Kim Delaney Leaving 'CSI Miami'
Nov 8, 10:26 AM (ET)

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Actress Kim Delaney is out of the new hit crime series "CSI: Miami" after just 10 episodes, CBS said.

The decision was a joint one involving the network and producers "upon recognizing that the character of Megan Donner was becoming less integral to the series," CBS said Thursday.

A call to Delaney's publicist was not immediately returned.

Delaney, 40, who played a DNA specialist in the "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" spinoff, has filmed her last episode. It will air Nov. 25, and her character's departure will be explained, CBS said.

No additional changes are planned for the show, which stars David Caruso and is the top-ranked new fall series. The original "CSI" is the No. 1 series overall.

Delaney, who won a best-supporting actress Emmy for her portrayal of police Detective Diane Russell on ABC's "NYPD Blue," was belatedly added to the "CSI" cast as production began in July, and after her ABC legal drama "Philly" was not renewed for a second season. Sela Ward ("Once and Again") had turned down the role.

One does have to wonder whay the 'smash hit', 'most watched' show of the season feels the need to change the lineup that got them there....

I've got this feeling she didn't get along with the ego-less Caruso.

Posted by: NatasNJ

I was going to post this a few hours ago. But I decided who cares. The show sucks. Now if it was David Caruso leaving I bet the audience numbers would jump!

Posted by: Philosofy

I want more Ainsly Hayes. It goes to show how good the show is that I refer to charecters as the people they played in a different show on a different network from last year. I get the heebie jeebies whenever there is a scene with the necrophiliac coronor.

YAAAAAAAAAAY!!! HUZZAH!

Sooo happy. I never liked her much. She just doesn't have the personality to be hard hitting in a drama. I always cringed whenever she acted tough on NYPD Blue.

Posted by: steelcurtain

Agreed. Now if they can dump David Caruso and give Emily Proctor (Ainsley) more air time, the show will be close to perfect!

I wish they would bring back Philly - I liked that show much more than this new CSI.

Ok, so most of us agree that CSI Miami isn't that great...almost no one seems to think its as good as CSI. My question is: what would make it better?

To me, the idea of a Miami based CSI, daytime oriented, with one crime per week has potential. Especially considering that the Caruso character is motivated by emotion more than the cold logic of Grissom.

So, what's missing here? I can't quite put my finger on it, but its definitely missing.

Stop making Caruso super-cop. Knows all, does all, always right.

The rest of cast shouldnt' exist just to play off of him as well.

A more diverse, healthier cast that displays teamwork. Right now it's the David Caruso show.

Posted by: dthmj

Just get rid of David Caruso... I don't think the guy can act.

Get rid of the creepy M.E. I cringe whenever she's on the screen... "Tell me baby, who did this to you..." {{shudder}}

The balistics lady has a decent personality, but the rest of the cast is just space filler... no personality, no reason to like them at all... I don't even know these character's names, and I haven't missed an episode yet.

And just who names their child Horatio? And even they did, wouldn't you use your middle name?

We should just start calling him Hore. :)

Kim wasn't supposed to be on the show in the first place, so it's a good thing that she's leaving.

David Caruso definitely needs not to right about everything all the time. We've got John Doe for that. ;)

More Bullet Girl. Less talking to corpses. Give the two guys in the back names already. (And stop putting them in red ST:NG uniforms! :D)

I like the CSI Miami (probably more than LV - I am new to both this year) but I did not like Delaney's character so I am happy she is leaving. Hopefully they will not replace her and just give the other characters more space.

I agree. I loved that show. Too bad it was cancelled. :(

I said it after only a few episodes and I will stand by it up until now. The thing this show seems to be lacking that the original has is better characters that are better written to show that they have personalities.

The Miami cast seems to just blur together as one big personality deprived character.

The show is also lacking the humorous touches of the original. There is no Greg character to lighten things up occasionally.

Basically i think it all boils down to writing. Good writing could solve most of those problems.

No, the real reason CSI Miami is worse is because everything has a huge red cast. It's as if Miami is on another planet near a red giant. Strange, didn't seem that me when I drove through....

Posted by: Turtleboy

I too agree that it's good to get rid of her, she never should have been there in the first place.

I think the biggest problem is that it really doesn't seem like it is in Miami. In CSI:TOS, the city of Las Vegas is almost a character in itself. But here, the writers obviously know nothing about Miami.

For starters, they need to make the show much more Hispanic. Keeping with the NYPD Blue cast-off theme, maybe they should bring in Jimmy Smitts (or at least Edward James Olmos ;) )

Posted by: grecorj

I'm glad they're getting rid of her; she's a terrible actress, and her character was just blah.

Posted by: c3po33

I hope this means more screen time for Emily Proctor.

