i have a 120GB barracuda V i wanna swap w/ the old LCT40GB. (amazing how quiet the barracuda is compared to the LCT)
i jumped the Original drive to master and New HD is jumped to slave.
the Original HD is in my PC at the end of the IDE cable the New HD is in the middle .
My Windows HD's are disconnected, i have two CD-rom still connected in PC.
MfrsTools 2.0 BootCD is in the CD-rom.
Powered up... nothing. not even a BIOS screen or ability to get to CMOS. what now?
please help!

Start working backwards. take the drives off the cables and power up. If that doesn't work, check to see that you didn't accidentally pull a card loose. Not even getting to a BIOS screen indicates to me some kind of short.

um ya... i feel uh, stupid.
i have a new radeon card, and the vga port doesn't allow me to screw the plug in... it came loose...
sorry. but i am sure i will need more help. so stay tuned spider fans!

Leave your main Windows drive as the primary master (make sure it's not an NTFS drive). Set your Tivo B drive as primary slave. Set the Tivo A drive as secondary master. Connect a CD-ROM as secondary slave. You should not have more than one CD-ROM connected when booting up in Linux. Having more than one connected can cause confusion and unnecessary problems. Make a backup of your original Tivo A drive before you do anything or you may regret it later (this is why you need your Windows drive connected). Read Hinsdale's How To for MFS Tools 2.0 and you'll find step-by-step procedures for everything you want to do.

(using step 7 opt 3)
ok, from the linux /#
i typed: dd_ if=/dev/hdc_ of=/dev/hdb_ bs=1024k
nothing happened. the cursor went to the line below and blinks. is it duplicating? it doesn't sound like it.
what now?

anyone in SF? i will buy them lunch if they come over and help me... :)
i hate linux. i just got done upgrading an HP Audio Server... that was a pain too. GUI was developed for a reason.
sorry just venting

rebooted. did "/#dd_ if=/dev/hdc_ of=/dev/hdb_ bs=1024k" again. same result.
i think it is not recognizing any HD's... i can't tell w/ all the linux mumbo jumbo before the linux prompt.

ok. there is a small green indicator light oin the bottom of my Original LCT HD. it is randomly flashing.
does that indicate that it is doing what the above cmd was supposed to do? the only thing on the screen is a blinking cursor.

dd is rather uncommunicative - the drive access light (there should be one on the front of the PC as well as the one on the drive itself is the only real feedback.
Just wait til the light goes out and your disk will be copied - this might take up to eight hours!

You aren't using underscores in the command are you?
Those should be spaces.
Are you sure of all your partition locations, master slave, etc?
Posted by: section8
nope. i didn't use "_"
i do have a question...
so i am currently waiting for "dd.." processes to finish (cross your fingers, i hope its working)
can someone explain what i do w/ MFS Tools 2.0? does it come into play later? as i expand the new drive from the original 40gb?

You can use MFS Tools 2.0's mfsadd function to expand your TiVo image into the unused space on the larger drive.
As long as the green light is flickering, dd is busy.

its DONE! yippee!
120Gb=106hrs? is that right? i just wanna make sure it isn't screwed up.
I chose to use :
UPGRADE CONFIGURATION #2:_
From:_ Any Single or Dual Drive TiVo
to expand the HD.
And it SAVED my recordings! i was under the impression it was NOT supposed to... oh well Bonus!
I also installed a new Vantec Stealth fan. with taht and the Barracuda V, it is easily a 75% reduction in noise factor! that was my true goal. The HD noise was driving me bonkers.

dd clones the whole drive - it's a very simple tool that has no understanding of the data it's copying. If you wanted to copy without taking the recordings (/much/ faster ~ 1/2 hour) just do an MFS Tools backup/restore.
106 Hours sounds right for a DTiVo, but you haven't mentioned what sort of TiVo you've got.
