Well.. I'm a newbie to Tivo.. just got one for Christmas. I've been researching them vs Replay for the last year or so, and finally ended up with one.
Got the 80 hour series 2 (and yes, I intend on upgrading the space soon).. but my biggest problem was the phone line. I bought the recommended phone extension device from Radio Shack and it worked for the first call, but took tooooo long. I suspect that it generates a lot of line noise, using the electrical lines and all.. so I axed it. Now.. I had to run a wire.. and damnit.. if I'm going to run a wire, I'm gonna run Cat5.. I figured that the worst case was I'd throw an RJ11 on the end and connect that way, but after checking here, I found that you could get updates over the net.. which I was hoping for.
So.. after reading that last night, I went and bought a Linksys 100M USB adapter (now I wish I had bought the Belkin... the 100M is pretty flimsy.. though, it looks like a decent solution on the package!.. I recommend that noone gets this thing.. it works, yes, but it's flimsy.. the Belkin looks to be build MUCH better with a regular RJ45 port instead of this half-assed thing Linksys calls a port.
Anyway.. after coming home with the adapter, I climbed into the attic and ran my cable. Was fairly easy as I had run a lot of cable in the house already, and all of the holes were already drilled in the right places.. so it was really a piece of cake. Hooked it all up, and the thing started to fail on negotiating. I checked my router and, sure enough, it was obtaining an IP address, so I knew it was communicating to the router.. and I knew my router was working as I have an extensive home network. After several reboots and wiggles, it finally worked and seems to be reliable right now. Woohoo! Updates over the net... so.. thank you guys for this.. And I hooked up the net at the right time because it decided to do a software update last night, too.. and it did it quite fast. :)
One thing I noticed that was odd, but I'm not overly concerned with, is that I only get a 10M link. The Tivo didn't work with the 100M plugged directly into the 10/100 router, and the M100 is supposed to be 10/100 auto negotiating as well.. but I moved it to my hub, inside the router, and viola.. worked fine (the hub is only 10M).. not sure why I'm not getting the 100 connection, but honestly, I don't really care much. :) It's still *MUCH* faster than the phone line. :)
Now I have to do all the other updates... and send more thank you's to you guys when I'm done. I only wish I had done the hard drive update BEFORE I started playing with it... now I'm gonna need a million CD's to do the backup... *sigh*
Yes.. I'm hooked. Tivo is the best thing to happen to my tv since dvd..

you don't need a thousand CD's.
MFSTOOLS2 will do the backup even if you have played with the hard drive. it can only back up the sytem and not your shows.
the backup will definatly fit on one CD.
