Telnet / FTP / Bash questions

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I just added a turbonet to my svr-2000 and it went without a hitch. Just stick it in, run a cable out of the box to my network, dial prefix to ,#401 and it worked.

Now I'm curious about setting up telnet, ftp, tivoweb so here are my questions:

Other than backup capability what do you get?

Is it worth hassle of opening my box, removing the drive, etc.? (my tivo is not easy to get at)

Is there any way to make these things work without opening the box?

Does Tivoweb provide a full featured web interface to manage recordings, settings?

Everything is working very well right now and I'm not sure that I want to muck it up.

thanks...

Hi,

I'm contemplating the net upgrade as well. Here's some of the resources that I ran across regarding Tivonet / TivoWeb.

http://tivo.lightn.org/

http://www.stevejenkins.com/tivo/newbie.html

One other thing that you have to consider is gaining external access to your Tivo. I have ATT Broadband. Getting the Tivo out is one thing, getting access to it from outside is another. You'll need a router with some firewall features and DHCP serving. I'm looking at this one: http://www.linksys.com/Products/pro...rid=23&prid=433

I'm running a HDR212 with 120 GB upgrade and version 3.0x. Not sure if I want to "fix" what isn't broken, but it sure would be cool to access the Tivo from outside, not to mention FTP.

comments and advice is appreciated,

Thanks for the links Tattoo -

I've got it all working now and I took the Dremel to the back of my Tivo and cut out a nice square hole for a female ethernet jack. Anyways I get the bash prompt and now I just need to figure out what to do with it. The thing I would most like to do is make a backup using ftp. Is this possible? Anyone?

-thanks

Hello,

Just got an amazing resource from Carlton Bale in another thread. This site covers a lot and has very detailed instructions.

http://tivohelp.swiki.net/6

Not sure what you mean by "backup". If you're trying to back up the Tivo OS, that may not be possible while it's running. If you're trying to backup shows, that's a different issue and i'm not sure if that's possible either. Poke around this forum long enough and I'm sure you can find a definite answer.

Quick question:

When you installed your tivonet card, which set of instructions/tools did you use?

I found two:

http://home.attbi.com/~nick.kelsey/...l_software.html

http://www.jsprod.net/tivo30script.htm

Both seem to be using different software scripts.

Thanks for the info!

I didn't use either - the turbonet drivers are already in 3.x Tivo. I just plugged it in, changed the dialing prefix and that was it.

I'll post some pictures later; I modified the back of my box and installed a female ethernet plug. Loks better, nicer for when you take the Tivo out for hacking.

I thought in order to get Telnet and FTP working there was some other software config involved. I figure, since I'll have the box open, I might as well pull the drive out and use one of those methods to configure telnet and FTP. I'd be interested in seeing how you dressed it up to look neat. I have some ideas to try.

Here's what did it for me..

http://www.stevejenkins.com/tivo/newbie.html

Particularly the sections about installing the tivoftpd daemon and Tivoweb. Once you have a bash prompt via telnet you'll want to install the Joe editor (which can be found all over the place) and then the ftp and web stuff. Once I had these installed I went to the section about having all this startup automatically (rc.sysinit) and made it permanent.

You use the http_get command to download everything your installing(which is explained via that link as well) if it isn't on your disk. If you have the drive out it might be easier to copy from cd or floppy.

good luck
