Another year of Friends confirmed. I don't think I can watch.

The only reason I have been watching this year is because I had hoped it would be the last year. I used to love this show but it has really gone downhill and I have found myself FFing through a lot of the shows this year. I don't think I can handle another year of it.

I'm still enjoying it and would more than likely continue watching it.

I think it is a smart move for the actors. It's another 22 million or so in each of their bank accounts. With what they have been paid in the recent seasons they should not have to even worry about work after the show is over. Assuming they don't blow the millions as fast as they earn it.

CNN just reported that there will only be 18 episodes, so I hope they can survive the pay cut.

No.

No.

Oh geez...is NBC *THAT* desperate?

Aren't the actors like 40 or 50 by now?

Isn't the gimmick that they're in their 20's?

And is that Yahoo article right? This is only season 6? It seems like that had 9-10 seasons already.

Urgh. And these are the same people who cancelled THE PRETENDER.

I like this bit though.

" Some of the actors had also seemed warm to the idea. Kudrow, interviewed on NBC's "Today" show in recent weeks, noted how the sitcom filming schedule, with its regular hours, was ideal for a young mother."

I never saw Friends on TV, but have been subjected to a few episodes during United's "in-flight entertainment" (translation - 90 minutes of non-stop NBC back-patting). It was painful to watch - I don't see the attraction at all. The writing seemed hackneyed with jokes I could see coming a mile away. Ah well, I already know my TV tastes are out of line with the general public...

They are on their ninth season so next year will be 10.

Whether you like it or hate it who can blame either NBC or the Producers or the Cast. It is the second most watched show of the season behind only CSI. The cast and producers get richer and NBC keeps their ratings another year.

"The One Where Ross Has His Retirement Party"

"The One Where Monica Buys Depends"

"The One Where Phoebe Gets Alzheimers"

Haha.

I still like the show and will continue to watch it.

Watch what you say... or Joey will eat YOUR lobster by mistake! Hilarity ensues! :D

Hey... how YOU doin'?

This is the only half-hour sitcom I still watch.

I used to be a funny, interesting show.

That was back in 1993. Now, the format has been imitated endlessly, and the show has refused to change one iota.

The network and the produces seem content to just milk the cash cow dry. I can't really blame them for it, but it sure would be nice if they'd put some more effort in. As it is now, this show sits on my TiVo for weeks before I get in the mood to see it. I expect my SP will be gone soon, but definitely when the season ends.

Joey is still hot....

Seriously though, I spent my teen years watching Friends.... my hubby and I still love and watch it.

Oh also, I noticed some one said that they are still playing mid 20's. Nope! Remember the 30th b-day party episode??

Posted by: Lori

"The One Where They All Turn Thirty", 7x14. Aired toward the middle of season 7.

Puts them all in their early-mid thirties...since the episode centered around Rachel's party and flashed back to everyone else's--which had happened offscreen.

As for how old the actors are, well, they are 32-32-35-36-37-39, so, yeah, they are older but not egregiously so.

If you used to like Friends, do yourself a favor and setup a Season Pass for Coupling on BBC America. I think it is the reason I now find Friends so stale.

Thanks for the reminder--I've been meaning to do this. :)

Yes, yes!! And if you really want to jump in with both feet, there's a marathon with all of Season I and Season II airing on Christmas Day!

I'm guessing the Coupling pilot wasn't as good as NBC hoped? They were (are?) counting on it as the Friends replacement.

I watch it to see if Matthew Perry is on drugs or off drugs. You can usually tell if he weighs in at 160 or 240.

But that's a Moo point. You know, a cow's point of view.

Uh, just to make it clear, NBC version of Friends is NOT the same as the UK version.

If they simply imported the UK version, they'd have a great product, but that's not how things typically work on US television networks - they simply 'copy' (obtain the rights) other programming that was created elsewhere.

If NBC is having any problems with their own version of Coupling, it's because they're (NBC programmers/execs) just as dumb as the idiots at Fox that are cancelling Firefly.

Though I suppose the folks that NBC is employing to develop their own version of Coupling could be less than competent and may be incapable of bringing the goods over.

Funny!

I bet they showcase Matt Leblanc's character in a few episodes to see if a spin-off with Joey would fly.

Posted by: Rcrew

I was hopeful this season would wrap it all up... guess we'll have to wait another year... but I'll be watching, if nothing else I can record all the new episodes and have a marathon sesson one day to bring the closure I'll need for those characters...

I like the show but the plot lines this season have been HORRIBLE so far... Monica and Chandler are a boring married couple.... what's funny about that? I have that!!

Maybe Phoebe and Joey will finally get together and they change the name of the show to "who's sleeping with who"

Posted by: Dancar

The show jumped the shark once Monica and Chandler started talking marraige.

The problem with shows that run too many seasons is that people and things just don't stay the same. People who run in cliques in their 20's naturally evolve and their lives drift in different directions.

ER has addressed this by slowly rotating cast members in and out, but this is a risky strategy because viewers may not like new characters as well as the daparting characters. Friends has refused to take this risk, and instead has to come up with contrived storylines to keep the Freinds spending so much time together as they get older.

I used to watch Friends and whatever crap they put on at 8:30 every week during Seinfeld's run, but when Seinfeld ended so did Friends for me. My "must see Thursday" started at 10PM after that.

Unless I've missed something, NBC hasn't yet made their version of Coupling, so we don't know if it will be a success or not. But, I have heard that NBC is pinning their hopes on it to replace Friends.

I believe the pilot was shot in late October.

Hmmm...yep, that's only [counts] 3 [/counts] episodes from the middle :D

Posted by: Rob Helmerichs

Unless he meant the middle third. :D

I must agree with everyone about not being excited for the new season of friends. I have been a fan since the beginning but this past season has been quite boring.........except i found the "I like big butts" episode great!!

Last night I watched my first episode of Coupling and enjoyed it very much and am looking forward to catching up with them. I'm glad I found a show to fill in the void.

I find that i watch the show still b/c I don't want to miss the end of my all time favorite show even though it is not as good. I wish that this season would have just ended it. There is nothing left for them to do.

NBC better come up with a good replacement show.....and quickly...

They shot a pilot for an American version of Coupling. My prediction? It will be horrible.

Posted by: TonyD79

But what the crap is an American version of Coupling when Coupling is the British version of Friends????

From what I heard, the same producers of the BBC version were involved in the NBC pilot. Eh, we'll see. any word on an air date?

No, it got pushed back. It was being groomed as a Friends replacement. Now that Friends is hanging around for another year... who knows?
As for the BBC people being involved with the American version, all I can say is: Junkyard Wars. Awesome British, unwatchable American.
