Alias 11/10

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I've noticed that Alias, like Star Trek, has a habit of running a long teaser before the opening credits. But tonight Alias went overboard. There was:

1. The opening exposition, explaining the characters.
2. A review of last week's action.
3. A 10-minute (!) teaser.

Then the credits -- 13 minutes into the show! (acc. to my TiVo).

That seems like a record.

No...Alias doesn't have a teaser; it always has the opening credits after the first segment.

Most shows: Teaser, credits, commercials, first segment, commercials.

Alias: First segment, commercials.

Never the less, I thought it was a good episode.

I've made it a habit not to watch the previews.

I will say I predicted the ending scene about half way through, you know where. But if they gave anything up in the previews, I won't see that until next week.

mine was not recorded - TiVo thought it was a repeat!!!!

ARrgg!

My Alias got preempted for a weather man talking about the tornado 20 miles away from me for over an hour.. Annoying.

I see what you mean. But it's still unusual, isn't it, for a show to do its first segment before its credits? I can't think of any other show, other than Star Trek and its offspring, that does that.

Star Trek doesn't do that...they've always used the traditional way. (Although their teasers tend to be very short.)

But you're right, it's very unusual. There are some shows that go the other way, having the opening credits before any story shows up. And I noticed Robbery Homicide last week had NO opening credits; they went straight into the first segment, with the credits overlain.

Alias is just different. I suspect it might be an attempt to keep the mile-a-minute thing going; by the time you get to the first commercial, a LOT has happened, and that tends to make an impression.

I don't know MG. I remember turning to my GF last night and saying something like "this is really overkill, why can't they just get the story going".

Do we agree it was longer than usual?

I wonder if they made a change to help bring folks who missed last weeks episode up to date?

Since this will likely become the defacto 11/10 Alias thread, anyone want to talk about the ending?

Spoiler Alert! (highlight to read)
Do you think Vaugn has the disease? Is he going to die? Why didn't they catch it in the test? Also, do we know this isn't an airborn virus? If it is, wasn't it ignorant to put Sidney and Vaugn together during testing? The only thing that gave us was the answer to the previous teaser showing them waking up in close proximity... He and Sid have been getting close. What's it going to do to her if she looses another loved one?

And as for the empty coffin, so what? At the high level of play Sloan is involved in, surely anyone trying to fake him out would have already removed the body themselves.

Only a little. IIRC, at least one of the previous opening sequences ran 8-9 minutes, and this one was ~11. I really like the idea of getting into the show at full speed.

Well, here's my take.

Spoiler Alert! (highlight to read)
Yes, Vaughn has the disease. Not killing off Sidney's mom leads me to believe that she will play a major part in keeping him alive (finding the antidote, etc.). I don't think that the virus was airborne, as from what they've indicated so far, Vaughn got it due to its presence in the water, and Jack's concern was for Sid coming in contact with the blood of the victim at the hospital. So unless Sid came in contact with Vaughn's blood, or they start talking about it as communicable by air, I think Sid's safe for now.

I've thought all along that Jack is the one doing this to Sloan. That's he's trying to get Sloan unhinged as part of the takedown of SD-6. Of course, Sloan's comment about the Alliance dealing with all of them as 'rogue' agents might end up changing Jack's plans -- assuming that he is the one behind this.

The real key to this episode, IMO, was Sidney's lie to the Senator. That's going to cost her at some point. Jack's going to end up framing someone so Sid doesn't get exposed, or someone's going to get hurt. But it won't end well.

And Will's off-the-books job for Vaughn looks to get him back in hot water...if Vaughn gets seriously ill, and someone ends up auditing his accounts...

You all know about those 95% effective IR blasters..... This episode suffered the 5% :( . First mistake from Tivo in a long time, and on my favorite show that is not repurposed!!!!!! Seriously am considering going to direct tv to avoid the little blasters.

I've downloaded a copy of last night's alias since TiVo failed to get it for me.

If anyone needs a copy, pm me and I can make it available via ftp

(or you can always get it yourself at alt.binaries.multimedia.alias)

When we're closed-captioning "Alias," since we conveniently have the time code right on screen, we always remark about what time the opening credits finally show up. It's gotten to the point that if another show has an unusually long teaser, we'll say, "What is this, 'Alias'?"

Since the producers of "Alias" have never seen fit to send a script to their closed captioners, I don't know whether they officially consider the first segment "the teaser" or "Act I." I will point out that the superimposed guest star/producer/writer/director credits, which run during Act I of every other show I've ever closed-captioned, run during the second segment of "Alias," so my guess is that the folks at "Alias" do consider the first segment "the teaser."

I think Jack is the one messing with Sloane too!

What I want to know is...
Spoiler Alert! (highlight to read)
How, pray tell, does the CIA intend to send Jack to jail, since his cover with SD-6 is so deep? "Oh, by the way, Sloane, don't mind me, I'll be popping off for 7-10 years... just taking a really long vacation..." Not to mention, that would pretty much screw Sidney's cover in SD-6 as well.

Yeah I thought about that as well.

Not only did I think about it,
Spoiler Alert! (highlight to read)
sending Jack to jail
, I turned to my GF and asked her right then how in the heck are they going to explain it to SD-6?

I see it as a writing flaw, but will invoke suspension of disbelief so I can continue to enjoy the series.
