Series Two Power Question

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Being an idiot I removed the original power cable which was attached to the power supply. I cut the original cable up thinking that I needed to make a female into two male connector in order to power my A&B drives. In the process of cutting the wire I noticed that it had a metal shield around the wire. Is this used to protect from heat? I jerry rigged the power so I now have power to both drives.

My question is what is the metal sleeve that went over the wires do?

Thx

It took me a couple of re-readings to figure out that you're talking about the hard drive power cable inside your Tivo, not the 120 volt external power cable!

This sleeve is only about half an inch to an inch long, right? It doesn't run the entire length of the wire as a "shield" would, right?

If that's right, the sleeve is a ferrite core that helps prevent the hard drive's power cable from radiating noise into the circuits on the nearby motherboard, or out through the case and into the antennas of the folks who test the box for compliance with the FCC standards for low electrical noise emissions.
