Good deals on 120GB 5400 Maxtor Drives?

I've been shopping around for a 120GB 5400 Maxtor Drive and all I seem to find lately is 7200 RPM drives. From what I have read, 5400 RPM drives run cooler and create less noise. Can anyone share positive experiences using 7200 RPM drives in a SA Series 1 Tivo? Does anyone know where to find 120GB 5400 drives for a reasonable price? I can buy online or at B&M retailer in the chicagoland area. I don't want to go beyond 137GB in the tivo yet until the bugs are worked out. Thank You

7200 RPM drives ARE louder. Forget the Maxtor and just go with the Samsung 120GB 5400RPM unit. It's not hard to find, and usually about $125-$130 delivered.

I've had WD, Maxtor, and IBM drives in 6 TiVos at various times, and NONE of them are as quiet as these Samsungs. They're really all you've ever heard about them and more.

Hardware Analysis had an article which compared various hard drives for noise and heat. Some 7200 rpm drives (such as some Seagate models) are quieter than some 5400 rpm drives.

But different models even from the same manufacturer can vary widely.

I have a Maxtor 120GB 7200rpm drive in my HDVR2. I set the quiet flag on it so it is much quieter than the stock drive and hasn't skipped a beat since I installed it two weeks ago.

I was more expensive in that I paid $180 for it but I wanted it NOW at the time and that was the best price I could find locally. Oh well.

I see your point re:7200RPM noise. According to Tomshardware.com, the Samsung 120GB (#1204) is about 5% quieter than the Barracuda IV, the second quietest drive they tested.

If you just plan on using a single drive, it wouldn't be as bad, but if you plan on dropping in two drives, it's probably safer to go with 5400 RPM drives. That's what I did and I haven't had any heat / noise problems since.

I second this notion. I recently put a 120GB Samsung drive in my SA Sony Tivo, and replaced an 80GB Maxtor with a 120GB Samsung drive in my XBOX. Both machines run *very* quiet, with the XBOX running noticably more quiet with the Samsung drive over the maxtor.
