Step By Step HDD Upgrade Guide?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Hi all.

Just got my TIVO and want to add more storage space to it. Could someone point me in the right direction to a step by step guide?

It's a 1 drive UK Thomson tivo. I just want to add a 120Gb drive for now. How hard is this?

Would you recommend that i replace the original drive?

Thanks

Definitely replace the drive.

Fatbloke's Upgrade Diary. Follow his original upgrade if you want to keep his recordings, but instead of steps 3,4 and 5, boot MFS Tools 2.0 and do

mfsbackup -Tao - /dev/hdc | mfsrestore -s 127 -r 4 -xpi - /dev/hdb

I am not familiar with all of the mfsrestore options - what does the -r 4 option do exactly? I have not seen this option in an upgrade guide or thread before.

I'm getting ready to do my upgrade...

That fatbloke's diary RobertS mentioned above is nice and clear, and it's a lovely step-by-step addition to Hinsdale... Lots of pics, screenshots, etc...

I see he did this on a standalone... Is the process and code exactly the same for a DirecTivo?

thanks!

(I'm referring to his NEW upgrade... not worried about recordings...)

thanks!

The -r option sets the block size for the partitions created in the expansion process. The default is -r 2, which appears to make for a faster TiVo. -r 4 makes even larger blocks and appears to be safe, although it's not clear if it gives a real benefit.

The upgrade procedures are all very similar in the important respects. The precise command lines and other details do vary, so check Hinsdale for any special instructions that apply to your model.

Fatbloke's Diary details upgrades of UK (standalone) TiVoes.

Take a look at this thread. I used it to upgrade my T60.
