SVR2000 vs Series 2

I've had a sony SVR2000 for 2 years. Mostly due to the lack of a 2nd tuner I dropped the $$ for a tivo series 2 unit. Couple of things I'm not thrilled with. I guess sony does a better tivo then tivo. :(
I really don't care for the 'peanut' remote with series 2. Sony remote is far better, imho. The arrow pad alone is junk on the peanut.
The lack of a power/standby button ON THE REMOTE has a huge oopppsss. Having to go through the menus for standby is crazy. yeah, I know it only turns the green light off and kills the vid feed.
In an age of computer fans becoming nearly silent, tivo went the OTHER way. Series 2 fan(s) make a huge racket compared to the svr2000.
Also think if you already have a lifetime service deal for a unit you SHOULD get a discount for a 2nd unit, imho.
Also think as a 'digital' recorder not having digi outputs is more then a little bit odd. they spend $$ on USB ports that currently have no use, but fail to even put audio dig outputs. h e l l o? Priorities are a bit frazzled.

I agree that I also don't like the peanut remote. I have a Sony SVR2000 and a Philips HDR212 that I bought later. But this is a much debate topic anyhow.
As for standby button and so on. What's the point? It's useless anyhow. I never bother turning it "off". It doesn't turn anything off other than the video feed. It doesn't cut down on power consumption or wear and tear.
Yeah, I too wish for a discount on the sub for a 2nd unit... such is life.
What's the point of a digital output? How are you getting digital audio or video into the unit?

It cuts down on hard drive wear by 50%, specifically the part where it reads back the data to display on the television.
Also, if you sleep with your TiVo, a button like what they have on the Sony units would effectively turn off your "night light". :) I wish the remotes were interoperable.

Is this a fact, or is this how you think it works? Not being able to see the video doesn't necessarily mean the drive is not accessed.

There's also the fact that the drive's still spinning. Even if the playback stream were disabled, it wouldn't constitute a "50%" reduction in wear. There have been dozens of threads on hard disk wear; try doing a search to find some of them.

You do realize that the Series 2 standalone units have only one tuner as well? The only boxes with 2 tuners are the DirecTV/Tivo combo boxes (and the series 2 version of it is just coming out now).

I have both units and I channel my video feed through an external DVDO line doubler. The ability to eliminate video out from the series 2 without going through the menus would be a benefit because no video feed in, is the only way my line doubler will turn itself off. My SVR-2000 dealt with this just fine but the series 2 won't.
Does anyone know of a discrete code to put the series 2 into standby without going through the menus?

I have the remote that comes with a sony ess class receiver; thinking of getting a new one 'cause now I have the ess remote and 2 tivo's. :(
Point of the standby button? Ahh, the diode light? This is calif? It was an oversight, imho. Again, spent money on the USB ports (which have zero current use). A simple OFF button would have been nice.
At least with dig audio it would have been a single connection. yeah, I suppose an analog to dig conv would have been as much $$ as the USB ports (sorry tivo). :) guess I want my sony ess to be all that it can be, even if it was analog to dig signal.

I'm kind of in the same boat you are, except that my second TiVo is a Philips HDR312.
The peanut remote is a pain...I've absentmindedly picked it up and used it upside down a couple of times. The IR bounces off of me and TiVo rewinds instead of fast-forwarding. Dammit. The Sony remote is vastly superior...excellent ergonomics, great button feel, etc. The only two things I would change about the Sony remote are: (1) I would switch the positions of the play and pause buttons. Having the play button between the REV/FFW buttons would make more sense to me...and (2) I would make it out of the same material that the Philips remote is constructed with...the paint on my Sony looks horrible after two years of use.
I don't agree with the lifetime subscription thing as stated, mostly because it would lead to abuses. I could buy multiple units, claim the discount for the lifetime subscription, and then sell them for a premium. I don't believe in taking money out of TiVo's pockets that way.
What would be a good idea is to create a mirroring arrangement for multiple-standalone households, the same way DTiVos are done right now. Even if there was a nominal fee involved ($50 or so), I would jump on it big-time.
The USB ports are going to have a use soon enough. And currently they can be used to receive your guide data over your home network/broadband connection.
As for the standby...there are very few logical reasons to put your TiVo in standby. Mine are on 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and are only powered down for upgrades. The drives will continue to spin while in standby mode, and the drive heads will continue to seek. "Wear and tear" on mpeg decoder chips is negligible.
aciurczak-- he picked up a second standalone so that he could have a second tuner, not so that he could have a two-tuner box.

I'm against punishing all for what a few =might= do. The bottom line is those with more than unit pay as if they are a completely new customer. We receive elzippo. It would not be hard, imho, for tivo to do something.

haven't seen any documents on using the USB to home network (I have a home network). Not sure that is a benefit tho, unless you don't have a phone line available...

Yeah, but I want it anyway. sony spoiled me and tivo did an oops.

I also am in the same boat. I had an Svr-2000 that recently went bad. I was surprised when I took it back to BB and with the esp they swapped it out for a new 80 hour. I had heard rumors that they didn't swap the Sony's out. but I am currently impatiently waiting for the SVR-3000 to come out so I can pass the peanut to my mom. I may then add a directivo to the lineup if I find a good deal around christmas, or if Sony comes out with their model.
