Buffy 7x06--Him (Spoilers)
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Started off a bit slow, but just got funnier and funnier. Slutty Dawn was great, but everybody's reaction to her was greater. And the attempt on the principal's life (and its foiling) was perfect!
This season just keeps on rocking...

I loved "I refuse to answer that question on the grounds that . . . it didn't fit." Also I totally agree with Anya in that "Dawn, Well Dawn's not good for anything." Totally outrageous.
PS Where did Buffy get that big bazooka?

It's left over from season 2. A very large demonic smurf had an accident.
Now dammit - someone forgot to tell the clouds that they're just not allowed to open up on Tuesdays between 8 and 9, as I suffered several small rain fade glitches, and one large one. Most didn't land on any dialog, except:
Anya: "I looked into him and I saw his soul"
Willow: "But he was walking away, so unless his soul is in his...
<glitch>
Anya: "..best friend and dearest darling"
Now, it's not hard to guess, but what exactly got dropped from this entertaining little conversation?
And at the very end:
Anya: "It was a spell, we were helpless. We weren't responsible for any..."
<black screen>
Xander: "7, eight times"
Buffy: "You hear that, not your fault"
So, anyone care to fill in the gaps?
Thanks,
-Ken
Edit: And while rewatching the end, did I see a commercial for an Adam Sandler cartoon movie??? Do we really need this?? Isn't Adam Sandler cartoonish enough in real life?

PARAPHRASING FROM MEMORY ONLY:
so unless his soul is in his ass then. AJ is my best friend and dearest lover. IT'S RJ!
We fell for a mystical ancient curse. Who hasn't made that mistake more than six or seven times.

Hey at least it was a complete blackout for you my local UPN affiliate is apparently run by the same people as he local CBS affiliate so at one point for 30 secs or a minute I had the sound from Buffy and the picture from JAG.

I was using the 30 second skip button a lot in the first half of the show. (if I wanted to see a soap opera I would watch daytime TV) The second half was hilarious though.
Xander: "Now are you sure you understand the plan"
Spike: "I think I got it yeah"
:D
Classic! lol

Xander "procured" it for her from the local Army base to use against the Judge in Innocence.
Ok, I admit that this episode started slow and in the beginning I was thinking "wasn't this done in The Wish". But it just got funnier and funnier as it went on. :D
("But you're gay and he's not a woman!"
"No, but I can make him one!")
I also loved the shot of the principal working while Buffy and Spike are wrestling in the background.
(Notice that Buffy was driving the "Geek Mobile".)
Good scene with Buffy and Dawn at the train tracks though.
Not a great episode but good and darn funny.... :D

Nope, but it was done in "Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered".
Lot of fun though. Contained quite a few priceless arguments between ladies.
But did anyone loose track of things during the Train scene? It wasn't quite apparent that there were actually two trains, one on the same track as Dawn, and one on the other track heading the other way. I kept wondering what the hell Buffy was going to do to save dawn from on top of the train that was going to hit her. I'm not sure all the angles were done quite right. I swear she was leaning over the wrong side of the train when she jumped off the correct side. But it might just have been me...

You're right, I'm mistaken.
The train shot could have been set up better but i guess we have to chalk this up to production deadlines....

Ken,
It wasn't just you. :( I also thought she was trying to outrun the speeding locomotive at first. And had to rewatch it.
On closer viewing, their closeup shots were messed up. All the closeups of Buffy on top of the train had her looking on the wrong side. The POV shots, and shot of her jumping were correct, but then as soon as she hits the ground, the train she was just on... isn't there anymore.
It was still a fun episode. :)

I personally thought this episode was pretty weak. It was tacky, it was silly... It was inconsistant in keeping when the girls swooned and didn't. And while it did get some good one-liners, most of the dialog was poor in my opinion.
Not one of my favorites.

I agree, I wasnt impressed with last nights episode either. Maybe they have given up with the fact that its likely this will be the final season so why build up interesting story lines as in prvious years.

