Alias after the Super Bowl: uh oh...

The changes in Alias, this season vs. last, have been much-discussed in other threads. Not meaning to rehash them here, but I can't help being nervous about this quote from an ABC spokesman, announcing the show's airing after the game:
Mr. Braun said ABC waited to see the special script being written by the "Alias" creator J. J. Abrams before deciding it was ideal to use in the advantageous position behind the Super Bowl.
" `Alias" is on its normal night," Mr. Braun said, "and we think the episode is truly extraordinary." Mr. Abrams is hoping to use the new episode to reintroduce the series after the Super Bowl. `'J. J. has streamlined the storyline," Kevin Brockman, the entertainment spokesman for ABC Entertainment, said. "It's going to be more directly about good vs. evil."

Good grief, how much more streamlined can the storyline get? I wish that going after the masses didn't always mean dumbing things down. I miss the complexity of last season.

I agree, I hate shows being dumbed down. I guess it's a double edged sword for the producers. They want to maintain their core audience but they don't want a show so complicated that if a viewer misses an episode or two they won't come back because they feel they won't be able to follow what's going on.

The problem is likely that most of the audience missed the complexity of last season too...
Maybe this will find a middle ground.