Posted by: TivoDaddy

Tami, I also liked her in the Philly show better.

I really enjoyed the crossover show where the LV team went to Miami to finish solving the case. It could be because it had the characters of LV and minimized Caruso's on-air time. I also remember that they showed a lot of glitz, spice, rhythm, which captured Miami so well. If you notice in CSI:LV, they always play to Las Vegas' glitz. I think this is what's missing from the Miami spinoff.

I sure wouldn't mind if they convinced Sela Ward to join the group. :D

One more vote for Philly, any chance they'll resurect it?

Can't put my finger on why I rate 'Miami lower than CSI, but it's not even close... yet. I'll continue watching for a while.

And phil, can we just call him Ho instead?

Posted by: Spire

Here's yet another (futile) vote for Philly. Although Kim Delaney does nothing for me on the new CSI show, she wasn't bad on Philly. The one whom I really liked on Philly, though, was Rick Hoffman, and to a lesser extent, Tom Everett Scott. (Both of them, BTW, came from another show, Darren Star's short-lived guilty pleasure The $treet.)

Tom Everett Scott has found other work since Philly (ER, Do Over), but where is Rick Hoffman? Someone needs to put him on another show, ASAP.

Also liked Philly, and also liked the $treet. I feel bad for Rick Hoffman and Tom Everett Scott. They keep getting parts in good shows, only to see the shows canceled before they're really given a chance (especially The $treet). I wouln't want to be an actor on the next show they get cast in.

Stew

PS. While I do like Kim Delaney (although not as much as Dana Delaney, but that's a-whole-nother thread), I'm glad she's gone from Miami too

I think one of the big reasons for me why Miami isn't as good as Vegas is not the acting, but the actors.

when i see the show i think of Caruso and Delaney from NYPD blue, Emily Proctor from West Wing, the one Hispanic guy was from Roswell.

When you're thinking about former parts of actors from better shows, you know you're in trouble.

And CSI:Vegas everybody is pretty much a fresh face, you believe in them more. I mean I know Marg from China Beach, and Petersen from Manhunter, but that's about it, and those were a while ago.

Everything you think of when you think of Vegas has been in CSI..

From just filming what sets Miami apart from any other big city with beaches? Swamps?

I was thinking about the differences while watching the portion of CSI I got last night.

I care about every character on CSI. Not sure how that came about, I really only started watching the series toward the end of summer re-runs, so it's not like I've been following from the beginning. But in that short time, there's been something special about every character.

I've seen all the Miami episodes, and have yet to develop anything for any of them. There's a glimpse when we see the autopsy lady (sorry, forget her names) reading to her kids at the end of the show, what two episodes ago? But other than that, no insight to anyone else. Should have happened by now.

As for KD leaving, I like her, and would check out anything new she shows up in, but I don't think she will be missed here. I wonder what is motivating her exit. Anyone hear who's choice it is? Is she bailing on a failing show, actor differences, money problems due to low ratings & the need to cut back, or just being written out?

CSI Miami is a poor imitation. Caruso is terrible, the coroner with the talking to the corpses bit is a stupidly concieved character. It's as if a bunch of Hollywood execs had a 3 martini lunch, came up with the character ideas and made it so. Hope it's cancelled soon.

Rcrew,

I was thinking the same thing last night as I watched this week's CSI episode. I have watched from the beginning and I feel I know who these people are. I care about them and they care about each other. I also noticed the minor characters (the fingerprint tech, the MEs, audio tech, etc.) all have personalities. They even use Las Vegas is a character.

CSI:Miami is sterile in comparison. It is as if they are in a vacuum and they do not personally interact with each other or anyone outside their little group. I continue to watch in the hope it will improve over time, but I do not particularly care about these people.

I never liked Kim Delaney and I am glad she is gone. She never belonged on CSI:Miami.

I think most of us can all agree on three basic things:

1. Caruso needs to go.
2. Delaney needs to go.
3. The show would be a lot better if it was just bullet girl going from crime scene to crime scene in a bikini.

My problem with Delaney is she's too..... equivocal. The character could be great, and the dichotomy of two equal CSIs jockeying for the position as top dog could be interesting, but the way the character is written makes that virtually impossible.

And also the other guy (Tim something...Spiedle?) was of course Slater from Dazed and Confused! :)

Jorja Fox was a regular on ER for 2 or 3 seasons. When I started watching CSI, she was the only one I recognized.

After ER, she also did a stint on the West Wing as Zoe's secret service handler.

Its hell getting old. I thought Jorja came over from The Practice (secretary), and did some searching just now and I'm wrong. Probably recognized her from ER which I watch.

Well, according to the news reports about Delaney leaving, they aren't going to replace her character. Which is a good thing.

So how is she going to leave the show? Will they be investigating her crime scene? :D