I liked it.
For once we've got someone using a "love spell" without any malicious intentions.
RJ had no idea why every woman he met was fawning all over him. He just "went with the flow". :D Really funny.
I'd like to see him again in a few weeks when he can't figure out why he's not the ladies' man anymore.
I almost couldn't watch the parts where Dawn was talking to RJ for the first time. Too many bad memories of personal failed attempts. :D
Posted by: Rob Helmerichs
Yeah, the whole first ten minutes or so was almost painful to watch, partly because of the awkward pacing, but partly because of empathy for the humiliation the characters were going through.

I think that was a feed issue because it happened at the exact same time on mine (the dialogs you listed). Either that or that's some coincindental rain fade. Are you on UPN 20??

Although RJ supposedly didn't know why it was happening, it did seem to me that he was using the power maliciously. Some of the things he said or implied about people getting hurt seemed like more than idle wishing, especially the "wink wink, nudge nudge" about the QB having "fallen" down the stairs.

I enjoyed the episode. As others have said, lots of great one-liners. My wife (not a fan, she only watches the show occasionally) cracked up at the events outside the principal's office. We were both ROFL at Xander and Spike's "plan".
I wonder if Anya's activities will have repercussions? Most events on the show seem to.

The "Geek Mobile" which one is the geek mobile?
I thought that Buffy was driving her mom's old Jeep Cherokee. And clearly she still hasn't learned to drive :)
Remeber the last time she drove it.

I think that's what Buffy's mom called the Jeep in the Band Candy episode.
I could be wrong, pulling from memory.

I looked up the exact quote:
(I'm not tagging this as a spoiler because I figure that anyone who's seen Him will have seen Band Candy)
quote:
Joyce: (angry now) Screw you. I want candy!
Buffy: Mom!
Joyce: You wanna slay stuff, and *I'm* not allowed to do anything about
it. Well, this is what *I* wanna do, so get off my back!
Buffy: Mom, please, this is...
Giles: (reaches for Joyce) Oh, for God's sake. (pulls her away) Just
let your mum have the sodding candy. C'mon, Joyce...
Buffy holds her mother back and points at her black Jeep Cherokee.
Buffy: Mom, look at your car. Look at that dent the size of New
Brunswick. I did that.
Joyce can't believe her eyes. Behind her Giles takes a drag on his
cigarette.
Joyce: Oh, my God. (grossed out) What was I thinking when I bought the
*Geek* Machine?
Giles busts up laughing. Buffy can't believe her response. She gives up
and steps over to Giles.
BTW, did anyone else catch Spike's reaction when RJ's brother was talking about RJ writing poetry?

I thought it was especially interesting considering his "Bloody" past. You would think with his soul back he would be into that kind of stuff again :) Just more insight into this weird new meld of personalities that is Spike. So far, it's very good.

Are you on UPN 20??
Well @$&%. I guess I now have to set up one tivo to record from my local station, and one to record from one of the SuperStation UPN's. (Dish Network). They're all overcompressed, but all better than the UPN20 that Comcast was providing.
Did you have similar stutters in last weeks Enterprise if you watched it, about one minor glitch ever 10 min? I blamed that on the rain as well. Damn you UPN!
-Ken
Posted by: GDG76
Nope, don't watch Enterprise.... however, i do get a lot of stopples and audio drops on other stuff i record on UPN 20. If I had a backup i could record from on this station, I would... Still with DTivo it's 100 times better than OTA.

Oh, and what was that, a Charlie's Angels type cliffhanger before the last commercial break? (with the 4-way split screen, complete with 70's soundtrack) I thought that was hillarious!

My favorites from this episode:
Dawn: "I'll get you a new one."
Buffy: "I don't need a new cheerleading outfit."
Xander: "Let's not be hasty, now."
And in the bronze, when Xander shows how gross he feels for lusting after Dawn, and Willow mutters "Right there with ya buddy."

