Do the "Good Eats" DVDs match the TV episodes?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I'm a new fan of Alton Brown's "Good Eats" on the Food Network. I'm been recording every show on my TiVo, and as you can imagine, it's eating up (pun intended) a lot of hard drive space.

I'm interested in the 3-disc DVD set available on foodtv.com. Is the content from the DVD identical to the TV episodes? I know there are some episodes that are not on the DVDs, but it looks like a lot of them are.

If it turns out that the DVDs and the TV episodes are identical, then it means I can buy the DVDs and erase a whole bunch of episodes that I've recorded so far.

Sorry, I don't know anybody that has purchased them. I'd try calling and asking.

As for the show, it's great. The best cooking show I've seen. Let's us know the why as well as the how to. And the humor is refreshingly simple.

My wife's the person who usually has TiVo record all the cooking shows. But, for "Good Eats," I've actually added a second Thumb to the show. Excellent show.

The episode that got me hooked was where he was shipwrecked on a desert isle. I walked in half-way through it and that was it: caught.

Do you have a VCR hooked up to your TiVo? I transfer Good Eats to video tape. I have 3 full video tapes, recorded at EP, of Good Eats and I just started the fourth tape! I have a list for each tape with the name of the episode and where it starts on the tape.

I have seen one of the DVD's. They seem to be the same as the tv episodes but without the commercial breaks. There is also a chapter for each episode that is just the recipe instructions that you can page through at your own pace.

I received the three DVD set as a gift earlier this year. The episodes -do- track the TV episodes exactly. Also included are the recipes and a video Q&A ffilmed during the the making of the "Down and Out in Paradise" special (not included on the DVDs).

Jucy meats:
Steak your Claim
Pork Fiction
A Bird in the Pan

Super Sweets:
Three Chips for Sister Marsh
The art of Darkness
Churn Baby Churn

Holiday Treats:
Romancing the Bird
Behind the Bird
It's A Wonderful Cake

Alton rocks!

I catch every one.. I tried the Chicken & 40 cloves, but must have made a mistake, too strong.

Also, "Cooks tour" can be good at times, last week was Cambodia. It reaffirmed that I'll never go there to eat :D

I tried his lobster recipe and it was freaking AWESOME! Lots of work though, but very good for a special occaision.

I also tried a few of the eggplant recipes, but I've decided I do not care that much for eggplant. It's o.k., but since it has no nutritional value I see no reason to put up with it :D

:p My philosophy is to never eat anything that's purple or starts with the letter "Z." Each of those things means that no one got around to classifying it as "food" until way late in the game. Oh, and all nuts are poisonous: everyone who eats one dies. :p

Alton Brown is my personal hero. Make the country ham with Dr. Pepper. Oh my, the juiciest ham in the world.

Why can't they just release all the seasons like they do for other shows? I would gladly pay $50-$70 per season of the show. Granted, it's the only show I would pay that much for, but the recipes are awesome.

I've made the Chocolate Lava Muffins on several occassions -- everyone loves them!

Great show -- entertaining and educational!

Too bad they don't have "The Remains of the Bird" on there, that's one of my favorites. Of course, I live in Atlanta (and have even been to a few of the places that show up in the show) so I thought the situation there ("The weather bureau has predicted another half-inch of snow!" "We'll be stranded for weeks!") particularly funny.

Of course, my favorite episode is still "Cast Iron Chef".

While this show was fun, it didn't really give me anything useful. Like I am really going to make my own smoker so I can cure my own pork belly to make bacon. The only thing useful was the tip to cook bacon in the oven.

I'd agree, the ep was funny and original, but a little lax in useful information. But, it'll always have a special place in my heart--it was the first thing I ever recorded on a DTiVo!

"Behind the Bird" is the "Remains of the Bird."

Ah, thanks! I must have flipped the title in my mind. Hmm... Wonder if there's enough time to add to my Christmas wish list... :)

And yes, I know that "Cast Iron Chef" was light on actual useful recipes but I still thought it was a great ep (and I'm watching mostly for entertainment anyway).
