Mfs Tools or dd command?

I want up upgrade my TiVo from two 80 gig drives to two 120 gig drives. Well I'd like to upgrade to larger drives, but I don't want to break on a new software release ;).

Anyhow, what is the definitive fastest/safest way to copy an A and B drive to a new larger drive? Some say use Mfs Tools, and some say just use a dd command. BTW, I want to keep all my recordings as well, not just my settings. Also, could you please list the best command with parameters to use? Again, after reading a lot, I'm not sure of blocksize, swap size, etc. Also, there was some mention of creating a larger swap file space since this will be a larger setup. How is this done?

Thanks,
Ron

Firstly, count the partitions on your A drive (boot a byteswapping TiVo boot disk - anything other than MFS Tools 2.0. If you already have 15 partitions on the A drive you can't upgrade it and keep your recordings. Not changing the A drive rules out swap file changes too.

You should be able to dd your B drive on to a new one without incident. Use a non-byteswapping disk (MFS Tools 2.0 would be fine) and check your DMA settings before you start.

The procedure for manually creating a larger swap file is in the Fixes thread, although I don't think you'll be able to expand your A drive, so it's not relevant.

You should take note of the 'rescue' procedure, also in the Fixes thread, just in case you ever need it.
