Smallville 2.03 SPOILERS!!!

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: Bryanmc

Well, Pete knows.

Whaddya think?

Posted by: cancermatt

I think I'm beginning to actually enjoy Smallville... for all the wrong reasons. Nitpicking, mainly. Anyway, a couple of ideas for this week's episode:

Since the season premiere ended and the second episode started, we went through an entire summer (three months), and the spaceship goes fleeting away into a tall cornfield. No one in the Clark household goes looking for it for an entire summer (at least from what we see) and now, after the summer's over, Pete stumbles upon it. One prob: the corn was the same length three months ago (premiere) as it is now (episode 3) and the farmer STILL hasn't driven his combine in the field? Sounds like some supercorn myself, since it hasn't died yet, or grown taller.

Why wasn't Clark at least worried about looking for the ship? Why didn't he go looking for the ship? And when will that farmer chop his crop?

BTW, I did enjoy the Arthur-Merlin reference.

I had fun with this episode, but I always enjoy "mythology" episodes.

I don't have any kind of response for the corn height, maybe some farmer types could let us know if it should have been harvested.

But as for looking for the ship, remember the last time it was seen, Martha saw it fly off. They had no idea if it was even still on the planet, and if so where it may be.

I'm sure they kept an eye out for it during the tornado clean up, but there was no reason for them to believe it was "lost" in Smallville somewhere.

Well I'm glad Pete is finally getting more air time. His character has really been ignored. WHAT monster do you think that doctor turned into? You notice that his body wasn't there when Lex and his father came to his barn. I wonder who else finds out he is "Super Clark". I don't think in the movies that Lana Lang from Superman 3 (played by the same actress, Annette O'Toole, who plays Smallville Clark's mom) knew that Clark Kent was Superman.

BUT the show seems to deviate from the old movies so who knows.

Posted by: Philosofy

I'm liking this show a lot. In the comics (Superman for All Seasons), he does let Lana in on his powers after graduation. But there is no Chloe in the comics to complicate things.

I do think they need to dump Lionel Luthor, though.

Oh, I DO disagree.

I'm loving John Glover in that role and was very happy to see him added to the opening credits. I'm counting on more involvement.

And, BTW, don't rely on the movies for any kind of Superman cannon. They were very close to being very wrong (and many times were) and without Donner directing the first one, they may have never "taken off" so to speak.

Great entertainment though.

Posted by: JYoung

about time Pete got some credit. I think that they did a good job on it.

I'm guessing that next week's episode is the red kryptonite episode....

Posted by: Pan Chun

Knew it'd be Pete...but I only got the first half-hour thanks to baseball (Local FOX station runs WB shows and I didn't pad it). I'll probably download the episode or catch the rest on the repeat. <shrug> :)

He's super! He doesn't need "cannon"! And that's part of the canon of the story. ;) I agree about John Glover, though...I've always liked him--I remember a couple of roles he played back in the mid-'80s that stuck with me. He played a small role on The Days and Nights of Molly Dodd for a few episodes, and in the Twilight Zone revival, he played an alien in the episode "A Small Talent for War" which was superb! :)

Posted by: jlb

Great episode. My only thought is that Pete went from being upset with Clark to being best buddies again rather quickly. I thought they might stretch that out another episode or two. Anyway, looking forward to how this new knowledge plays out in future episodes.....

Posted by: Rcrew

Enjoyed the show.

Bryan, as far as corn goes, it could be still standing and unharvested now, but if that was the case, it would only have been about 12 inches tall when the tornado came through.

I didn't think Pete came around too quickly, considering the threat on his life made him see how it could be dangerous knowledge. Well played out senario.

Enjoyed last night's episode. Especially liked Clark using his powers in non-traditional (read: teenage like) fashion. Like shooting hoops from 50 feet away!

Pan Chun: Here in Cleveland, Smallville is rebroadcst on Sundays. Don't know if that would help because you probably need the WB channel.

Bryanmc: Have you ever heard about a re-make of the Superman movie, with a darker, Batman-type feel? I imagine with the success of Spidey this summer, you can't rule anything out. Personally, I'd like to see it done because of the improvement in special effects since the original.

Thanks for the heads-up! TiVo shows WPIX showing it Sunday afternoon at 5. Won't be in stereo on that channel, but big whoop...I'll get to see the second half! :)

We had a thread about the new movie: don't get your hopes up. In it, Krypton never explodes, Superman fights a bunch of Kryptonians and dies. His daddy Jorel senses he's dead, so he kills himself to go have a chat with Clark in the afterlife, and convinces him to give life another chance, so Supes decides to live again, and so is resurrected. After he comes back to life, he has one more baddie to fight: Lex Luthor. But hold on: Lex is a Kryptonian also! Think it can't get any worse?
Spoiler Alert! (highlight to read)
They are thinking of cancelling Smallville because the setting doesn't jibe with the movie.

Posted by: Graymalkin

Yes, let's do that, Phil. And let's never show any of the Superman TV shows and animated series and movies and already published comics ever again, because they'll all conflict with this new movie.

