Series 2 Dead! What now?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Ok, my series 2 Tivo is frozen at welcome screen. Reboots/unplugs do nothing, clicking sound is heard. I assume that is a dead HDD, so if I get a new one, how will I be able to transfer image from a dead drive?

I do not want to send Tivo $100 for them to fix it and get the same size dive, (mine is unmodified) I am willing to attempt a drive swap/upgrade, but the step by step posts I read don't talk about what to do if you can't transfer the Tivo software to a new disk.

I don't care too much about saving season pass info, I can just put them in again.

Thanks for your help.

Is this a new Tivo? Have you opened the case? It may still be covered under warranty.

Ask around, and you should be able to find a restore image from someone here.

It is less than 1 year, but past 90 days, they say parts are covered for a year, but to replace it they charge $99 labor. (rip)

Ok, if anyone has a restore image, plz let me know..

Sorry I don't have a link, but I remember reading of forum members getting drives RAM's directly from the drive manufacture.

I know you'll still need an image, but they are available. There is a thread that keeps bumping up, from a forum member that might be able to help with that.

Some websites sell "A drive" replacements that have the Tivo software already on it. Look around on eBay...

You can download a drive image (you can look or ask here: http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-v...&threadid=62430 ) and do it yourself with a new drive or buy a premade upgrade from places like weaknees.com - though it looks like they start at $189 for an 80GB drive.

The ftp site from that thread doesn't have any Series II images.
