Angel - nothing new until January 8th??

I can't believe we have to wait until January for new Angel episodes. I didn't even realize last night was a repeat and I taped it and hadn't even checked it out yet. A friend informed me of the repeat and I checked the episode guide at http://www.epguides.com/angel/.

Yeah, kind of a drag, but this at least gives my sister (and anyone else) time to catch up on this season.

Many shows take December off--the thinking, I guess, is that people have better things to do.
Silly idea, if you ask me, but then, I'm not normal.

I know Tivo will tell you ,but realize that Angel now moves to Wednesdays instead of Sunday's, so make sure you have no conflicts.

Has the Wednesday switch been announced? Last I heard, it was just a rumor...

Yeah, those last few weeks of the year and the first new week of the year are when you'll start to see all those "repeat & first run" season passes you have buried at the bottom of your SPM start to produce some results.....

I read about the Wednesday switch on the futon critic last week. It's taking over the Bird's of Prey time slot. This is from the web site:
Wednesdays: Fourth-year series "Angel" will take over the "Birds of Prey" slot in mid-January. Levin blamed "Prey's" failure on not having a strong writing showrunner on board to get the series on track creatively.

There's also mention of the time slot change here:
WB exec talks BIRDS cancellation.

I find it depressing that there are less and less new episodes per season each year.... Not just on Angel, but all shows in general seem to start their seasons later, and take more and more breaks... Before you know it, we'll have about 5 episodes per season.. a premiere, a break, a sweeps week, a break, another sweep or 2, a break, and the finale.

There's usually 22-24 episodes per season. Is that down from previous decades?

Way back when, there would be 40 episodes in a season, with only summer repeats. Eventually that got cut down to 22 episodes for dramas and 24 for sitcoms, although some series will do as many as 25 or 26 episodes.

Way back when, in this case, means 30 or 40 years ago. Gunsmoke, for example, did 39 episodes in 1956 and maintained that pace for ~10 years. Even they had dwindled to 24 episodes in the last few seasons. A quick--and completely unscientific--survey of some popular shows of the late 70s-80s indicates that the shorter season was already entrenched:
Lou Grant
77-81
20-24 episodes per year
Hill Street Blues
81-87
17-22 episodes per year
Cagney and Lacey
82-88
7-24 episodes per year (they had a couple bizarrely short seasons, but most were 22)
St. Elsewhere
82-88
22-24 episodes per year
So, it's not like things have changed in the last couple decades--things have been like this for quite a long time. I do think that we notice more now, and I am not sure why that is. I don't remember Hill Street Blues, for example, running repeats a lot, or going off the air for months and I remember the premieres in September and the finales in May so there must have been as many weeks off as there are now. It's a puzzlement.

I blame TiVo. I think before TiVo, I used to miss episodes of shows, so even when reruns were on, I used to watch, hoping to see a show I hadn't seen before. Now, Since I don't miss the shows the first time, I really notice when they repeat for weeks at a time.

Bart and Homer watching "Do shut up" on PBS:
"And, at seven episodes, it's the BBC's longest running show".

I didn't want to burn an entire thread on this - and I imagine most of the Angel fans are also Buffy fans...
Tensai over at the Spoiler Slayer reports that TV Guide is listing a new episode of Buffy on December 17, and ECH at the Fan Forum confirms this report. This is good news for those Buffy fans who were going through withdrawal after hearing that Buffy had also been on the whole December repeat spree. :)

I just happened to be looking at the Angel schedule and now the next episode appears to have been pushed back a week to 1/15.

You're right, tomorrow is the final double-helping of Birds of Prey.

Just an FYI to those in the Baltimore area who watch on WB 54, Angel is being preempted by a Terps game and Tivo says it'll be on at 5 PM on Saturday the 18th.
TVGuide.com says it's an Enterprise rerun for some reason; they've never aired Enterprise on that channel.