And let's not call this guy Superman. Call him Nightwing!
That was Superman's superhero identity in the Bottle City of Kandor in the Silver Age comics. Jimmy Olsen was his sidekick, Flamebird. Any similarities to Batman and Robin were definitely intended. :D

Posted by: Pan Chun

While the Kandorian "Nightwing & Flamebird" stories are no longer canon (wiped out in the Crisis), it's interesting that the "Nightwing" name lives on in the comics...with Dick Grayson taking that persona after giving up being "Robin"! :)

Posted by: cancermatt

I may be totally off target here, but I really think Dick Grayson was Nightwing first. But if I'm wrong, someone please tell me the timeline of this "Nightwing and Flamebird" story.

You are incorrect.

This information comes from this site:
quote:
Nightwing & Flamebird: The Origin of the Names

Superman as Nightwing, Jimmy Olsen as Flamebird

First Appearance: Superman as Nightwing, Jimmy Olsen as Flamebird: SUPERMAN #158 (first series)

When some citizens of the bottle-city of Kandor enlarged themselves and stole certain elements Superman and Jimmy Olsen entered the bottle-city to investigate. There, a friend of Jor-El's, Nor-Kann, warned them of danger. It seems same Kandorians believed Superman had a way of enlarging the city and had withheld it from them.

Forced to hide as a fugitive, Superman decided he and Jimmy should adopt disguises like those of Batman and Robin. Nor provided them with a secret cave, now called the Nightcave. Since there are no bats or robins among Kandor's Kryptonian wildlife, they modeled their outfits on those of two Kryptonian birds, the nightwing and flamebird. When Superman, trying to pass himself off as his look-alike, Van-Zee [a Kryptonian scientist], was captured, Van dressed for the first time as Nightwing to rescue him.

Twice more, Superman and Jimmy battled menaces in Kandor as Nightwing and Flamebird, the second time with Batman and Robin along. It was this experience that inspired Dick Grayson, some time later, to adopt the identity of Earth's Nightwing when he gave up his Robin ID.

Current Continuity: Nightwing, the Kryptonian hero of legend

First Appearance: Nightwing Secret Files #1

Nightwing Secret Files #1 features a story that takes place just after Batman has 'fired' Dick Grayson as Robin, and Dick Grayson is doing some soul searching. He encounters Superman, who tells him a story of a Kryptonian Legendary hero...

"There was a man on my homeworld many centuries before my birth who was cast out of his family as you were. He dreamt of justice. He dreamt of helping the weak. He dreamt of showing his family that he was better than they gave him credit for. He used his talents and his skills to fight for those who couldn't fight for themselves. He became a legend."

"No one knew his real name. He was called only - Nightwing."

Dick's reply: "I like it." And an inspiration for a new legend is born.

I agree... I think that they handled the situation very well... He was angry and felt betrayed, but when all was said and done, he understood the why behind the secrecy... Plus, how can you stay mad at someone that comes to your rescue just in the nick of time ;)

All in all, I liked this episode quite a bit... it didn't rely on kryptonite for it's story line like so may other episodes have... Maybe this season will be different as promised

Posted by: bobcarn

I just Tivo'd myself out tonight and watched the episode. I liked it a lot. I loved the part where Clark runs past the car, stops it, and says "We gotta talk!" hehehe

In the movies, Lana didn't know Clark was Superman. I don't know about the comics, but in the cartoon, she knows. I don't know if she'll ever know in this series, but I seriously doubt that she'll be clued in on it this season.

Here's a minor spoiler about what I think the plot is about next week (though I imagine most people have an idea by now, I'm only going by the few clips they showed at the end of this episode):

Spoiler Alert! (highlight to read)
red kryptonite -- sorry Sromkie :)

Posted by: Sromkie

Slightly off topic but... related to smallville... Not that anyone here watches commercials anymore, but Ihave been in a hotel for a couple of weeks now and have had to... to my surprise, there was "Lana Lang" pitching Nutragena... Just figured I'd share :)

Posted by: Philosofy

OK, I found this out today, and I'm not going to tag it with spoilers. In the current comics continuim, Pete Ross is Lex' vice president? How the heck did that happen? And he's also married to Lana Lang. In the current comics, Lana knows about Clark, but not Pete. So, if Lex doesn't finish his term, Lana becomes FLOTUS, and Pete becomes POTUS.

Posted by: Pan Chun

Yup...it's true...Pete was just another co-student at Smallville High...

Lana was Clark's high school crush who he took for a late night flight around town before leaving for good.

Of course, 10 years later when a "super man" was declared in the Daily Planet (and worldwide), Lana knew EXACTLY who it was in reference to!

Pete, of course, never had a clue...and being the local small-town guy he was, he STILL was able to woo small-town Lana...(Clark had left town YEARS before).

When Luthor ran for President, he needed a midwestern, stalwart running mate...Pete Ross (long since married to Lana Lang, btw...) fit the bill perfectly, considering he was already a congressman (or was he a senator by this point?)...!

So Luthor put Pete's "midwestern naivete" to work to help get Lex elected...and it worked!

