Goodby Arli$$

After 7 seasons, HBO has pulled the plug on Arli$$. TV critics are jumping for joy. I liked the show over the years, and this is from someone who doesn't watch sports.

I loved that show and will surely miss it. I do think 7 seasons was probably enough though. Not much new ground to cover.

:(

at least they're bound to put it on DVD

:( and    to HBO

I know the show was getting on some people's nerves, but having them leave Mind of the Married Man on while ending Arli$$ is just

It got terribly preachy in the last season or two. I preferred when it was all slapstick and "Hey! Look which professional athelete/manager/broadcaster/owner" showed up this week!"

Still, seven years is not bad for what was nominally a show created to cash-in-on "Jerry Maguire" thunder.

IMO, HBO hasn't been able to do funny since they cancelled Mr. Show. That was one of the funniest damn shows ever (and inspiration for my new sig). Since then, they've greenlighted/renewed Arli$$, Mind of the Married Man, Curb Your Enthusiasm and Sex and the City. All those shows combined have not made me laugh as much as one episode of Mr. Show.

I'm close to dropping HBO for this reason. Good old shows getting cancelled and good new shows dont seem to be appearing.

We are probably in the final seasons for Sex and the City, Sopranos and Oz. I watched "The Wire" for two episodes before deciding it was about 9th on my list of cop shows that were worth watching, "Mind of the Married Man" was pretty good for about half the first season and then turned silly. "Inside the NFL" just isnt as interesting to me this season as it was last season, perhaps because Cris Carter just isnt contributing much unique insight and i'm not a huge Bob "watch me monopolize the show" Costas fan.

After this year it may be time to drop this $13 a month bill. Wonder whats happened over there at HBO...they seemed to be able to do no wrong for years, now...?

I agree about Arli$$, MOTMM and SATC. But Curb Your Enthusiasm has to be the funniest show on television right now. I really enjoyed Mr. Show too, and now Curb Your Enthusiasm is the only "sitcom" I look forward to each week. If you fall in to the "Hated Seinfeld" camp I can see where you'd dislike it. Have you seen many episodes?

Hey, Homer's sisters in law, Pati and Selma, didn't like it. Obviously, it had to go.

Very disappointing to me. I loved the show, even when it wasn't so good. The Sopranos has taken a slide this year and last, and I don't care for MOTMM or SATC. If it wasn't for Curb Your Enthusiasm and SFU, I would cancel HBO outright. Seems like they've taken some good ideas and really killed them (reminds me of FOX).

I still watch them all. I loved Seinfeld, still one of my favorites to catch in repeats. However, CYE does nothing for me. Most of the stuff Larry does is just annoying, not funny. Every episode just seems like it's a "wait for something that happened in the first five minutes to come around and bite Larry in the ass". Plus the whole "real life" feel just ends up boring me.

All HBO dramas in my book have been excellent - Sopranos, SFU, The Corner, The Wire, Oz (ok, G String Divas sucked). Comedy, eh, they haven't been so great, going all the way back to First and Ten. Except of course for Mr Show, which they never gave a chance.

While I liked Arli$$ and will miss it. It was a distant third behind MOMM and Curb Your Enthusiasm. As someone else mentioned, Curb is probably the only comedy I look forward to every week. I laugh just listening to the music.

I was not suprised about it being cancelled, but I will miss it. I was a faithful watcher for many years.

I also agree Mr. Show is great!!! I have heard so much about CYE that I am gonna start watching this week.

For some reason, we never watched this until sometime last season when it got recorded as a suggestion, and then enjoyed the rest of the season. (See - suggestions do work!)

Does anyone know if HBO will be showing it in reruns?

I was gonna post something here about hating Arla$$, et.al., and how Mr. Show was the best thing since oxygen, but you beat me to it.

If you're interested in reading someone who really hated Arla$$, check out Bill Simmons, aka the Sports Guy, at ESPN.com's Page 2: Sports Guy archive

PS: yes, the spelling of Arla$$ is intentional.
