (sorry, SPOILERS is in the title of the thread), she's also slated to be on the writing staff this season. :)
Spoiler Alert! (highlight to read)
My suspicion? She'll be one of the forms the shape-shifting big-bad takes.

Best line?

Spike: "I'm insane. (indicating Xander) What's HIS excuse?"

LOL... love it. As for the episode - loved Dawn with the whole paralysis thing - "She's posable!!" - but on the whole, this episode didn't do as much for me as the last few weeks. I want to know what happens with the Spike thing, and I wouldn't mind more eps at the high school. (Yeah, I know, they have more planned soon.)

I feel for Allison Hannigan in this episode - having to sit still while "Gnarl" sits there slurping against her midriff... I'd love to see outtakes from this episode. :) The slurping noises were a little excessive though.

One last note: Who at UPN is WRITING the previews for the next week? Geez... someone fire em... they make Buffy sound like the worst sitcom ever...

My favorite line: Willow to Anya: "You just teleport there quick as a bun.. uhh, quick as a flash." (paraphrased.) I laughed out loud, but my wife didn't catch it.

As for the big bad: in the season premiere, did the big bad only morph into villains that are dead? That could be why Willow and Angel weren't there. (I know, Angel is really dead, since he's a vamp, but you know what I mean.)

Posted by: TiVoLance

No Drusilla isn't dead is she?

ERR EDIT to say that I mean killed off. Of COURSE a vamp is dead :D

You're forgetting that at the end of the season premire that the Big Bad morphed into Drusilla, then the Master, then Buffy.

Of course Buffy's died twice.....

Good episode but not great. Nice to see Willow back though.....

Not a great episode, but lots of great stuff in it, as has been pointed out above. Dawn falling off the sofa when the demon was killed was another fun detail.

So far I'd say we're off to the strongest start of any season; it seems to me the first 2 or 3 episodes in each season are usually pretty weak, but I think all three shows this year have been very good.

I am having a unique perspective here watching the new episodes and still playing catchup with the past and I must say that I really like what Marsters has done with the Spike character. Hmm, maybe I should say I like what he has returned it to. I have been watching season 5 mostly and Spike just seems, well, I don't know but I don't like it. Kind of a real meatball (a patsy more or less). I had figured this was where the character came from and he has brought it to what we know now. Only yesterday I see School Hard and realize no, he has him back to where he started. Ah well, guess it will all come together as I put the "big picture" together over time!

One little semi spoiler type thingy, not sure so I will eclipse it.......

Spoiler Alert! (highlight to read)
I have read in my rapid fire education on the series that the "and" tag for a castmember is almost certainly a death knell. Does this mean that Willow is going to die this year? Just wondering.

Obviously, answering my spoiler tagged question requires either a vague response in the hopes that I will know it was meant for me or another spoiler tag. Daddy, can we just stop with the spoiler tags? :D

Posted by: Bryanmc

To answer your spoiler question, it was like that last year and I think it was always like that for Anthony Head, so I'd say there's no correlation.

Posted by: Dawghows

This may be one of the strangest requests ever on the boards, but what the heck:

For my livelihood, I design woven upholstery fabrics. Several of my coworkers and I are pretty sure the fabric on the sofa cushions on Buffy's sofa last night were designed by our studio.

Does anyone have the capability to easily get a video capture from this episode that can be posted (or emailed to me) so we can get a look at it? A good close-up of the cushions on the back, maybe while Willow was sleeping, would be great.

I know this must seem kind of ridiculous, but we'd be pretty excited if we're correct about it being our fabric.

No opening scene slayer? slayings this week. I was actually looking forward to it, kinda like the death scenes at the beginning of Six Feet Under. I liked the episode very much, especially the scene with Spike having the dual dialog with Willow and Buffy and Xander. It played off his insanity and supported the storyline, very creative.

Buttons, buttons, who's got the buttons?

Posted by: tstowell

I enjoyed last nights episode. It was great to have Willow back. I have to say that I love the character of Anya. I'm so glad that Emma is getting a bigger part this year and a whole episode devoted to her soon! I'm just sad this is her last year. I wonder how they are going to write her off. I assume it will have something to do with Vengancing.

Spike is doing an absolutely incredible job this year. And I do think he had the best line, with the "I'm insane... What's his excuse?" The poseable one is a close second.

So far, pretty happy this season :)

I think the last time we saw her was in "Crush" two seasons ago. Spike offered to kill her (for Buffy), but let her go. So she's still out there somewhere.

??? I had the impression that the machines just lost their signal due to the power going out, or the leads being pulled off of Buffy or something. I didn't think she actually died.

I'd check my tape, but my deadbeat brother-in-law borrowed it and then went to Canada for 2 months.

I suspect that this particular Big Bad can morph into whatever it pleases, so we may be speculating in vain.

Re: Drusilla:

Spoiler Alert! (highlight to read)
She was on most of season two of Angel and was last seen alive at the end of that season. We have no reason to believe that she's dead, AFAIK.

