Deleting Suggestions ( newbie query )
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

As a new "unbeatable" owner I'm very impressed with my Tivo so far. I'm surprised however that I can't delete suggestions ( or I can't see how to ? ). Given that I can scan the suggestions and explicitly set one to record, it would seem logical that I could also explicitly remove an item from the list.
At the moment my Tivo will shortly be recording Songs of Praise because I have shown an interest in the Keraang Awards !
Am I wrong ? Any advice ?
Thanks
Dave

Thumb down Songs of Praise. It doesn't have much to go on yet, it needs to get to know you a bit better ;)

Although some people don't think you should use thumbs down at all (I have to admit I've got one or two of those programmes I really can't stand thumbs down'd)

Actually I don't allow it to record suggestions and I don't thumb anything up or down. My TiVo doesn't really know me at all and is rather confused about what I like and don't like, because I often get it to record things for other people.
I occasionally look at what its suggesting and have a good laugh. It really hasn't got a clue!

The TiVo's Suggestions list IS NOT a list of what it is going to record for you - it is intended for you to browse to see if anything catches your eye.
TiVo will actually record a different list, which may include programmes not in TiVo's Suggestions, and it will not necessarily record things in the list either.

It's possible that I haven't let it record suggestions for long enough, but this has never been the case for me. It always picked from the list. May be just me :)

I have suggestions enabled because it occassionally picks up things I like that i've missed... or a programme that another channel is now showing that I have an SP for on another channel.
Although it still has a fascination with recording 'Saved by the Bell' every day!

Not sure where this question should go - here seems as good a place as any!
I have heard that Tivo have 'played' with the suggestions list such that it will automatically record programs that some of the program makers would like us to watch
Even so - love my Tivo !

I think you may bee getting suggestions confused with "Enhanced Content", whereby programmes are recorded by TiVo into a reserved area of the hard disk as the behest of sponsors. This happens a lot in the US, but only once so far here.

I keep my thumbs database blank (cancelling the auto-thumb on new recordings, so actually it contains a long list of zeroes rather than nothing at all).
My 'TiVo Suggestions' page always tells me I need to go an thumb some programmes - nothing has ever appeared in there unexpectedly.
So I don't think that rumour is right.
Anyway, are you saying that broadcasters only want us to watch /some/ of the shows they transmit? Why to they bother showing the others?
Posted by: Warble
No, see Sandertons'previous reply. It is that the broadcaster/sponsor (whoever) has an agreement with Tivo that when you get your listings it includes instructions to record a program automatically - independently of what your own Tivo's suggestions may be. I had heard that this happened in America (again see above) but was unsure if the same happens here.
In itself no real big deal as you just dont have to watch it - but then again?

Er, yes. I was following up Stuart's post.
What I meant was, there's no evidence that the suggestions system is being tampered with (cf Internet search engines selling hits). I would expect any artificially boosted shows to show up on my suggestions panel. Your suggestions are all your own.
If you search for the mega-thread caused by the Dossa and Joe incident, you'll see not everyone was in the 'no real big deal' camp. It gave me a bit of a shock to see the red light come on (I don't use suggestions and was pretty sure TiVo wasn't going to record anything else that evening), but other than that found the whole incident too ridiculous to be really upsetting. I am glad TCP's don't appear to be likely to return in that form, though.

What is the best way to train a TiVo? Should I give the thumbs down when it suggests something (yet again) on the kids channel 'Trouble', or should I simply tell it only when I like a programme?
My TiVo and I have known each other for well over a year now, but it still comes up with some very eccentric choices from time to time. However, in common with several others who have contributed to this thread, I leave suggestions enabled because it does occasionally find a gem for me.

I wouldnn't mind having Tivo record suggestions, but I know that my unit would be filled with daily Star Trek and The Bill, so I don't bother :)

James,
My TiVo always used to record from Trouble and the only way to get it to stop was to take Trouble out of the Channels I Recieve list. Since then my suggestions have been pretty good.
It's been pointed out to me before that you shouldn't have to do this to get suggestions to work but seeing as I never watch Trouble it seemed like a good idea to me...

Which is exactly why I take the thumbs off all my "real" favourite shows, but leave them on the more marginal ones.
The chances of my missing a major new SF series are low, if only because the SFX guys down the hall should mention it, but the odds of missing a one-off history documentary on Dicovery are high!
