TiVo in trouble?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: Morf

I've been a TiVo user for several months now, and absolutely love it. Everyone I've shown it to has been impressed. However, today a co-worker who is interested in buying a unit expressed concern about TiVo's future. A friend of his claimed that TiVo was in risk of going bankrupt and closing any time now.

Needless to say, this scared the crap out of me.

I immediately scoured the net for any news stories I could find about TiVo's financial status, but all I could find were articles from the middle of 2001, mentioning TiVo's possible financial problems, but nothing more.

Can anyone help provide more information? Is TiVo near the end?

Enough! Enough!

:D

People have been making posts asking the same thing for the last 3 years yet we are still here.

My usual response applies:

Yes. It is in dire trouble. I head they are already going under. You should sell me your TiVo for $10 shipped while you can still make a dollar off of it.

My mother's fiance's cousin's gastro-internalist said TiVo was doing fine, and I really think he ought to know.

Posted by: avaloncourt

I'm not a TivoPony but I play one on television. :)

Posted by: scotty321

You're right, they're in trouble, I'll buy your TiVo off you for $15 -- that's $5 more than jerobi offered!! :D

As was once said, "The reports of my death have been greatly exxagerated" and I would say this applies to TiVo as well. Could they go under? Sure, but I for one have 2 SA's and will getting a third along with 5 of my friends who will be getting DirectTivo S2's soon. So, pickup that peanut and ENJOY!!!

Join The Motley Fool where there is a message board of investors and get all the company financials and stock talk you need. TiVo the company is doing fine.

There is always someone looking for an excuse not to buy or ready to criticize someone else's purchase. The most common excuses from the elite naysayers are I don't watch much TV and they know what I'll be watching.

Enjoy your TiVo. I've had mine for over 2 years and feel pretty smart. TiVo is on the path to doubling subscribers to one million within 9 months with the launch of DirecTV's Series2 Digital Satellite Recorder Powered by TiVo.

Don't worry about a thing. TiVo's name brand, superior technology and patents are quite valuable and would be sold to another company if anything.

Hmm, wasn't there a "Peanuts" storyline about this very subject 30 years ago?

Hi Morf - yes, the rumors are all true. I'll take your TiVo off your hands for $20 if it'll help you sleep at night. It's not for me you understand, I donate them to needy individuals who just seem glad to have TiVo regardless of doom and gloom prophesies.

Morf, just in case you haven't clearly seen the dripping sarcasm in the responses here, your co-workers friend is full of (insert 4-letter expletive here, which in this context stands for 'misinformation').

Do I hear $25?

Posted by: Morf

Much thanks to the few people that gave me honest answers.

mtchamp, I will check out the Motley Fool like you suggest.

The rest of you, believe me that I did search the forums for a thread such as this, but found a whole lot of nothing. My internet search only found stories that tell of the financial trouble TiVo is/was in, and I could find none that said "Nevermind. TiVo doing great!':

I'd offer to swap it for TiVo stock, but I guess we're not allowed to discuss that here. :D

Nevermind. TiVo doing great!

Sure, it can be scary investing in a new technology, but the way I see it, even if they go under, they have a strong enough audience that any number of solvent companies would like to get their hands on it and maintain the service. ;)

Morf, what did you expect? Did you think you'd find some "secret" information on an internet forum? This is a TiVo enthusiasts' forum, but we are no more privy to inside information about TiVo the company than anybody on the street. And TiVo employees who post here aren't about to divulge any inside information if they want to keep their jobs.

So all you're going to find is speculation, mostly with a positive slant based on the fact that most of us like TiVo and want the company to prosper, otherwise we wouldn't be here.

Sorry if you were disappointed.

I agree, not enough open minds around here...I'd like to see some more honest discussion in forums. I've been around lots of forums, and most are more open to differing opinions. Personally, I don't expect the company to go under, and even if it does, I don't think it will be a problem, as I mentioned in my earlier post. ;)

TiVo zealotry is a well know phenomenon and is often referred to by the media. It is one of few products that has generated such a devoted following. People who come here genuinely seeking a solution or help receive plenty of sympathy and advice.

Everyone here WANTS TiVo to be a better company, to be profitable, etc., because we can't imagine ever watching TV without it. There are many threads about how TiVo could improve just about every aspect of their operation.

As of yet most of us feel there's no viable, long term alternative. Consequently, those who just show up to just vent, threaten lawsuits and post FUD threads are not just threatening TiVo - they're threatening me and my lifestyle.

That's just the way it is. Here, just have a little more kool aid and you'll understand... :D

$50.00 and I pay the shipping
I'll even send an extra $10.00 so lunch will be on me...

Here's hoping I dont' get lost in the clutter:

TiVo is a publicly-traded company. This means that their financials are readily available for your perusal. Before posting FUD, take the time to check out the facts yourself.

Scott - thanks for the horse's mouth data ;)

/me moves TiVo from middle to top of shopping list...

Yeah, I'm afraid it's true.

We told her and told her and told her, but she would not listen. If you run around partying all nite and act like a hoochie mama, don't be surprised if one day you "get in trouble".

We really didn't want this to get out, but I guess there's no hiding it now.

But, whacha gonna do, eh? Just take my advice for the future of your little tivo's:

Don't let your Tivo ride in cars with boys!!!

;)
