Cheap USB Ethernet Adapters

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: Smirks

Hello everyone,

I'm fairly new to TiVo and to the community, I think this is my 3rd post.

Anywho, I just bought my first Series 2 60-hr TiVo last weekend and while it is quite an adjustment I am beginning to love it. I've been wanting to get broadband connectivity for it since I got it, but pricing for the ethernet adapters has been just a tad too much for me.

Well, today I decided to check out half.com and found the 3com 3c460b for $5.99, so I went for it....

So, if you're looking for a TiVo supported USB ethernet adapter, check out http://www.half.com :)

There....

Chris

I'm a new TiVo 60 hour Series 2 owner and I have found this forum invaluable. One suggestion concerning the broadband connection for Series 2 TiVo though. Above my post is a list of viable adapters, however I think it would be beneficial if we had a list of adapters that work and are in use.

For instance I bought a Siemens SpeedStream USB 10/100 Ethernet Adapter Model: SIM SS1001 which DOES NOT work.

But then I read on another post about someone using a Linksys EtherFast 10/100 Compact USB Network Adapter Model: LKS USB100M and this one worked without any problems.

Just an idea.

Do you know of any wireless adapters which work with the series 2 SA TIVO /
I bought a Linksys WUSB11 and I can't get it to work. Linksys is no help. They never heard of a TIVO and there is no Linux drivers for it.
I am roayally T-d off.

PS. Is there a way to reply without all those quotes showing up ?

I've seen it posted on several other threads that the Linksys module will work ok _IF_ you get it working from your PeeCee first. When it powers down it will remember all the (working) settings then when you power it up (on the TiVo) it will "remember" those settings and work correctly. Search the forums for Linksys and you should find those references.

Has any one used a USB100M from linksys. It is for USB 2 vers USB 1.1. I don't know if there is a driver issue or not.

I have been using a 100M for about three months now with no problem. I have a Series 2 running 3.2 software. That's running into a D-Link DI-604 router/hub running into a Motorola SB4200 modem.

Anyone use the Linksys 200M? It is the only one I found at Best Buy. Thanks.

The wireless adapter does not work (yet at least). If you want to do wireless you'll need a USB ethernet adapter and a wireless bridge, like the Linksys WET11. Exchange your WUSB11 for a WET11 and get a cheap usb ethernet.

Rumor has it that the upcoming home media option will add support for usb wireless devices.

I have used:

1. 3Com 3C460B,
2. Linksys USB100M

with 100% success on my Series 2 :)

The 200M is the USB2 device...an upgrade path for my "next" TiVo...SAME price as the USB100M at my BestBuy.

Great form factor: http://www.linksys.com/products/groupimgwhite/usb200m.jpg
...if portability is necessary. Bulkier adapters, like the 3C460B is just fine hanginff the back of my TiVo unit too... :)

I bought the USB100M when I bought the Tivo2 this weekend, and it worked great. You have to put a ,#401 in the prefix.

Thanks
John

However, you might want to have some type of support. I believe in buying good, solid cable. But I wouldn't want the weight of the cable pulling on the USB adapter since my Tivo sits high off the floor.

I sat my (now unused) VCR on part of the Cat-5 cable to keep the weight from pulling the dongle out of the USB slot.

There appears to be another option.

ACraigL mentions in this thread that the SMC 2670W wireless ethernet adapter works great for him. It accomplishes the same concept as a bridge but seems to run a bit cheaper (maybe $20 or so).

Of course, as mentioned above, I would like to think support for wireless USB devices will be built into 4.0 to avoid turning unwilling TiVo fans into structured cabling techs for the sake of enjoying HMO!

When setting up my USB/ethernet dial-in connection, I needed to:
(1) connection the cables
(2) reboot the TIVO
(3) change the dialing prefix, etc.
At this point, it was supposed to work, but it didn't. So I tried step 4
(4) reboot again.

After step 3, I had a good ethernet connection to the TIVO, green light and all, but it failed at the "negotiation" phase. Maybe it was a quirk, but for I post it here in case it might help someone else.

I looked around this forum and have found several reports that the USB200M does *not* work.

It was the only Linksys at Best Buy, and when we plug it in it gets a link... but on reboot of the TiVo the link lights never come on. This was during the guided setup, so I'm assuming that there is no difference on the kernel level, just the software level.