By far the best line in the show. I almost fell off the couch I was laughing so hard.

Ah, I'd forgotten that Joyce had refered to the Jeep that way. I was thinking that the 'geek mobile" name was somehow referencing Warren and his group from last season and couldn't figure it out.
Posted by: dcheesi
Heh, just remembered something, mostly for the South Park fans: When Dawn was arguing with Buffy in the club, she said something like "it's my life, I'll do what I want!" I couldn't help recalling Cartman in drag saying that same line on Jerry Springer! :D Considering that the girls got very Springer-esque in this episode, it kind of fits...
BTW, even though I knew that the girl on the dance floor would turn out to be Dawn, with that hairdo and outfit I could have sworn it was Faith! Weird, huh?

I had serious Faith flashbacks when Buffy and Dawn were talking after Dawn came off the dance floor. Even some of Dawn's dialog and mannerisms were very similar to Faith.

I can't decide between that one and:
Anya: "He's got a p*nis."
Willow: "I can work around that."

did anyone else notice that spike's reflection was apparent in the glass storefront window when he and xander were discussing "the plan"?
i'll also agree that the ep started painfull slow, but the dialog and jokes racheted up once all 4 girls were under the spell.
i'll furthermore agree that the whole train thing didn't make any sense. look, train tracks with no ties. now look, two trains! now one again!

Okay one more cool thing about this episode, the band playing at The Bronze was The Breeders!! I guess they play the theme song in concert. For the uninitiated the lead singer used to be in The Pixies.

What?! I just caught up to the series and now you're telling me this is probably the last season?! WAHHHHH!! I guess I should start saving for those DVD's...there were some great episodes.
Posted by: Rob Helmerichs
They've always treated each season as if it will be the last. And there is plenty interesting going on this year...as far as I'm concerned, this is the best Buffy since Year 3.
Posted by: DanT
And according to SMG in an interview I saw just last week, there's been no talk of this being the last season. That made me feel better, but at the same time, she's probably just saying that to make the new viewers feel better so they don't give up on the show. Whatever happens, UPN only signed up for two years, and this is the second year. New contracts will have to be signed, both by the network and the actors.
Posted by: Rob Helmerichs
All of the actors, save SMG and Anya, are under contract for at least another year. The rumor has been that SMG is adamant about not going on, although she now denies this; Emma Caulfield has flat-out said she won't be back.
Whedon himself has talked about this being the last season, but he's also talked about going on; I think at this point HE knows what he wants to do, but he has no intention of letting US know until he's ready.
The absence of SMG in no way presents an obstacle; there's Faith (who will be in the last five episodes of this year, and whose film career has sputtered enough to make a year or two in a high-visibility role with a fanatical fan-base something to consider seriously) and Dawn (who is obviously being prepped to replace her sister some day, right down to her own Scooby gang).
Whedon has also talked about the possibility of Buffy cast moving over to Angel, to shake things up there.
And I suppose their could be a giant crossover at the end of the season, with Apocalypse Guy from Angel and Morphie from Buffy teaming up; the casts of both shows could team up to defeat them, and in the process get tossed 500 years into the future, where they could join the crew of a junky mercenary spaceship...
And I believe Spike already speaks Chinese!
Posted by: TiVoLance
Buffy would never get hip to the western aspect. Can you imagine SMG in that fluffy dress from the last firefly? Didn't think so ;P

Hey, MG-- the spoiler in the thread title is for last week's episode only, not for upcoming episodes!

Sorry, but that's been widely reported, so I don't count it as a spoiler. It's not my fault you've been hiding in a cave! :D

Well, he didn't during the Boxer Rebellion.
If you recall, as he killed the Chinese Slayer, she said in Chinese:
"Please tell my mother I'm sorry."
To which Spike replied, "I'm sorry love, I don't speak Chinese."
Posted by: Rob Helmerichs
Ah, that slipped by me.
I had a vague memory of him living in China, so I jumped to the wrong conclusion.