Hard to say whether Luthor will fail to serve out his first term...so far, he's been pretty much above the law as far as anything that might remove him from power!

That might, of course, CHANGE, at any moment...! ;)

Wait, Wait, Wait...

Lex Luthor is PRESIDENT on thr UNNITED STATES in the comics right now?? God, am I glad I quit reading comics!

Does this stretch into any other DC comics? I'd imagine that President Luthor would have his fingers in many different pies.

Good grief, turn my back on DC for 15 years, and look what happens...

Posted by: ClutchBrake

OK episode.
I don't care how bad I get flamed for it, I just have to say it. The actor who plays Pete is HORRIBLE. He is the most transparent character on the show and he delivers his lines like a stand-in borrowed from a high school acting class.

Posted by: Philosofy

I found out about Lex being president when he decided to get some revenge on Bruce Wayne. Big mistake.

What happened????

Every time I start talking Batman with you Phil, I remind myself I want to subscribe to the series so I can start reading it again, and I keep forgetting to. :(

Posted by: Philosofy

OK, here we go (and it'll ruin the storyline if you read any further)
Spoiler Alert! (highlight to read)

Bruce Wayne gets framed for the murder of his girlfriend du jour. He gets framed real, real good. Even Nightwing, Robin, Oracle, and Batgirl think its possible he did it. Bruce gets tried and convicted, but then skips out somehow (missed that issue, dammit). He leaves another Bat trainee, Sasha (his assigned bodyguard from Wayne Enterprises, who is ex-secret service, and has figured out Bruce is Batman, so he trained her to fight crime in tights) sitting in the hoosgow for 6 months, since she was tried as an accomplice.

Eventually, the Bat Family finds out how Bruce was framed, but the question was: who did it? Whoever did it snuck in from the Batcave, so they know he's Batman. Turns out it was David Cain, the world's best assassin, and the man who trained the current Batgirl to be an assassin also (raised her as his own daughter). Cain was hired by Luthor, who doesn't know Bruce is Batman. Lex wanted revenge because Bruce stopped some of his power plays to grab Gotham during No Man's Land. This whole story took place over a year in several books: Batman, Robin, Nightwing, Birds of Prey, Azrael, Detective, and Batgirl.

If you want more info, ask Pan. I can't remember any more. Its late. :)

Totally cool Phil! Thanks! I definitely have to get a subscription to these mags!!!

Actually, I stopped reading all the Bat-titles except for Robin and Birds of Prey, so I haven't followed ANY of the "Bruce Wayne: Fugitive" storyline except what crosses over! No help here...sorry!

I am, however, fairly current with the Superman mags (they're CANCELING one of them! :( BUT...they're going to replace it with a "Silver Age Superman Stories" title! That should be interesting!)

Which one? The quarterly? The Superman books were the only ones I missed when I stopped reading back in 97 or so.....

Posted by: JYoung

wait, Azrael has his own book and is still on good terms with the Bat Family??????
Last I saw Jean Paul Valley was in the Prodigal storyline and he didn't seem to with it and Dick was still PO'd with him......

Posted by: Philosofy

Jyoung, they hinted at times that Jean Paul might be the one who framed Batman. I don't read Azrael at all except for the Nightwing crossover.

Posted by: Pan Chun

It's the "youngest" of the "super books". Makes sense, though...ACTION will NEVER be canceled. ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN was the original SUPERMAN title, so it's safe...and, of course, the SUPERMAN re-launch title (post-crisis) is the namesake...so MAN OF STEEL was the obvious choice.

Posted by: Bryanmc

I'll be sad to see it go, simply for entertainment sake.

However, if they had to get rid of one, there's no question that it's the one I'd have picked.

Looking forward to the Silver Age stuff.

Posted by: cancermatt

I sure wish DC would cancel a few of the Batman titles, that way there won't be so many crossovers into individual titles. Batman. Detective Comics. There's no need for any of the rest. Same applies to all the supporting characters of Bruce Wayne.

And even though I'm no fan of the multitude of Superman titles (I tried wading through ALL of them during the death of Supes, but didn't like it), I think the more that's cancelled, the merrier.

All the crossovers into multiple titles (re: bruce wayne: fugitive and dark night, et al.) are hell on trying to keep up with the story. Once you miss one title, you're out of luck, then I stop trying to collect the story completely. Good thing GI Joe and Transformers don't have multiple titles to cross over, especially for an entire year. Glad to hear from someone who is keeping track with the long storylines.

Matt

On the reference to the possible movie more info on it is at http://www.aint-it-cool-news.com/display.cgi?id=13350. It basically outlinesthe entire script for the movie and its as bad as the guy above said it was.

Finally caught the second half and it went pretty much as I anticipated. Pretty likeable overall. I like that fact that Clark has a confidant who is in on the secret. "This is gonna be fun", indeed! :)

If you remember the episode "hourglass" when the psychic looks into Lex's future (very cool sequence), it shows him in the oval office.

Great show, Smallville has quickly moved into my #1 SP position.