Also using Linux 2.4.18 and the pegasus drivers hotplug reports that no driver claims the device when I plug it in... so looks like a deffinate non-working combination.

Check out http://shentech.com/
and search for "Farallon"

I got three USB adapters shipped for $24.13. They are working great with my Stand Alone Series 2 60 and 80 hour units.

If your a retail tool, such as myself, the cheapie CompUSA branded USB 1.1 Ethernet adapter priced at $19.99 worked just fine for me on an AT&T Branded Series2.

Just plugged it in, jacked the ethernet, restarted the Tivo and wallah it got DHCP from my 2Wire firewall, slapped in the ,#401 dialing prefix and my "daily call" was nearly instantaneous, impressive!

3COM 3C460B 10/100 Ethernet USB NEW - $9

<http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...&category=11725>

Posted by: karlp

The first one I found after ditching the USB200M was the Linksys USB100M.

Had to reboot twice. The first time the link light came on and it got a DHCP lease (linux server), but it failed to test connect saying, "failed negotiating". The second reboot worked.

We got a 43kbps download rate. Unfortunately the download was interrupted as we're on a high packet loss (2%) wireless connection.

I bought the LinkSys 200M and it didn't work on my 60 hour stand alone. I kept trying until my wife did this, , about 10 reboots. I knew it was time to do something drastic...I came here, found the errors of my ways, and returned the 200M for the Linksys 100M. The Linksys 100M worked like a charm!. Thanks all. :D

Note that the older 3COM model, the 3C19250, does NOT work. I just tried this at home as I had one laying around. Be careful, becase it looks physically identical to the 3C460B!!

I didn't think it would work (that model is not listed in the supported hardware), but I wanted to try it and let you guys know. I have one of the cheapie farallon models on order from a few days ago and I got impatient. ;)

Posted by: CompGuruMan

These WILL work. You can try a cheap one if you want but these will have the best results.

Wired:
Linksys USB100M ($39.99), Linksys USB100TX ($44.95)

Wireless:
Linksys WUSB11 v2.6 ($69.99)

All three are available and in stock at Circuit City with a 30 day 110% price match to any local competitor.

(can you tell that i work at circuit city :) )

Which of the adapters work at usb 2.0 speeds? I would like to buy one that can handle transfers faster than 12Mbps if I someday want to copy stuff from tivo to my pc.

Posted by: weaknees

I'm guessing the answer is that any adapter that promises 100 mb will work at USB2.0 - USB1.1 wouldn't be fast enough. But maybe someone out there has a definitive answer?

But also, there wont be any way in HMO to copy shows to your PC from a TiVo - to my knowledge. This is pretty much exactly what TiVo is trying to keep from happening - and the HMO move is a way to allow sharing but only under their specifed circumstances. You will be able to move still photos and maybe even video from your PC to your TiVo - but not recordings of aired broadcasts the other way.

weeknees> I'm guessing the answer is that any adapter that promises 100 mb will work at USB2.0 - USB1.1 wouldn't be fast enough.

I assumed this also but was wrong. Several of the 100 Mbps network adapter's are only USB 1.0 (12 Mbps).

For example, at: <http://www.linksys.com/products/pro...rid=26&prid=126> the second paragraph states: "The 10/100 USB Network Adapter features a maximum of 12Mbps throughput (the maximum throughput supported by USB), [...]".

Note also that the system that you're pluggin it into has to be USB 2.0 to get the transfer rates faster than 12 Mbps. Early Series 2 were USB 1.0 (sorry, I don't have the exact model numbers but I believe the Sony SVR-3000 is one of these). The AT&T & TiVo brand units all have USB 2.0. Most PeeCee's and Mac's are USB 1.0. PlayStation 2's are USB 2.0.

So why would anyone want a 100 Mbps network adapter that is limited to 12 Mbps by USB 1.0? Because a lot of the early 10/100 Mbps hubs would only work at 10 Mbps if _ANY_ port was connected to a 10 Mbps device. You can tell if you have a newer 10/100 Mbps hub (or switch) if it has individual 100 Mbps indicator lights for each port. These hubs/switches are able to run different ports at different speeds. If your hub/switch only has one 100 Mbps indicator then all ports are run at the same speed and connecting one 10 Mbps device slows everyone down to 10 Mbps. :(
