I am the very happy user of a series 1 Sony stand alone Tivo. I really like the remote on that model. I am looking to get a series 2 and I think I want to get the Phillips because it is less money. THE ONLY PROBLEM IS THAT I AM NOT SURE ABOUT THE REMOTE. It looks a bit clunky to me. Can anyone who has both a series 1 Sony and a series 2 Phillips care to comment? Those with series 2 Sony’s are also encouraged to jump in with comments.

Philips does not make Series 2 TiVos. The TiVo branded Series 2 has a peanut style remote much like the Series 1 Philips TiVos, but with a few extra buttons. I have no problems with it and like it much better than the Series 1 peanut. At this point, I have no real preference between the Sony and peanut remotes. The Sony Series 2 ships with a remote identical to the Series 1, but as you pointed out, it's more expensive.

im anal about everything and bought the sony one based on the remote mostly. but i have almost all sony equipment, so having the remote work with my tv out of the box was nice and the tivo 2 matches all my silver sony products nicely too.
