Can I copy hd info from series 1 to series 2?

I'm thinking of getting my sister a tivo for christmas, but durned it - *I* want the series 2. I've read the posts that pretty much tell me I can't just move the drives from my series 1 over to the series 2, but is there any way I can copy my data while retaining the series 2 functionality?

No can do. The software is different between the series 1 and 2 units and the drives are not interchangeable, at least not directly. You can upgrade the series 2 unit with larger drives but that involves backing up the original drive and restoring the image to the new larger drive(s). You cannot, however, transfer your recordings from a series 1 to a series 2 Tivo unless you export the video from the old Tivo to the new one via the analog RCA connections like you would if archiving to a VCR. There will probably be some degradation of the signal due to the extra D/A and A/D processing involved.

Interesting. So MFS Tools 2.0 can do a backup/restore with or without recordings, but not *just* recordings? Bummer.
