Angel Better than Buffy?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: retrodog

So is it just me or has Buffy seen better days? I still watch it but Angel is a lot more interesting. Is Buffy supposed to get any better or is this it?

Posted by: TiVoLance

I think this season of Buffy is putting out some GREAT episodes. That said I like Angel too. Good Times :P

Posted by: Rob Helmerichs

I'm not sure Buffy HAS seen better days...it's back in the form it was during yeas 2 & 3, as far as I'm concerned.

But Angel is just as good!

Posted by: unoriginal

If you think of them as separate show, than right now Angel is better. If you are like me and think of them as one show that airs on different channels at different time than there isn't even a comparison.

Posted by: sschwart

Both shows are very good... And this year Buffy's come back very strong. Both shows have a very skilled cast, capable of doing whatever Joss Whedon throws at them, but I think that more effort and thought is put into the writing of Angel's story, which gives in an edge.

Angel's writing and campier style just isn't for me, although I did like Sun 10th eppie.

They are still both pretty good programs, I don't like the direction either of them went the last couple of years, but I'm not the one making the decisions.

the whole cordelia as goddess plotline makes me heave.

How close is Angel to hitting that magical 100-episode mark where they begin syndication?

If that's the rule, then he should hit it at the 12th episode of the next season.

Posted by: Rob Helmerichs

It used to be a rule, although with the much wider range of syndication options, it doesn't matter so much any more (shows that only had a few episodes end up on cable networks now).

For traditional, "strip" syndication (where it airs five times a week), they like having around 100 episodes, so it won't start repeating too soon. I suspect what they'll do with Angel is pretty much what they did with Buffy...have strip syndication on FX (which isn't technically syndication; do they have a name for that?), and weekly reruns in true syndication on local channels. Probably after five seasons (i.e., after the current one ends, with enough time for the contracted reruns on WB). Just a guess, though.

I thought that was repurposing?

Posted by: Rob Helmerichs

Repurposing is showing this week's episode on another network a few days later. Syndication is selling reruns of a show in season blocks to various local markets. But the new practice we see on Sci-Fi, Bravo, USA, etc., of having in effect syndicated shows without a syndicate seems to be called syndication as well. I suspect the programming folks have a word for that, to distinguish it from true syndication...or maybe they just don't know what a syndicate is!

In case anyone hadn't heard, Angel's first season will be out on DVD in February.

I've only seen a handful of episodes of Angel, but from what I've seen it's been very good. They just seem too different to really try and compare.

And, not surprisingly, seasons 1 and 2 are both already out in the UK.

Umm, Angel is currently in its 4th season.

And where was the announcement that Angel Season 1 would be out on DVD in the U.S. in February? That's the first I've heard of it, but I hope it's true.

Oops.

www.thefutoncritic.com it's (along with NYPD Blue) the current headline.

I guess I'm a little biased. I've watched periodic episodes of Buffy ever since it started but have missed blocks of them due to dumb dialogue and meaningless periods.

I've missed very few episodes of Angel. I guess cause I haven't really found myself just thinking it sucked from time to time. But in all fairness, maybe I've been a little more faithful due to it starting later and having a TiVo for its life span (more or less).

But hey, what do I know. I still prefer Cheers over Frazier. Go figure. ;)

I like Buffy but sometimes it just seems a little boring/dumb. <shrug>

Um did you see early Angel? I was Baaaadddd. The last two seasons have made it watchable again.

Posted by: Freki

The first season of Angel had a few good episodes, notably the ones with Faith and the season finale. The first half of the season was mostly Angel saves the girl from the stalker of the week, though. Pretty bad.

uhm, hello?
What about In the Dark? The Bachelor Party? I Will Remember You? Hero?
Those were all standout episodes and they were in the first nine.

I don't watch Angel, but I would have to think it is better than season 5 and what I have seen of season 6 (I'm on ep 4). Both have been horrible. SMG isn't exactly a great actress, but she has been awful even by SMG standards. The main reasons I have kept watching are Spike and Anya. Spike is the best character on the show.
My preference for the seasons are:
2
3
4
1
5

Posted by: zaknafein

I agree that Spike and Anya are the strongest characters in the show, at least around season 5. James Marsters is simply brilliant. He has lots of great dialog, and delivers it perfectly on an astoundingly consistent basis.

I would disagree that season 5 is awful though. (Well, at least the first 10 eps I've seen.) I've been enjoying it quite a bit more than season 4. (which I didn't necessarily hate)

I would say 3-2-6, in rapid succession, and on different days, deopending on mood, I would rank them differently, then 1 and 5, then a gap, then 4.

3 and 2 are some of the best television ever made, period. 6 has the same feel so far, but I'll have to wait until the season's over to see if it has the same kind of overall impact.

I'm not sure what you mean about 6; there hasn't been a less than great episode yet, and SMG has regained some of the energy she lost over the past couple of years. Plus Dawn is finally coming into her own...

I do believe you are referring to season SEVEN. Six was last year.

You're absolutely right. I had forgotten about Season 6. :D

OK, make that 3-2-7, followed by 1 and 5, then a gap, then 6, then a gap, then 4.

I thought the guy was talking about the current season...

(I considered going back and editing my previous post, but I think this is a blunder for the ages!)

So you are saying the season with
Spoiler Alert! (highlight to read)
Glory
was bad? How can you say that?
Spoiler Alert! (highlight to read)
The Body
should have been nominated for an Emmy it was so good and
Spoiler Alert! (highlight to read)
The Gift
with The Master of Ceremonies himself (Joel Grey - http://us.imdb.com/Name?Grey,%20Joel ) was also very good.

"...and the glorified bricklayer picks up a spare!"

And if you want to talk about season 4 what about
Spoiler Alert! (highlight to read)
Hush
?

My least favorite season was season 6. My favorite season was 2. They have all been good overall, though.

As for Angel, I barely remember the first season.

Yup, hated season 5 with Glory. Every episode seemed the same. Buffy fights Glory. Glory beats up Buffy. Buffy whines about how she gave Glory everything she had and it didn't even phase her. The arse kissing dialogue of Glory's minions got REAL old REAL fast. There was no dynamic aspect to Buffy's personality all season. She looked drugged.

Spoiler Alert! (highlight to read)

I didn't think season 4 was bad at all. Then again, I had heard it was awful and went in expecting the worst. There were only 3-4 episodes I didn't like (Beer Bad being the worst). Hush was incredible. Let me say that again, Hush was incredible. The first 20 minutes or so didn't impress me but by the end my jaw was on the floor. That was quite possibly my favorite hour of television ever.

Posted by: Rob Helmerichs

Hush was a good episode. Season 4 was not a good season. Even bad seasons of Buffy have had very good episodes.

Glory was Season 5. You'll notice I have that up near the top.
