My cousin in california shipped me a drive to restore an image back to so he can have his TiVo up and running again. Once I do the restore, could I disconnect my drives in my TiVo which is a philips, and plug in the newly restored hard drive in to make sure it worked?

No no no! You can't mix images from different brands of TiVos. This is one fo the thinsg that make people here call you a Moron.

Yes, you should be able to establish that it's working. Normally doing this would make you a Moron, but as long as you don't let it dial out, nothing bad will happen.

Stormy, the hardware's the same, so he can perform his tests. It's the software update process that gets broken when you do this, so as long as the TiVo doesn't dial (and, infact as long as it doesn't try and update if it does dial) this problem won't arise.

You guys wouldn't be the first to call me a moron in my life:D
I wasn't going to go through the setup or let it dial out, I just wanted to make sure that it would power up and that the restore worked before shipping it back.

Just make sure it's a Sony image you're putting on the drive.
