how are conflicts handled?

My Sony SVR-3000 is on the way and just wondering how conflicts are handled. If I have a season pass scheduled to record a series, for example, and then I forget about that and later schedule recording of a show on during the same time slot on a different channel, what happens?

When you go to schedule a recording of another show it will warn you of the conflict and let you decide what you want to record.

Ah, makes sense. How about the scenario where I have two season passes, and the network juggles the schedule as they do on occasion, and puts one season pass in conflict with another without my knowing it? Do I get an alert or something next time I'm "in" Tivo? If so, I assume that if I don't check in regularly, I would miss the alert and not be able to avoid the conflict, so Tivo would have some default behavior to handle it?

It will go on what SP has the highest priority so make sure you have your priorities in order! :p

There is a to-do list which will show you everything that is scheduled to record for the next 10-11 days. And at the top of the to-do list, there is a feature called "recording history". When you select that, it will show you what was recorded and deleted in the past, but will also list the programs in the future 10-11 days that are on your season pass list but will not record due to conflicts, drive space, or any other reason. So all I do is go in ever week or so and look forward in recording history to make sure there's nothing there that I'd miss.
After you setup 10, 15, 20 season passes, you can expect to have many, many conflicts over time. There is no way you would want to be alerted about each one individually; the list in recording history works quite well.

Also, if you have multiple airings of a show (which is not that uncommon) and one of them displaces another, TiVo will try to find an alternate airing of the second one and record that.
What it won't do, because it's actually very complicated to implement when you get down to brass tacks, is consider rescheduling the first show to an alternate airing, if the first has alternates and the second doesn't. That's one of the reasons it's a good idea to glance over your To Do List every so often.

Right I like this feature, though not its name. Should be split into "recording history" and "future conflicts" or some such.

To more clearly understand what has already been said:
Scenario 1. You set a season pass for show A. You later set up a season pass for show B that is on the same time as show A. You will get an immediate alert letting you know of the conflict.
Scenario 2. You have a season pass for show A and B that are normally on at different times. One week, show A moves to the same time as show B. You will NOT get a warning. Instead, the show with the higher priority will get recorded.
Hint: when setting up your season pass manager, put shows that repeat often (cable channels like HBO and Comedy Central) at a lower priority. This way if it conflicts with a non-repeating (network) show TiVo will record the show that doesn't repeat and automatically set up a later recording for the repeating show.

Great tips. Thanks everyone!
I started work today running a phone line over behind the entertainment center. Should have it wrapped up tomorrow. The UPS tracking shows that the machine is set to be delivered Thursday.
I started looking into Tivo about a year ago. I had the money almost saved up earlier in the year, but then I got laid off in April, so that postponed everything. I finally got a job a few weeks ago, so this is sort of our gift to ourselves. It has been a long time coming and I can't wait!

Make sure you understand the way the priority list works for Season Passes and Auto Record wish lists works. It's really simple. If two shows are on at the same time, the one higher on the list (i.e. the one with the lower number) gets recorded. It does *not* take into account any possible future airings.
So, if you have two shows scheduled. Show A airs once a week on Wednesday at 8:00 PM. Show B airs Wedneday at 8:00 PM, but also airs Wednesday at 11:00 PM and then Saturday at 10:00 AM. If B is higher in the list than A, B gets recorded Wednesday at 9:00 PM. It *will not* see the future airings. You won't ever get A. If you are ever unsure, check the To Do list to see what will record, and check recording history to see why something *won't* record.
