$8.93 Philips Universal Remote

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: Virt

Stopped into Walmart yesterday and picked up the Philips/Magnavox PM335B 3-Device Universal Remote for $8.93.

I bought it thinking it would work on my Apex AD-1100W DVD Player, but as usual it did not.

A happy surprise though was that it did have two TiVo codes (738, 838) so I set it up for my SA HDR212 and it works great. It can do ALL the same functions as the original peanut remote, but some buttons are of course labeled different.

TIVO = Power
Select = Enter
LiveTV = Menu
Thumbs Down = Toggle/Title
Thumbs Up = CC/Subtitle
Enter = Prev Chan/Repeat OR PIP OR OK
Clear = Quit
Forward Skip = Info/Select
Replay = TV/VCR/Input

It also does TV, VCR, DVD, LaserDisc, Cable, DirecTV, Dish Network and C-Band. Circuit City also carries this model (although their number is PM335 not PM335B) for $9.99.

This remote is actually manufactured by Gemini industries, who also make the Zenith remotes, so I would assume the other code will run Sony units as shown in this thread.

If you are looking for a very cheap temporary remote until another arrives or as an emergency backup, this fits the ticket.

I guess I'll just stash mine away for the day when the other is lost or broken...

Can it handle the remote-codes if you have more than one Tivo? It won't do me any good as an emergency backup if I can't set it to a specific Tivo.

Will it work the DSR6000 DTiVo?

Posted by: Maui

The one I am using looks exactly the same but has a few more buttons at the top to control more items.

As for different questions about control codes and different models I do not know. It just lists Tivo in its list of codes for VCR's along with two codes. That is all the info it gives.

As for Apex, mine does not control my apex either. It would have been nice but I bought it as a replacement for the Dead Tivo remote. And it works well with my tv and VCR so I was able to get rid of some of my Remote clutter

Don't waste your money! I have one of these and it has a fatal flaw... It has no arrow buttons, so there is no way to use any of the TiVo menus or even to select a recording from Now Playing.

That is pretty bad. How the heck is everyone else using theirs without the arrows?

Because it does have arrows. I don't know what the problem was with the remote Dan received but mine works great on my unmodified phillips branded tivo.

If you look at the picture in the first message there is a small circle of buttons near the bottom of the remote.

That small circle is the four arrow buttons and the small button in the center of them is is the enter button.

Works like a charm

Only fully programmable universal remotes are going to support remote-codes. Personnaly, I've been using the JP1 remotes with great success, although there are other choices out there.

Check out the Radio Shack 15-2116 ($30.00)and the One For All URC-8811 ($25)

In order to program these remotes from your computer, you'll need to make/buy yourself a JP1 cable, and download the JP1 software. All the information you need is at http://www.hifi-remote.com/jp1/index.shtml, http://groups.yahoo.com/group/jp1/ (requires joining), and http://www.remotecentral.com/cgi-bi...ne4all/list.cgi

Oops I missed that. Mine must have been the older version, because it didn't have the arrows.

Thanks for the heads up Dan! I was headed out to Wal-mart to pick one up. I was checking the exact model number when I saw your post.

Hmm, so I still need a replacement remote (moved this weekend and packed it in a box, and can't find it).

To the Tivo Store, Robin!

So Virt, did you eventually find a remote that works with the 1100W? Because I have one of those too, and the remote is awful.

If it works on a Stand Alone Philips, it should work on a DSR6000. I find both my Penut Remote & My JP1 remote are 99% interchangable when it comes to using them on the DRS6K v.s. the SA(HDR312). Meaning that I can use the DSR remote to control every function of the Stand Alone. I can use the Stand Alone to control the DSR6000. And I can use my JP1 cable to control either box without changing anything.

Well, I found a PM335 at circuit cities web site. It looks exactly the same(even the color), but doesn't have the "b" at the end of the model number. If this isn't the exact same model, has anyone else found this remote on line?

Posted by: groundcrack

I took another look at it. It's not the same. It's missing the two smaller buttons just above the #1 & #2 Buttons.

I got mine at circuit city for 16.99 I think. The only difference it has compared to the one in the picture above is the mine has a silver face and it controls one more device.

Posted by: groundcrack

Well, outpost.com has a PM435 for $12-that has all of the buttons. I assume that's what maui-lover is talking about. Virt, What do those two buttons do(the ones that are missing from the circuit city remote)?

