Can new $199 Series2 fit 2nd Hard Drive?

Wondering if anyone has gotten (or heard of) one of the new $199 40-hour Tivo units having the second hard disk bay... I've seen speculation on some posts that these new models will use the 80-hour chassis that only holds a single drive.

Gotta decide in the next couple days if I'm going to send back my 40hr AT&T model and get one of these newer units (that ship with 3.2) instead!

Any ideas are appreciated...

I called TiVo sales yesterday and was told the new 40 hr units did have room for another drive. The person I spoke with said the only Series 2 that didn't have the second slot was the 80 hr TiVo unit

I just bought the new 40 hour tivo and it arrived yesterday. According to the model number on the back its a tcd230040 and this one is not upgradeable to 2 drive it only has one.

If you want to upgrade the drive on it, you can and the instructions
here

details on tivo models:
Series 2 Models

TiVo 60hr Series 2 DVR Standalone Single 60GB A drive

TiVo 80hr Series 2 DVR Standalone Single 80GB A drive (Only room for single drive)

AT&TiVo 40hr TCD130040 Standalone Single 40GB A drive

AT&TiVo 40hr TCD230040 Standalone Single 40GB A drive (Only room for single drive)

Sony 80hr SVR3000 Standalone Single 80GB A drive

Hughes 35hr HDVR2 DirecTiVo Single 40GB A drive (Only room for single drive)

If anyone is upgrading let me know I want to know how it goes.
Thanks

Will this unit require a bracket and new cable? I just ordered one from Tivo directly since they are selling the reconditioned units for $149 after rebate and free shipping. Will be a nice replacement for my series 1.

The 40hr and 80hr TiVos use the same box, which has one hard disk and a styrofoam insert mounted inside. People have removed this insert and used a special mounting bracket in order to jury-rig a 2nd hard drive.

If you don't want to mess with the additional bracket, older 130040 units are apparently still available from the AT&T site. It will cost you $25 more for shipping, but the cost should be somewhat mitigated by the fact that you don't have to buy a bracket, and hassle with squeezing the second drive in.

Even though the model number is listed as 130040 on the ATT site, what people are getting is often the newer 230040 model, which has room for only one drive. I got the 230040 from the ATT Tivo website when I ordered in December. I think they shipped the 130040 until they were gone, then started shipping the 230040. Since there are several distribution warehouses, YMMV. Mine came from Salt Lake City.

Adding a second drive to the new 230040 unit is trivial using a bracket kit and cable. The styrofoam comes out in one piece very easily.

That's good to know. I have upgraded a couple of 130040's without much difficulty. However, a co-worker who just purchased a 230040 is starting to make noise about "capacity," so I anticipate another upgrade in the offing...
