Wd 120 7200 Ok?

I have been having a lot of trouble with my upgraded DTivo lately (GSOD + Reboot Loop). It appears to be drive related, but both drives passed recertification. I also low level formatted both.

This is the 2nd time I have lost everything. I have rebuilt it this evening, restoring my backup to the orginal 40gb drive. I am considering buying a 120gb drive and replacing the 40GB (and 80GB which isn't currently hooked up) with it. That takes both drives out of the equation and gives me all the space I should need.

There's a decent deal on a Western Digital 120GB 7200RPM drive with 2MB cache. Has anyone used this or a similar drive? How's the heat and noise?

thanks,

I have just replaced the 40GB drive in my stand alone series 1 with two of these WD drives. No noticeable increase in noise, and not had any heat problems as yet.

Check out this thread: http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-v...&threadid=87659

I have not noticed any increase in noise, and my T60 has been stable at 53C since the upgrade.

Thanks guys, think I'll go ahead and order one of these and be done with it. I really hope this does the trick.

Did you see this thread? $100 for the 120MB WD drive: http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-v...&threadid=88063

FYI, my T60 is now running at 52C. Not sure why, just cooled down a degree or so (this was while it was recording two shows at once).

Didn't see that one, but saw it on Fatwallet. Drive should be delivered tomorrow. Now that I have my original 40GB up and running again with most of my season passes restored, I'll make a new backup to have just in case. Then I plan to do the Tiger’s Mfs Tools "Upgrade Configuration 3" routine to this new drive and hope everything goes well.

Thanks again,

This is the WD12000BB we're talking about, right? Man, I must have bad karma or something. I just finished an upgrade with one of these drives, and the noise is killing me! It's got an obnoxious high-pitched whine that no amount of padding can muffle. Right now I'm glad I left the original drive intact, 'cause I'm going to be going back to it soon! Looks like I wasted $90 (t-day sale).

Yep, that's the one. Funny thing is that I got the drive but haven't had time to install it. After reading a bunch more posts and reviews of the samsung drive, I am really considering returning the WD unopened and getting the samsung.

Thanks for sharing your experience.

I installed one of the WD1200BB drives about a month ago, and about once a week I hear the high pitched whine as well. I keep thinking at the time "I won't be able to live THAT!" and then I forget about it and don't hear it anymore. I will even listen for it when the room is quiet and won't hear it, just pops up at random.

I've had a similar experience in the past; however, in this case the sound is easily heard and consistent. The only time I don't hear it is when the A/C turns on (my A/C is very loud and good at masking other sounds). Part of the problem is that I spend so much time in my living room; I could stand it if I could turn the noise off at times, but the TiVo is the one thing that's on 24/7.

my WD 120G (JB model) is absolutely quiet.
On the other hand my WD 80G (JB too) is loud. Seems that it resonates with the quantum fireball right next to it and I can't stand it.

I can't wait until I can afford to swap out the 80G. Worse, the loud tivo is the one of the bedroom!

Well, I'm starting to get used to it, but even that worries me; theoretically, a constant background tone can desensitize your hearing in that range, which I'd rather not have happen. (Ok Ok so I'm a hypochondriac :) ) Oddly enough, it seems like I can hear voices & such better now (at lower volumes); it's like that noise is acting as a pilot tone or something. Weird, huh?

Update: well, I mucked with that tivo last weekend and it turns out that the original 30gb fireball was the loud one. I had put the WD 80gb as drive A and used the original mounting bracket for it.
The 30gb was on a custom made bracket (recycled pc part) that I simply stuck with double sided tape, and that was not absorbing vibrations as well as the original bracket.

I now have a WD 80gb (8mb cache) and a new maxtor 120gb (8mb cache too) and both are super quiet.
We can't hear the tivo at all now. Woo hoo.