The buton directly over the #1 is PIP (or ENTER on TiVo). There are two other buttons on the PM335B that also act as ENTER for TiVo (OK or Prev/Chan) so this would still work.

The button directly over the #2 is Toggle/Title which acts as Thumbs Down for TiVo. There is no other button for this on the PM335B, so I assume you wouldn't be able to use Thumbs Down on the PM335.

Thanks Virt! The Philips PM335B works great for my simple HDR312/TV split analog cable setup. No more juggling two remotes! Cheap too! The necessary buttons are pretty well marked correctly too.

Thanks. Good Info. Unfortunatley, I do a lot of Rebooting. So, I need the Thumbs Down button. I think I'm going to take my chances with the PM435.

Is there any way to get the standby button?

Posted by: Mysteryman

I picked up one of these to use as a backup tivo controller. I'll post a minor word of warning.

This remote is a little slow. The best example of this is fast forwarding through a commercial block and trying to hit play to get back to the program. There is a half second or so delay. I don't get this delay with the original peanut, nor the 34 button peanut from the Tivo Store I picked up to replace this universal.

If you are just looking for a cheap backup, this one works okay, but don't expect the same speed out of it as the oem.

Will someone please post instuctions on how to program the remote(PM435B, PM335, 335B, etc.) for the Tivo. I lost my instructions & just want to get it working for the tivo right now. The batteries died,and it cleared the programing.

TIVO CODES: 738, 838

***Direct Code Entry***

1. Press and hold the Code Search button untill the red indicator stays on. Release the Code Search button.

2. Press and release the desired mode button (TV, DVD, etc.). The red indicator blinks, then stays lit.

3. Enter the desired 3 digit code from the code tables. Note: For a valid code entry, the red indicator turns off. For an invalid code, the red indicator flashes.

4. With your device on, press Channel Up. If the device responds, no further programing is needed.

***Programming With Code Search***

1. Manually turn on the device (TV, DVD, etc.).

2. Press and hold Code Search button until the red indicator stays on. Release the Code Search button.

3. Press and release the desired mode button (TV, DVD, etc.). The red indicator blinks then stays lit.

4. Press the Channel Up button repeatedly (up to 300+ times) until the device to be controlled changes channel. The red indicator blinks, then stays lit. If you accidentally overshoot the code required, press the Channel Down button to backtrack through the library until the device changes channel. Pressing Channel Up changes direction to forward again.

5. Press and release the Mute button to install the code.

Thank you very much. Actually, the first 1/2 of the instructions were all I needed, but I really appreciate all the info. In case I never find the instructions, physically, or online, I guess I have what I need to do a search for code :)

Posted by: groundcrack

Awsome, it worked! I actually tried using the Codes listed in the first post in a similar manner. I could have sworn I held down the Code Search button, and it didn't stay red. Oh well, it works now. Thats all that matters. :)

In case anyone else loses a manual, here is a link http://www.gemini-usa.com/pdf/PM435.pdf

I got frustrated. I emailed Philips, they were supposed to respond in 2 business days. 5 bus. days later = Nothing. Then I tried to find phone numbers & each one I called, I couldn't get to a live person. Finally, I found a Chat support page. Within 3 min., the chat suport person had the Adobe manual automatically pop up on my cumputer. Killer :)

Here's the chat link http://www.p4c.philips.com/cgi-bin/...n=chat&lang=eng

I bought this remote (Philips PM335) at Circuit City for 10 bucks after I read some of the posts here. This remote isn't worth $1 if you ask me. Most of the tivo buttons are on keys that make no sense at all. I used it for several days and just couldn't handle the button layout. When people program universal remotes they usually use one of two methods (or a combination of both): 1) you program the keys as close as you can to the corresponding universal's keys (i.e., Pause to the Pause button) and/or 2) you try to duplicate the layout/location of the original remote's keys on the universal remote. They seem to have used neither of those methods programming this remote and just randomly placed most of the keys.

I probably would have kept it if it wasn't for the really bad response time compared to the original tivo remote, the spongy FF/RW/Play buttons, and having the FF/RW/Play/Pause/etc and arrow keys at the bottom of the remote. Well worth spendy a few bucks more and getting something easier to use.