That was my point, I just threw in that joke about Buffy dying twice.

And if you want to nitpick, as a vampire Drusilla's already dead, as are Spike and Angel ;). (remember Spike's song in OMWF?)
However, Lori is correct in that we have no knowledge of whether or not she's been dusted. Based on what we last saw, we'd have to guess that she's still an active vampire.

Posted by: Opus

Not trying to be nitpicky (well, maybe a little :D ) about what happened to Dru, but....

Spoiler Alert! (highlight to read)
The last time she was on Angel was when Angel set Dru and Darla on fire, halfway through season 2. Apparently that was too much for her, and she bailed from L.A., because the next time we saw her was a couple weeks later arriving in Sunnydale on a train to get Spike back (in that Buffy ep "Crush"). After being spurned by Spike, she was alive and quite well, but hasn't been back on either show.

Harmony left Spike's crypt with Dru, and showed up later in L.A. (on Angel) alone, and with no mention of Dru. I was hoping someone there would stake Harmony. But, alas, no.

Is it just me, or does everybody feel sorry for Spike? I feel bad that he's gone schizophrenic.

Did love the Xander slam. The poseable was cute. And when Anya handed Dawn the remote, was it peanut shaped?:)

Clearly I have forgotton somthing. Why are bunnies not to be mentioned in Anya's presence?

Posted by: DanT

Anya has a bunny phobia. First mentioned in 4x04 "Fear, Itself" which is the Season 4 Halloween episode.
Spoiler Alert! (highlight to read)
Xander tells her she's supposed to dress up as something scary, so she shows up to the party in a bunny outfit.

She also sings about her phobia in the musical episode, and it's been mentioned a few other times in passing.

Posted by: JYoung

Anya's deathly afraid of bunnies.... :D

edit: Dan beat me to it...

Also in Tablu Rasa, Anya accidently conjures up a number of bunnies...

SPOILER ALERT!!! (scroll down)

Supposedly in episode 5, the Anya centric episode, we will find out all about her fear of bunnies.

Perhaps this was made clearer in episode #2 (I missed it due to TiVo receiver error), but why is everyone assuming that the shape shifting thingie at the end of the premiere is the big bad for the season? I thought it was just Spike's new-found insanity manifesting itself for us, the home viewers.

Posted by: LoadStar

Well, it's entirely possible it's not the big bad. Rarely have they introduced the big bad for the season in episode 1 of a season... season 1 excepted, of course, since there was only half a season there to work with, so they had to accelerate the "big bad" development. Usually the big bad really takes prominence 1/3 to 1/2 the way through the season. (Last season, we didn't even realize who the big bad really would be until 2/3 the way through.)

However, to play devil's advocate, the nature of what the shape shifting thing said seems to indicate something fairly major and integral to the plot - whether the shape shifting thing is a symptom of the big bad or is actually itself the big bad is yet to be determined. Plus - it's awfully expensive, not to mention a scheduling nightmare, to get all those actors back, and get them back in makeup, for a single scene - you don't do that just for the sheer heck of it. :)

No, episode 2 didn't give us any more info on it. But it just seemed too audacious and over the top for something that they were going to wrap just a few episodes later. These weren't faces from Spike's past, they were faces from the Series' past.

I'm reminded of Stephen King's IT for some reason. Where they saw a lot of scary things for most of the book that were faces of IT, without it ever really showing itself.

So I have to vote that it is the big bad. I'm also afraid that it's going to be using poor crazed Spike at some point before they really confront it much later in the season. Of course, that doesn't really explain the girls who got killed... hmm.

That's an interesting thought. They've previously shown Lovecraftian baddies (not "BIG bads"), so a Kingian sort of challenge wouldn't be particularly unwelcome.

Since the morpher has changed into the big bads of previous seasons, it seems fairly obvious (if heavy-handed) that it's a setup for this season's BB. Though, Joss could well be tossing us a red herring...but I doubt it. :)

Posted by: Mars Rocket

My guess is that the big bad is the Hellmouth itself, come to "life" with some physical apparitions. There have been a few references that make me think this, but of course I can't remember them now...

Besides, they need an excuse to destroy the high school again, and if this really is the last season they'll want to do it in about 19 more episodes.

Yeah, but according to the subject 703 is what's being "spoiled".

I know some of us spoiler-phobes sound like weenies, but if the subject indicates something specific is being "spoiled", please don't take that as cart blanche to throw in other spoilers for the show.

Agreed.

Mark Metcalf (who plays The Master) lives in the area here and is on the radio every week. He mentioned the following about this season of Buffy:

Spoiler Alert! (highlight to read)

Apparently The Master will be in about 5-6 episodes this season. So I'd wager that this morphing thing IS the big bad since why else would they need him for so many episodes?

Ok, I knew Mark lived in the area - saw a story that said that he and his wife own a restaurant up in Mequon - but I didn't realize he was on the radio every week. What station is he on?

They have him on the Bob & Brian show (on Lazer 103) about once a week doing DVD/movie reviews. The day/time varies.
