Places/Persons in the Los Angeles (90019) area that can upgrade my TiVo.

I own a standalone Phillips TiVo with the dual drive bays. I realize that the how-to on upgrading is supposed to allow *anybody* to upgrade their TiVos. However, when it comes to computers my knowledge is so lacking that I don't have the confidence to crack open my own TiVo and attempt this. Does anybody know of a place/person in Los Angeles (zip code 90019 or nearby) that can do this for me at an affordable price? Thanks.

You're obviously knowledgeable to make it here. Get your self a copy of Hinsdale's latest How Tos and read up on it. Upgrading a Tivo is not rocket science. You don't even have to know anything about Linux to do it, although it doesn't hurt either. You'll get much more satisfaction by doing it yourself than getting someone else to do it for you. If you're really hellbent on going that route, check out ebay or 9thTee for readymade drives that are already upgraded. They are supposed to be literally plug and play in that you open up the case and swap out the original drive with the new one and, voila! You've got an upgraded Tivo!

I'd like to echo captain_video's view that it's not beyond the grasp of someone who's not tech-savvy because I did it! It takes reading the upgrade guide several times, making use of any FAQ's available in the "Upgrade" forum along w/ some searches in that forum as questions arise. If you have some friend(s) that is(are) computer-literate, make use of them. I didn't get it the first time & I re-tried the weekend MFSTools was made available on these boards, but when my 14hr Philips SA showed 109hrs at Basic, THAT was a great feeling of accomplishment! Of course that was after I got a Green Screen of Death ;).

You could end up paying $400 for something you could do yourself for a little over a hundred, if you're willing to put a little time & effort into it. Of course, weaknees provides upgraded drives & the last I knew Hinsdale did upgrades as well. You got plenty of options.

Well, Brett...

You happen to be in some serious luck. Try http://www.weaknees.com. If they're not in 90019, they're pretty close, probably out on Wilshire or something like that.

Go to their web site and give them a call. Or better yet, just buy a pre-blessed drive from them and do it yourself. You do not need any computer experience, believe me.
