Turbonet Install. How easy?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Ok, I really want a Turbonet card from 9thtee. I will have no problems installing the card. But I know nothing about Linux. I have vers. 3.0 on my tivo, and I have read that the drivers are preinstalled in 3.0. So... It is as easy as pluging the card in, changing the dial number to ,#401 and plug the tivo into my cable modem?

I just finished installing mine today, I was in the same boat as you, didn't know much about linux.. It is as easy as plugging it in and setting the dial prefix if all you want to use it for is getting updates. if you want ftp/telnet access and tivoweb and the like then you have to do more. I only ran into one problem which was fixed by booting into linux with different options and besides that i followed the How-to guide step by step, it really wasn't too hard and took about an hour.

I have two DirecTiVos and am currently wiring my house for ethernet. The problems/questions I have about TurboNET are:

The Turbonet connection does not provide a pass-thru. If you only have one ethernet conenction you'll have to provide another or use a little hub. Also you will probably want to buy their $6.00 Turbonet Network option to get the ethernet out of your Tivo.

I just installed a Turbonet on my sony svr-2000 and it went without a hitch. Open box, install card, run ethernet out, close box, plug in connections, boot, set prefix, done. 15 minutes. I did have network connections behind the tv and a dhcp server already. I'm using Microsoft Win2k DHCP without issue.

Since I don't have a Directivo the ppv phone line issue isn't an issue for me. I do agree with you - there isn't any vast benefit using Turbonet. I am hoping the Tivo folks will increase the amount of listings you can download when using the internet...

Were I you I would wait for 3.0+ software before doing the Turbonet. I've read of too many problems caused by installing networking and then having it wiped out after the 3.x upgrade.

What I'd like to do have (and I don't think everyone is clear about what I'm talking about yet) is a connector like this:

http://www.controlsynergy.com.au/im...Cproduct505.pdf

This is a bit overkill, but I think you get the idea. It would look semi-finished instead of just a cable coming out the back of the DirecTiVo through some fan hole with a cable tie holding it down. I'd like the ethernet port on the back of my DirecTiVo to look nearly identical to the telephone jack that is already there. It's just a hole that you plug your cable into, not an external wire that's sort of dangling off the back.

Are there any recommendations outside of the industrial model above?

Thanks,

Brad

Oh.. that kind of pass thru. I like the model you posted. There has to be something from AMP or otherwise.

Has anyone found a product like the one I mentioned above to pass the ethernet connection through the back of the unit?

I checked out Amp's site (http://www.amp.com/) and wasn't able to find anything. It doesn't seem like a pass-though connector should be *that* hard to find.

Merry Christmas!

Maybe you could use one of these: http://www.levitonvoicedata.com/con...5connectors.asp
