Virgin image questions...
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I've read some of the FAQ and websites available, but seen some conflicting information. Please, correct me if I'm wrong in my assumptions:
1) The primary purpose is to maintain a good backup. In an ideal upgrade situation (money not being an issue), you would create a new A drive and never actually use the original one except in an emergency.
2) A virgin image is made from a TiVo which has not been used at all (no SP, no phone calls, no initializing, no videos).
3) The Hinsdale tutorial indicates virgin images are no longer needed, and in fact, backing up after setup would make your possible restoration more up-to-date.
That said, why are virgin images considered such a big deal? Was it for sharing images with other people who screwed up their original? I heard that creating a new A drive from a virgin image somehow allows more room on the new drive. Any truth to that?
Thanks.

At least in the DirecTiVo world, virgin images can be helpful because the software serializes to the machine - so if you want to use the image in other hardware, a virgin backup saves you the hassle of doing a "Clear and Delete Everything".
But otherwise, you are right. If you are making a backup for yourself, there is nothing golden about a virgin one - that's really for sharing the image file.
If you are adding software to your TiVo, you might want to have a backup from before you add anything, just in case you want to easily get back to square one, but if its just SPs, settings, and recordings, it shouldn't really matter.
