watch boomtown

i dont see how this show isnt in the top 25 in ratings, it is a great show, why don't more people watch it? it's better than alias. so watch it.

Posted by: T-Veaux

I saw the first episode. It appeared to be a decent show with a strong cast (overlooking the New Kid on the Block) but the story just wasn't appealing enough to sit through while watching it over and over again between the various points of view. If the storylines kept strong I'd start recording it again, but currently TiVo records other things in its place.

Posted by: DanT

They've drifted a little bit from the pilot, and it's for the better. Not so much overlap between points-of-view as in that first episode. It's now closer to a conventional narrarative storyline, but still from multiple unique perspectives. This show is actually growing on me.

Posted by: avaloncourt

We're liking the show very much.

Posted by: T-Veaux

I'll have to give it another day in court then.

Posted by: ClutchBrake

Best new show of the season.

Posted by: Knative

Much less overlap than the pilot. If there wasn't I wouldn't still be watching it. One of the best new shows for the season.

Posted by: pcgrrll

This type of show isn't usually to high on my list, but I have to admit that I'm really enjoying watching. It's also one of the few shows my boyfriend and I can watch together.

Posted by: zaknafein

I've got a SP for it to catch the eps, but have trouble getting motivated to watch it. Can someone give me a synopsis?

Posted by: Philosofy

I'm afriad to get hooked on anothe show. I'm currently behind in my episodes of Angel, Buffy, and 24. We intentionally let all the Law & Order shows pile up for when repeats start. I don't have time for another show. There's a lot of quality for my TiVo to grab out there.

Posted by: bobjohnson

My second favorite show behind The Shield.

Posted by: dwells

Not as good as Alias, but agreed, Boomtown is one of the best,
and most unique shows on television. Anyone who hasn't seen it
thinking its just another cop/crime show should give it a try......

I was so so about the series after the first episode. But I think it is coming into it's own and I really am enjoying it.

Posted by: fmowry

Watched the first one, got the rest ready for repeat season like Philosofy. Along with Hack and one other new cop show whose name escapes me now. The one with Tom Sizemore.

Boomtown is the best show of the new season. Well acted. Good characters and always an interesting plot twist.

Posted by: grecorj

That "New Kid on the Block" is Donnie Wahlberg. And he and Mykelti Williamson are the 2 reasons you want to watch this show.

The creator of the show, Graham Yost, wrote the show with Wahlberg in mind for that role. They worked together on Band of Brothers for HBO, along with Neal McDonough (the DA on Boomtown).

I'm starting to look forward to Boomtown the way I used to look forward to Homicide.

I just hope they don't always have a plot twist, or else I'll start looking for them, and usually see them coming. Although the one this week I saw coming anyway, but then thought I was wrong because it looked like the show was over. Guess I should have checked the progress bar. :)

I really like this show too. It's a unique mix of "crime drama" with just "drama." It seems to have more character development than other crime shows.

The opening always gets me though- they run the opening scene, then the opening title bit, and then right back into the show. I always whack the 30-second skip button and end up in the middle of the show, not the commericals. The first break comes about 15 minutes into the show.

Anyone see the editorial where the reviewer says "Don't watch Boomtown without TiVo?" She basically complained that the commericals ruined the flow and really worsened the experience.

Posted by: holee

Boomtown is a great show. It started off well and has gotten better. Especially since the episodes are now less about seeing the same 10 minutes from different POVs, but just seeing different characters' activities and how they tie in together.

Kind of like how Pulp Fiction or similar movies are set up.

It's easily the best new drama of the season. Kicks hinies out of CSI: David Caruso. Better than Hack, Without a Trace, Robbery Homicide, etc.

If you've only see the first episode and haven't seen any others since, try watching another episode and see if you like it any better. If you haven't seen it at all.....WHAT ARE YOU DOING WRONG?!?! Make an SP for it. Andale.

That's my exact problem. I watch 3 Law and Order's and really don't want to invest in another crime drama show. Maybe I'll catch them in during reruns.

