trouble expanding to 120gb

We are in the middle of trying to expand our tivo with a 120gb hard drive. We want to do this and keep our programs. We ran into a problem. We did the dd and it went fine. Installed it in the tivo and tivo booted fine. We than did the mfsadd -x command and it said
current estimated stand alone size 57 hrs
nothing to add!
Is this one of those too many partition problems?
We started with a 30gb a and 30 gb b
dd'ed the b to the 120gb drive

What command line did you type for mfsadd?
Posted by: cherylannbaker
the whole command I entered was
mfsadd -x /dev/hdc /dev/hdd
the a drive was connected to the secondary master
the b drvie was connected to the secondary slave

That looks correct.
Is this the first upgrade for this TiVo?

No it is not the 1st upgrade. Here are the partion maps for the drives if this helps:

You anticipated my next question :)
I think you're going to have to ask Tiger about this. You have enough space in the partition tables on both drives to expand, but you may have hit another limit. Tiger said you can only have six MFS partitions (I think you currently have four), but perhaps it's more complex than that.

I sent Tiger a PM, if there are any other ideas you might have I'd appreciate the help.
Thanks!

I ran into the same problem last night. I was upgrading my T60 from 30+80 to 120+80. The new A drive would not expand to its full capacity. It was the second upgrade first going from 30+15. I ended up restoring the backup image and expanding. I lost all of my recordings though. :(

here is the output from mfsinfo if that helps
/# mfsinfo /dev/hdc /dev/hdd
MFS volume set for /dev/hdc and /dev/hdd
The MFS volume set contains 8 partitions
/dev/hdc10
MFS Partition Size: 512MiB
/dev/hdc11
MFS Partition Size: 11403MiB
/dev/hdc12
MFS Partition Size: 512MiB
/dev/hdc13
MFS Parition Size: 15746MiB
/dev/hdd2
MFS Partition Size: 4MiB
/dev/hdd3
MFS Partition Size: 14320MiB
/dev/hdd4
MFS Partition Size: 0MiB
/dev/hdd5
MFS Partition Size: 14984MiB
Total MFS volume size: 57482MiB
Estimated hours in a standalone TiVo: 57
This MFS volume may be expanded 2 more times
I'm curious as to why partition /dev/hdd4 reports a size of 0MiB?

I'm currently experiencing similar problems and was wondering if there was a solution to this.
Original HDR31202: 30GB + 60GB (TiVoMad)
Now trying to replace the 30GB (A drive) with 120GB ==> 120GB + 60GB using MFSTools 2.0.
hda: CDRW
hdb: 60GB (TiVo B)
hdc: 120GB (new to be A)
hdd: 30GB (original A)
When I try mfsadd:
mfsadd -x /dev/hdc /dev/hdb
I get:
Current estimated standalone size: 91 hours
Nothing to add!
I booted using the "magic incantation" and typed: mfsinfo /dev/hdc /dev/hdb
and got:
The MFS volume set contains 4 partitions
/dev/hdc10
MFS Parition Size: 512MiB
/dev/hdc11
MFS Partition Size 27661MiB
/dev/hdb2
MFS Partition Size: 4MiB
/dev/hdb3
MFS Partition Size: 57237MiB
Total MFS volume size: 85415MiB
Estimated hours in a standalone TiVo: 91
This MFS volume may be expanded 4 more times
Note that booting "regular", that is, just <ENTER> at boot, gives me the following errors for the drives:
hdb:Signature 1492, be16 Signature 9214
03:40 Block 0 has signature 9214 rather than 1492
unknown partition table
hdc:Signature 1492, be16 Signature 9214
16:40 Block 0 has signature 9214 rather than 1492
unknown partition table
hdd:Signature 1492, be16 Signature 9214
16:40 Block 0 has signature 9214 rather than 1492
unknown partition table
All drive sizes are reported correctly, that is, 120GB=122942MB, 60GB=60022MB, 30GB=30020.

Hi Everyone!
Guess what? I just ran into the same problem!
I have two T60s, and was very pleased with the first upgrade on my first TiVo, where I added 2-120 GB Samsungs, that I decided to do the same with my second one! With the first TiVo I upgraded directly from a two drive TiVo to two fresh, brand new drives using Hinsdale's Upgrade configuration #5. I followed all instructions exactly to the letter, and about 20 hours later, was all done without any problems (reporting a whoopping 225 hours on setup screen!) . On my second TiVo I was upgrading from a previous upgrade (Drive a - 45 GB Maxtor, Drive b - 120 Samsung), to only replacing the Drive a with a 120 Samsung, using Hinsdale's Upgrade Configuration #4 (in order to preserve recording).... ran Linux dd and 20 -some hours later, when complete ran the mfsadd -x /dev/hdc /dev/hdb command with the same results as everyone else.... Sure would love to get same results as in first upgrade!

...Just gaved up trying. Just ran a restore + expand over the 2 120's I was having trouble expanding and everything is okay now. However, noted an interesting fact.... I only lost a few of my existing recordings! I thought I was supposed to loose everything, except my current settings? A bit confused, but happy with results :D

Well, I didn't solve the problem, but was able to upgrade my TiVo a different way.
I combined the 30GB and 60GB to the 120GB to make a new A drive,
mfsbackup -Tao - /dev/hdd /dev/hdb | mfsrestore -s 127 -xzpi - /dev/hdc
then added the 60GB back as a "new" B drive.
mfsadd -x /dev/hdc /dev/hdb
It took a little longer, but now my TiVo is a 120GB+60GB, with an expanded swap (I think) too!

Optics,
Great to hear you were able to work around and solve your problem! I am also assuming that by including the -s 127 parameter with restore, provides the larger swap file. So far with my upgrade, the performance has been a tiny bit slower than before the update but it really does not bother me. I too, hope I have the larger swap file... from what I have read so far, this will become critical if you the system needs to repair itself with the "GSOD" Utility... I am keeping my fingers crossed!
