Taken - "Maintenance" **SPOILERS**

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Wow. Just finished up watching tonites ep delayed. I watched yesterday's ep earlier.

Still very "taken" by the whole series.

Spoiler Alert! (highlight to read)
Eric seems to be as much of a ******* as his old man, regarding turning over his predecessor to the authorities on accessory to murder, and on blackmailing his way into his father's position

I agree with your take on Eric. And I've only seen the first few minutes of "Maintenance".

Speaking of the opening scenes...

One thing bothers me about the opening scene, where Eric learns about Owen's involement in the murders. Where (in which episode) does that scene properly belong? This is shown as if it were from a previous episode, coming just before the title and right after other scenes from previous episodes. But I think it's new material first seen here in "Maintenance"... right? So is this a blooper, or a weird editing technique?

I noticed that technique as well. They rearrange the time sequence of events. I think it's a pretty fresh approach, but I haven't figured out the exact right order.

I can't wait until Monday to see what happens next :)

I wonder if there aren't scenes that were cut for time...maybe the DVD will be uncut!

Posted by: DanT

Yeah, I assumed it was an from the previous episode ("Acid Tests") and just cut for time. Or else the editor on that episode screwed up and cut it, and the editor for this episode didn't know it had been cut. But it was integral to the storyline of how Eric took over the project, so it absolutely had to be included somewhere.

And how about that alien? Has he been pretending to be dead for 33 years? That's some mega-patience on his (her?) part.

This is an excellent series. I can't imagine trying to watch it w/o tivo.

It had me so confused that I stopped the show from playing and immediately went to check my recording history to see if I hadn't somehow missed an earlier episode!

I guess it was edited to fit within an hour and left on the floor... even though it was important enough to the plot/character development to require explaining in "Maintenance".

J

PS. Gotta find that girl narrator and do something to shut her up. How many more times do I have to hear...

"Sometimes people blah blah blah, but I really thing that they blah blah blah." Enough already with the 'observations'!!!

:) Yeah, I know what you're saying jr. I was hoping she'd make a comment about that GMC(?), I think it was a Pacer, car at the opening of "Maintenance" along the lines of "Momma always told me not to buy poorly built American cars...", but it was not to be.

I can't blame the other folks who were confused by the disclosure to Owen's son of the murders, but it seems like they just slipped it in there to set up Eric betraying his Dad's partner. This series is far from perfect, I hated the guy w/ the lousy German accent in the first few installments, but it is compelling. I simply CAN'T stop watching.

I think it's the opening scene of Maintenance. Since Owen killed both Howard(?) and his wife in ep 4, it seems right for that.

Besides it sets the stage for later when Eric turns his predecessor over to the civilian authorities.

That was my thought too. They slipped it in at the begining of this episode because they didn'thave time the previous night.

Ok, I knowI said I wouldn't watch it because I really hate that network at the moment, but this is prety F-ing good. Decent writing and mostly good acting. The two actors I had problems with is the german accent and the guy who played Becky's husband. A couple of his scenes sounded like he was reading, poorly, straight from the script.

First of all... Wow! I TiVo'd the 10 hour marathon Saturday and ended up watching all 10 hours in one sitting yesterday. Brilliant character driven Sci-Fi.

The revelation of Owen murdering his wife and subordinate didn't bother me. I do have two outstanding questions.

1.) What happened to the father and two scout sons that found the initial saucer? How exactly did Owen "take care of them"?

2.) What about the blinking alien in stasis? Do you think the reason he regained consciousness is because the aliens had come back to get the ship? I know they didn't pick him up, but their energy being present would be a good catalyst for him coming out of his stasis.

I can't take Eric Crawford seriously. Why? Because every time I see him on the screen I can't get past him playing a character that was a sex toy to Schillinger and the Aryans on Oz.
bidger, I believe that was an AMC Pacer. I guess Tom spent all his money from the real estate boom to take down Owen.

You know, I typed AMC first & thought it didn't look right. Made me wonder if TCM, TBS, CNN, etc. had their own line of automobiles. ;)

I liked the German guy, though I kept thinking of his role as Stanford in Sex in the City.

One more question to add to the two above:

1.) How did you interpret the note to Eric that Owen left in the wall safe? It either said "I was wrong about you..." or "I was right about you..." but I wasn't sure how to take it either way.

No one has asked how Eric gained control of the project. It didn't appear that he was a military officer or anything - he just tagged along with his dad. I understand he's a manipulator like his dad, but it would take a lot of manipulation of the Air Force to hand such a project to someone whose only qualification is that his dad ran it.

He blackmailed some of the generals in charge of the project with copies of files he dad kept that had their signatures on it. That was in the first bit of the episode, I believe.

They *did* pick him up, but you'll only find out in the next episode. :)

My own question answered 5 minutes into Charlie and Lisa. Now if people would only answer my two #1 questions. ;)

Posted by: Dancar

The implication is that Owen had the man & scouts quietly killed.

Eric was definitely an Air Force officer. When we first see him "tagging along" with his dad, he's wearing the uniform.

We did the exact same thing! We also decided that it was an edited scene that found its way into the 'recap.'

I've also noticed that the 'recaps' on the webpage aren't exactly spot on... The recap for Episode 6 (for example) refers to Lisa and Charlie meeting for the first time along with 2 dozen other teenagers on a ship (did I miss that?), says that 6 years later, Eric kidnaps Lisa Clarke, but that "the aliens take her from him and deposit her safely in Seattle," (her Uncle Tom took her there, and later the aliens 'walked her home' when Eric tried to kidnap her), and then, the aliens "try to take Charlie too, but he fights them off with an elaborate system to fend them off." (I thought that Charlie and Lisa were taken together in a simultaneous abduction which resulted in Lisa's conceiving Allie.) Am I watching the same show as the folks writing these recaps?

Having said that, I have found that interactive Family Tree to be invauable!