Posted by: bobjohnson

Hardly the same thing. If you haven't seen it already, at least do yourself the courtesy of watching it once and finding out for yourself. I would gladly give up any or all of the L&Os for Boomtown.

Posted by: Rob Helmerichs

There isn't much I wouldn't give up for Boomtown...

Posted by: mitchrc

I thought the episode about the 60s radical was excellent, but in general the show has gone downhill for me since the pilot. The episode where the cop defended the Russian mom and daughter against the mob was AWFUL! Last weeks episode was slightly better. It seems to me if they abandon the novel timeline technique it will be just another cop and robbers show.

Posted by: jayntguru

So, ugh, what's the show about? I see that it is crime/drama, has a twist in most episodes, and shows you different perspectives like Pul Fiction. But what's the premise?

Posted by: Rob Helmerichs

In a sense, it's kind of like an expanded Law & Order, with different characters representing different aspects of law enforcement (beat cops, detectives, DAs, paramedics, a reporter). So the different perspectives are not just different characters' take on things, but shown from genuinely different points of view. And so far, they have done a VERY cunning job of exploiting the differences among the characters' perspectives to generate suspense and create interesting twists.

Posted by: innocentfreak

This is another surprise hit for me and rarely stays on my now playing list for more than a day.

Posted by: shaunrose

Definitely my favorite new show of the season. It's replaced the Practice in my priority list.

Posted by: grecorj

USA Today TV critic Robert Bianco has nothing but nice things to say about Boomtown in his column today.

Posted by: smak

Yah, i think it's gotten better. When they did that sporting goods robbery, when they did the POV of the robber, they showed some of his history with his brother etc...

I think the different perspective thing is enough of a difference from the other cop shows to watch Boomtown as a good show, not just another cop show.

You could have said the same thing about The Shield, but no way would I not watch it, just because i record the 3 L&O's.

I think most cop shows have enough differences to reccommend then based on the quality...

I like the differences especially in the timelines

BOOMTOWN: Usually only a few hours of real time per show.
NYPD BLUE : Usually one whole day
L&O'S: Usually multiple days, or even weeks depending on the trial!

Posted by: bobjohnson

I'd have to say I think Boomtown is leaps and bounds better than the original Law & Order. The OG L&O is past it's prime. For 10 years, virtually every episode has started with 2 random people with no connection to the plot stumbling across a dead body, one of them saying "Squigy, quick, call the cops!" The other saying "Why?" and then gasping once he sees the body. That and the 'ripped from the headlines' is code for 'we've given up on coming up with original content'.

Dick Wolfe is done, Boomtown and The Shield are the future.

Oh gaw.... I feel all of your pain

Over the holidays I decided to rent one of the 24 (Season 1) DVD's and got hooked... Hada rent all of them before I was satisfied to see the new season...

Huge Shield fan... JANUARY!!! I can't wait

Law & Order!!... Watch all 3... Have a problem w/ CI... No court in the entire darn episode... Although the detectives are good charecters.. It's simply just Order? eh?

Boomtown!?.... The halloween episode was great. When they dressed up and he got shot in the front of the house I almost jumped from my chair!

On a similar note.... To add to the list of already great Cop dramas out there? 3rd Watch?... Consistently great show... The first 2 minutes (before the intro credits) always have a OMG I can't believe that just happened moment that you can never believe. Last episode Bosco (cop on the show) was yelling at a perp to sit up in the back seat b/c he didn't want him laying down on the way to the station. As soon as he sat up the perp got his head shot off by a shot aiming at Bosco.....

Too many shows!!!! So little time...

Not to mention the always-reliable Lenny Briscoe Sarcastic Quip™ that comes right before cutting to the opening credits.

I'm also a L&O fan, but I definitely prioritize Boomtown over the original L&O due to what I call the "freshness factor." In general, I know exactly what I'm getting from each episode of L&O; The fun is in watching the terrific execution. However, there's very little development of the main characters, police procedural in a very pure form.

