Coupling Marathon on Christmas Day
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)
Posted by: SquirrelyM
I started watching this fantastic show thanks to a recommendation in this forum, and now I'm returning the favor for those who aren't familiar with it.
BBCA is showing Seasons 1 & 2 on Christmas Day starting at 4pm ET.

What is it? Never heard of it.

Brittish adult humor version of "Friends"...
That aside, it is a very humorous show if you are into that sort of thing.

The episode where Steve has to explain the plot of a lesbian spank porno is one of the funniest things I've ever seen.
Coupling is great, I hope more people discover this series, it's a gem.

I might try to record these for my in-laws, who liked the few episodes I recorded for them a few months ago...
Only 1 problem: each episode is 40 minutes long, so I'll have to do a few manual recordings so that I can save a bunch at a time to tape...

The good news is that's the plot of the American pilot of Coupling. Unedited for content too!

I wouldn't say that is overall my favorite episode, it's really just the scene where he has to explain why it's an art film and not a porno.
I'm looking forward to the American version, although there are a lot of "Jeffisms" that won't make it past American censors.

Thanks, I really like this show so far and I hadn't heard of it before.

Me too. We've watched like the first 5 episodes so far.
One question though. The actress who plays Susan, Sarah Alexander. Where the heck have I seen her before? I looked at her IMDB entry and there's nothing there I've seen. She must look like someone else, but neither I nor my wife can figure out who. It's driving us both crazy. (but not crazy enough that we won't keep watching)
I think she looks like Genesis from Real World Boston, but my wife doesn't even know who that is, and she still thinks Sarah Alexander looks very familiar.
Another question - is this all of the episodes? They're running 6 episodes of Season 1 and 9 of Season 2. That's all there is so far? They've been running ads for a new season starting January 19.

Yep. 15 episodes in the first two series. Seven in the third, which premiered on BBC2 in the fall and starts on BBCA January 19. A fourth for 2003 is almost a certainty.
Given the involvement of the whole original production team, the difference between British "series" and American network "seasons" is the biggest hurdle I see for keeping the quality of the American "Coupling." I almost wish HBO had made an offer to them instead to be a sucessor to "Sex and the City" in a year or two.

"The End of the Line" was one of my favorite episiodes. I was in tears by the end of the show I was laughing so hard!

I second that! I have that one saved on my Tivo so that I can watch it again, and so that DH can watch it as well. It is absolutely hilarious!

For the Jersey Folks out there, the show will be airing within the next 2 weeks on WNJN. TV guide says the episodes are only 30 mins. Is this an edited version or commercial free?

Cool! I'll bet it's simply the original. On BBC, the show ran 30 minutes. It's 40 on BBCA because of the addition of commercials.
Lucky New Jersey! :)

For Philly people out there, Coupling is on WHYY at 11:30 pm Sunday nights.

The DVDs are very near. Series one will ship in January, with Series two available in late Feb/early March.

Depends how much British TV you watch. She's a regular on "Smack the Pony" and "Armstrong & Miller". Although if you're a Red Dwarf fan, then you probably saw her guest spot on the season 7 episode "Stoke Me A Clipper". She played the queen with the French accent.

I think she looks like the lead singer from Jolie and the Wanted. I had the pleasure of meeting Jolie back in 2000 in Louisville, KY at a concert at Waterfront Park.

I'm almost done downloading to VHS for my friends who don't get BBC America. Trying to get some Friends converts.
I love the episode with the Israeli woman! :D

I think this is one of the funniest shows I've ever seen. I am a sucker for women with british accents so that doesn't hurt it. I like the one about Patrick's video collection. I wish there were more (episodes).

We are about 7 episodes in and we love it! John said that he thinks it's *way funnier than Friends*, and I have to agree, at least Friends of the last few seasons.
Thanks for the recommendation. :D

hi!
i'm glad to see this thread!
i've been watching coupling for the last couple months and just everything about it.
quick story:
a friend of mine was in town for the holidays and came over late one night, we ended up watching 8 or 9 episodes of the marathon that tivo had caught, he's now a convert....and he's not that big of a television watcher to begin with.
i can't really say that i have a favorite episode, i like them all, from the crazy jeff'isms to steve's lesbian fascination to patricks large unit...;)
couple on!

Did anyone else read the title of this thread and misconstrue it? I know my mind is entrenched in the gutter, but I really thought that someone was having sex all day during Xmas. :)

Are there any other shows currently on BBC America that are worth watching that are similar? Or is there somewhere to read about the different series that are currently running?

After finding a couple of great shows on BBCA, I started spending a LOT of time browsing http://www.bbcamerica.com. There's a page for each show, plus good scheduling information.

Manchild is ok. It's kind of a male-Sex in the City.
So Graham Norton is one of the funniest shows on BBC America also. You've GOT to check this one out!!

British series are typically 6 episodes, to date Coupling has had 3 series so far. Series 1 was 6 eps, 2 was 9 eps, and 3 was 7 eps. BBC-America will start showing the third series this month.

I have to admit to liking "Keeping Up Appearences" and "Father Ted". If they start showing "Red Dwarf" again, that would be great too.

Agreed, Father Ted is funny.
Nothing beats Red Dwarf!

So I watched the episode called "Flushed" which aired on WNJN without commercials and it was hysterical! The show reminds me of Friends mixed with Sex and the City. I can't wait for more episodes!
ETA: I just looked at the episode guide and it was the premiere.

I just noticed that KCTS 9 (Seattle's PBS station) is running Series 1 on Sunday nights, too. Ep 1 ran Sunday night without my noticing it (although I've seen it on BBCA); Ep 2 is this weekend, with the rest of Series 1 (at least) to follow on subsequent Sundays.