Boomtown has the freshness. I'm seeing characters develop. Relationships are forged and broken. The development of Neal McDonough's character has been especially well done. Donnie Walberg has obviously been paying his acting dues as his subtle performances impress me week after week. The show is certainly still finding it's feet. The Russian mob story wasn't the best written (Any time you can advertise a show with "X's finest hour...), but the well written episodes are -very- well written. I'm thinking of "All Hallow's Eve," "Insured by Smith and Wesson," and "The David McNorris Show" when I say well written.

To be honest, I find it a bit difficult to watch SVU due to the content. I don't mind blood and guts, but the subject matter they deal with on SVU is truely evil.

I look forward to more episodes of Boomtown, and hope they write more terrific episodes.

Studio: I know what you mean, my other problem with CI is dude detective, sometimes the character is very well played, but sometimes his dramatic pauses after every other word gets irritating. I think the lady detective shouldn't be such an ancillary role. She should be more active in actually developing the case.

Spire: I can't believe I left that out, there's also half way through where they put their suspect through the ringer, bring him up on charges, and then realize he's not the murderer.

When was the last time they actually had character development in L&O? They used to have things like Lenny's daughter, and Ray cheating on his wife. I guess they did have Serena go up against the ethics board (or whatever it was).

Posted by: smak

I've only been watching the original L&O for a few years, but i think there is 0 character development, but that's not what the show is about.

And I agree that the opening of the original L&O has been the same for at least the 2 years i've been watching the show.

I like CI the best right now, because the audience having a good idea who the perp is makes the execution different than every other cop show. I like seeing scenes with the bad guys that don't involve the cops, so we can see a little behind the scenes stuff.

And since CSI, Without A Trace, Crossing Jordan, etc are basically cop shows with different people as the cops, i like the non-mystery aspect of CI.

-smak-

Ps. Has anybody noticed the increased airtime for a CSI (or CSU) person on the cop shows now. I don't remember ever seeing that many of them on Law & Order or NYPD Blue, but now i see them in almost every episode.

I also like Vincent D'Onofrio's strange, creepy portrayal...even when he does pause between words. (And they're even started to make jokes about his knowing everything, like the odd little double-take his partner gave him when he couldn't read Aramaic).

That was from 2 or 3 seasons back. I'm guessing you saw this esipode on A &E.

Finally got around to watching "Crash" from a 11/17. Wow. The non-serial nature of the show rather threw me for the first few minutes. After I figured out the concept, I really enjoyed it.

And TiVo definitely helps with this show. There was one point specifically in "Crash" where they flashed back to the scene shown at the very beginning of the episode. As soon as the flashback started, I knew I had seen it before, but I couldn't remember what happened. Quick zip back to the beginning, and watched the semi tractor plow through the house. Oh yeah!

Good show, too bad we probably won't see any more for a month.

I've been participating in the NBC surveys and they emailed me asking that I watch Boomtown last Sunday and they would survey after. I knew they were up to something and wanted opinions on it.

As it turned out the survey was heavily focused on the format of the show. According to the survey they had received complaints on the non-typical 'all roads lead to the same point' type of story line. They were trying out a progressive storyline but still focusing on individual characters with each having a segment leading up to the end. I prefer the 'all roads' type of approach storyline.

Posted by: zaknafein

As do I. It would be a shame to see this show dumbed down to another typical cop show. The format is one of its strongest, most interesting aspects

Posted by: dmaneyapanda

i also got the pre-show "please watch me" email, and took the survey afterwards. i also saw the bias towards questions regarding whether it would be a better show with a linear storyline.

my exact comment was similar to zaknafein's: "if you make it progression, then it's just another cop show, and i would probably stop watching it"...which isn't quite true, but i think the twists they've cranked out so far have been pure magic.

oh, one last thing. i also think teri got locked up against a curb, which tends to just pull you over the side unless you're strong enough to violently turn the wheel right.

I love Boomtown, Best new show in my humble opinion, #3 on my SP.. hope more people watch it.. Last show I liked this much was High Incident and it got cancelled. :(

Posted by: philw1776

My wife & I both love this show and we're hard to please. It's uneven episode to episode but always interesting. Love the manner of storytelling & the plot twists. Good character development & actors too.
